@@exquisitelemonade3039 the new generation era was extremely underrated some of the greatest matches in pro wrestling history happened during this era not counting all the hall of famers from this era
The buildup to the Taker/Diesel match at Wrestlemania XII was so awesome. Each of them interfering with the other's matches, Taker pulling Diesel down under the ring and leaving that casket by the ring with "Diesel" in the casket. I was a huge Taker fan at the time, I thoroughly enjoyed this storyline their match at Wrestlemania XII was the match that excited me most on the card.
I loved the part where they have a sword fight on the moon. The one where Diesel pulls down his pants and gapes his asshole open to intimidate the Undertaker. Awesome match.
@Dan Ross that was wicked. And out comes what looks like an egg but as he purged it out it was a floppy 18 inch white ( with brown and red) floppy dildo.
I was a kid during the new generation, and a teenager during the attitude era. I’m glad I experienced it all that way. 97 is my favorite year of pro wrestling.
i have always felt like I was in the minority when I talk about the New Generation, because I really feel like it was an interesting time simply because Hogan was finally gone, and it was not only interesting, but exciting to see what direction the then WWF was heading.
I always felt the New Generation era was very cartoony compared to the over the top nature of the attitude era that came after but this era still had some great stuff that made it very special, you had the iconic brother Vs brother feud with Bret Hart and Owen Hart, the first ever Wrestlemania ladder match with HBK and Razor Ramon and the two casket matches with Undertaker and Yokozuna, wrestling was so much fun to watch during this time because it really captured your imagination. Loved this era and lots of good memories for me watching this on Sky Sports.
And let’s not forget that nice little transitional period between the New Generation and Attitude era (mid 96-late 97). That was a underrated little period in time.
Oh yes, that was an awesome little period with Bret Hart snapping, the rise of Stone Cold, the formation of DX and the debuts of The Rock and Kane. Lots of great memories from that time growing up as a wrestling fan
@@Tad1945 1995 was the worst year ever for the company but compared to the current state of wrestling, it makes that year almost look like the attitude era
Although I started watching wrestling towards the end of Golden Age, the New Generation is when I really became a wrestling fan and will always have a soft spot for it.
The doink/Janetty and razor/Martell matches are definitely hidden gems, appreciate you bringing them both up! If anyone has doubts about checking them out, not that my word means anything, but I 2nd the fact that you should check them out
Before I get too far into the video, I just want to say that his era of wrestling is my most beloved. I had seen some of the great late 80s wrestling with my pops but I wasn't super into it. I was only 4 or 5. By the time this generation hit, I ate it up. Mantuar, T.L. Hopper, The Goon, Doink, Bastion Booger, Duke Droese. Those off-beat fellas were my absolute favorites. This was such a unique era in WWF history. The great occupational gimmick era. Love it lol. Thanks for covering this era. You always surprise and impress. 👍
So Mantaur, the Goon and TL Hopper were your favorites? Honestly, how many matches of them did you see? (Booger was, strictly speaking, not part of the New Generation.)
I am so glad, Doink vs. Marty Jannetty got praises sung on a wrestling channel! That match is underrated and I was blown away when I was doing a watch of RAW's first year a while back. Truly underrated TV match between two names you would normally find odd as a pairing with hindsight and the crowd was actually white hot during it!
Vince don’t appreciate great workers just dollar signs but that was a great match I remember it as well as a wow didn’t expect that but they def delivered a good one
What helped the attitude era out a lot was the fact that you had a surplus of rising young stars with a lot of talent and they were still fine tuning there talent during "the New Generation" all these young talents would hit there prime at one time. And lucky for us that just happened to be the late 90's So you wouldn't have The Attitude era without The New Generation era. They go hand in hand. That's why I loved all of it.
