It isn’t emphasized enough that the Supremes were the only musical group to rival the Beatles on the Billboard charts. No other American group amass as many hits as they did in the span of 6 years.

and doing that as black women in the 60s is absolutely insane, they literally paved the way for all black women in music

The Supremes also changed the sound of female groups of the early 60s. Instead of shrilly high octave sound the back up singer sang The Supremes sang Where did Our Love Go in a more harmonic sound which was ingenious. I always thought that Gordy seeing the forecast coming across the pond in way of Beatlemania held this song from being released in late 63 until July of 64 when Beatlemania had leveled off in America almost destroying American rock and Roll bands and groups except the Motown Sound

That hand clapping intro is magnificent. It's counting out the beat of the song - I tapped my foot to the whole song.

These are the stories I like to hear from Motown. The back story of the development of the songs, the recording process, and how the singers approached the song in question, that whole process is fascinating.

it's nice to hear how Motown worked from one of the men who actually helped create the music. Thanks, and rest in peace Lamont.

RIP to Wanda Young and Gladys Horton. Wanda stated that, that was a regret that they could not see that Where Did Our Love Go was a hit. But when you have a song like Too Many Fish In the Sea with that beat is it not hard to see why the Marvelettes turned it down. Also, the song that opened the door for Motown was Mr. Postman by the Marvelettes.

Technically, Holland-Dozier-Holland was responsible for only 10 of The Supremes' number one pop hits. Their last number one hit with The Supremes was The Happening in the spring of 1967, though The Supremes would have two more hits by HDH that same summer and fall in Reflections and In and Out of Love.

So all of a sudden the so called No Hits Supremes started mak8ng these hits after Diane deciding to poutly sing a song that supposed to be sang in a sultry manner or tone. I always thought that the song was a secret weapon to offshoot the British Invasion that came earlier in the year. I thought that Gordy saw what was coming across the pond and the hype that came with it and decided to withhold the release of some songs until the British mania sort of leveled off in America. You have to remember that two years earlier Diana sang Your Heart Belong To Me in a similar note, octave, or tone.

From what I heard Mary Wilson say in interviews when talking about "Where Did Our Love Go" they wanted something more soulful and mature. This sounded kiddish or babyish to her/them.

Just got to ask..if u thought the song was geared for Mary Wilson is there a domo of her sing "where did our love go" cuz as a young teenage i could hear Mary being lead on this song..but her background vocals with Flo matches voices made this song # 1. Yes Diane great.. but this song would have been crap with out Mary and Flo