For real, you had the 1-2-3 Kid, Thurman Sparky Plug, Isaac Yankem, "Make a Difference" Fatu, The Roadie, Cowboy Billy Gunn, Kama the Supreme Fighting Machine, Hunter Hearst Helmsley, The Ring Master, Rocky Miavia, ect...as well as jobbers like the Hardy Boys and Scott Taylor...who all went on to be extremely over in the AE
New Gen was almost certainly the peak of neon spandex, mullets, and colorful 3D graphics, for better or worse (The Blue and Gold block WWF logo used before changing to the "scratch" logo is probably my favorite). It doesn't stand by itself very well, but in context of building up to one of the hottest periods in WWF history, the New Generation is a significant part of the story. Plus, we got to see Purple Undertaker, one of the best incarnations of his character. Great episode, very well told story, thank you Wrestling Bios!
Doink has got to be top 5 underrated and misused opportunity's in WWE history. Watched some of his early stuff not so long ago when he was a heel and honestly it was as good as to any of today's top heel stuff , his early days I recommend watching too , great wrestler.
Totally agree. Doink is seen as the poster child for the “silly” New Gen, but I will always maintain there is nothing inherently wrong with the gimmick, and in fact, as you guys say, it was dead cool at its inception. He was truly mean and threatening. Turning him face and giving him Dink is definitely most of what ruined him, and taking Matt Bourne out of the role didn’t help. He’s a very underrated worker and gave the Doink character all of its depth.
His ECW promos were brilliant too... Would of been a great story line in WWE going from his early heel clown gimmick to his even darker broken down persona he had in ECW..
💯 went down that rabbit hole myself, he’s my favourite wrestler ever, the way he’d look down the camera in ring mid fight, all his out ring promos where amazing as well. Amazing character 👌
Heel Doink was absolutely fantastic with the character and Sinister feeling you get from him like clowns are scary for me and i just felt intrigued and creeped out by heel Doink
Heel Doink was so awesome. In his first appearance on Raw he came down a holding balloon animal and give it to a kid...only to immediately pop it. That is amazing heel work.
Did he ever wrestle? lol. I feel like he was a big deal at the time, but I was also a little kid then so I think I thought a lot of things were bigger and better at the time lol.
I love seeing Waltman getting the credit he deserves, he's turned out to be one of my favorites but I didn't recognize it at the time. He's also a really cool, honest person.
I have a feeling this channel is a *little* more focused on the pre-2000's. And we are already getting an Attitude Era version of this called "Reliving the War".
Practically everyone but 2 of my friends totally dropped Pro Wrestling once Hogan left... I kept rolling on. (It felt a bit like a "Smaller pond" in a way, but I was still 100% invested)
I was always bummed that I only started watching wrestling towards the tail end of the New Generation era right after Razor and Diesel left for WCW. I was still happy that I got a chance to see Shawn and Bret wrestle along with the rise of Stone Cold and The Rock!
I’ll say the New Generation Era began at SummerSlam 1992. The first PPV not featuring Hogan, the the main event for the IC title Instead of the WWF title. Kind of like 1996 being the precursor to the Attitude Era: Diesel as a tweener ( the first wrestler on tv to imply that Vince is the owner of the company), the stuff with Austin in mid 96 to the end of 1997, DX etc. Although, it was not given a name officially until 1994, the new generation era began at SummerSlam 1992. Some will argue that it began at Survivor Series 1992, WrestleMania IX, or King Of The Ring 1993; and I’m fine with that. The Golden Era - to me - officially ended after WrestleMania 8.
SummerSlam 92 still had Savage, Warrior, and Flair in the title picture so I can't start that early. They were also billed as the main event of Survivor Series even though Bret/Michaels closed the show. Then Hogan came back and won the title, so I always look at KotR 93 as the end of the Hasbro Era and the New Gen begining
I was 14 in 1995. Never missed an episode of Raw, watched most of the big 4 WWF PPV's. I can't believe Luger worked 3 Wrestlemanias. His time in the Fed seemed so brief and forgettable when I was a kid.
Being a Rockers fan and Shawn being my favourite I was all in for the New Gen, and I was alone amongst my peers until Stone Cold. (I was fully behind Shawn at WM 14, again, alone). Thankyou again sir. Please keep up the great work.
Taker, Shawn, Hart and Razor man my childhood right there. Without question the biggest stars during the new generation. I'll give some love to Diesel too he had some good matches. My favorite match with him was Diesel vs Taker at WrestleMania 12
My childhood too. I remember hearing about Hogan, Sheik, Andre, etc. But I didn't actually start watching wrestling until this era. But since I really only watched Saturday Morning Superstars, 123 Kid, Doink and Crush were the guys I remember seeing in action most often. The Shawn v Razor ladder match and Hart v Shawn ironman match were my favs.
I'm a Bret Hart fan largely because he was the only thing keeping me from completely checking out on wrestling in the New Generation era. But I have to admit Shawn Michaels' first run as WWF champ stands the test of time. Especially his match with Foley. But by then, the NWO was THE thing in pro wrestling. So I can't blame anyone for overlooking it.
I want to go back in time to the early to mid 90s and ask Vince “Why can’t we just have some big, mean, and scary dudes without a stupid gimmick?” I think Psycho Sid was the best idea for a heel.
@Football Junkie It's funny how you say you'd ask Vince "Why can't we have big, mean and scary dudes without a stupid gimmick" then go on the say Psycho Sid was the best idea for a heel. Psycho Sid had a standard psychotic attitude/gimmick hence "Psycho Sid". It was a play on his "Sid Justice" gimmick because he turned his back on Hogan and thus was born a "Psycho".
New generation is when I really started to get into the WWF. Watched some in the mid-late 80's, but mostly watched NWA stuff... until I started hearing about the "New Generation". Then I got a subscription to WWF magazine, started watching WWF, and the rest is, as they say... history. A seriously underrated era of the "World Wrestling Federation". Edit: I agree, 1000%. New Generation truly started when Hulkamania left the WWF.
My childhood wrestling exposure was the early 90s stuff on video, even though it should have been late 90s stuff had I watched the TV at the time. Big shout out to my mum for introducing me to great wrestling! Bret Hitman Hart is our favourite to this day. We have Slam Jam on CD!
One positive from these "lighter years"... They came to my province (New Brunswick, Canada) WAY more often from 1993 to 1995! Focusing more on smaller markets/smaller arenas. Worked for me! lol
Same over here in my hometown in the province of Québec! I got to see Razor Ramon, Lafitte, Doink, The Smoking Gunns and a few others at a house show. It was great. I got to see them all coming out of the same bus which pretty much was the end of kayfabe for me. When I think about this particular era I mostly think about Doink.
Who’s your favorite Canadian wrestler? Bret hart the whiney baby. Owen hart for getting killed in the ring Or Benoit for killing his young son and wife. Who’s your favorite. I liked Owen. Because the crowd just would chant nugget and throw batteries at him. Pay no attention to anything he does in ring or promos just chanting nugget Even when he died which just showed what the fans thought of him.
The tag match made more sense than ya gave it credit for, Jannetty and the kid were tag champs at one point and Duke the dumpster drosse was actually alright, I thought he struck a good balance and could actually wrestle.
Hello Wrestling Bios, if you decide to expand on this and do another ten superstars of the New Generation I would recommend: the British Bulldog, Bam Bam Bigelow, Tatanka, Mabel, Crush, Alundra Blayze, Adam Bomb, Jeff Jarrett, Marty Jannetty and Irwin R. Schyster
It was admittedly a very downtime for wrestling. With 1995 having some of the worst PPV buy rates ever. However I think that’s more to do with the over kiddy friendly program they were running with at the time. The New Generation is an awesome era, with many amazing shows and stellar matches. Mostly involving HBK and Bret Hart. Sure they had many gimmicks and wrestlers come and go during this period, however a few legends did get noticed during this time too. It was the era I started watching properly, therefore I may hold this era in higher regard than some. However some of The New Generation era has aged better than the attitude era.
Awesome video! It seems that this format would work great for analyzing wrestlers and matches from other eras too. I appreciate the New Generation, because personally that is when I became a fan. I have a question about Mabel -- did he ever have any good matches?
The New Generation was the absolute frickin' best...🤘🏼❤💯✔️ That's where I got introduced to wrestling and all the amazing stuff that was happening in the WWF...👍🏼
With the Shawn Michaels thing I can understand what Vince was thinking with everything dropping somewhat after the steroids allegations and Hogan departure(and others) the WWF was in a bind. If I had the choice of either Vader or Shawn I would definitely picked Shawn. Apparently looking back on it now it was a good choice.
The In Your House match with Bret vs. Bulldog was an excellent match. I had only seen it once (when it originally aired) and I only recently saw it again. It is definitely a match worth seeing.
Going back to this era with folks who were into it already is what made me actually LIKE it. Bret & Owen being pure fire EVERY time either is in the ring but especially together, the Undertaker becoming a pillar, HBK being a great wrestler in the world's craziest outfits, Razor being a beast, the Kid being legitimately good even with his ultra-babyface persona... these were all things that hooked me. It wasn't all goofy gimmicks.
I became a fan during this era. I was 7 and looking back, while the characters are terrible now, back then, I was way more tolerant. They weren’t too different from what I would have just got done watching on Nickelodeon at the time so I tend to look back at this era with a certain fondness.
Yeah, I was 9 when I got into wrestling, and the bright colours and over-the-top characters really appealed to me at the time. That was 1992, though. What quickly happened was the gimmicks got sillier and sillier and soon enough I was 13 and stopped watching because I figured I’d outgrown wrestling. As much fondness as I have for the era, I have to also admit it eventually made me stop watching for a couple years.
@@taffysaur I hear you on that. I was in that sweet spot as I really started watching at the end of 94. I was only 10-11 by the time the attitude era kicked off so it was the perfect transition for me as the silliness and bright colors started fading out and being replaced with edgier themes as I made my way into my pre-teen/teen years.
Excellent absolutely loved this a nice heavy dose of nostalgia I know that people love to rag on the new generation era but I loved it I suppose I was the right age for it as I was just a little kid and I guess that it was just too goofy for the fans who cheered for hogan in the eighties as they would have been teenagers by the time the new generation started
I was lucky enough to b backstage at a house show in hartford around 94-95. Got to meet razor, irs, bam bam, and Owen. Then walking around later Bret pulled in (there was inside parking garage), I helped him unload his bags, got to hold his leather jacket. Bret was hands down my favorite, and he absolutely made me feel special talking with me for like 15mins. I'll never forget it
I ordered the PPV of the iron man match between Shawn and Brett, and I was incredibly impressed they had the stamina to wrestle that long and the creativity to keep it interesting the whole time. I also played all the video games during that time. My friend was obnoxious bragging about how good he was at mashing buttons in the Sega games. To be fair, he was good at it. He outperformed the turbo mode on my controller.
I like how you poke fun at yourself in these videos too, like talking about how you always talk about Bret Hart! And I really like this video btw, good idea with the best and worst match.
Finally someone who agrees that the new generation era begin at King of The Ring 93. Where Hulk Hogan falled and never was seen a again in WWE tv for many years. And the second rise of Bret Hart winning the tournament.
Even though i wasn't able to see this generation of wrestlers in their prime, thanks to your series Reliving The War i'm to see why they were pretty good. I would have definitely been a fan of Bret and Owen Hart 💯.
I would love to see the car crash characters of the new generation as that’s the thing I remember the most and I’m sure I’ve forgotten a few of them that was pre reliving the war
I like it when you can kind of slot in these different eras of WWE. The Rock n Wrestling era, The New Generation Era, the Attitude Era, and the Ruthless Aggression Era.
