As I recall one of the earliest interventions was a lengthy 8hr surgery in China, it was not a cancer patient, was an amputee and a leg was saved by rotation
I met somebody who had this procedure done. He wore a prosthetic most of the time but one time he took it off in the middle of class and everybody was mind blown. He showed off his wiggly backwards toes and I think he enjoyed all the questions we had for him. 😂 Cool guy, he went through a lot of hardships in his life but had a really great personality.
This is really cool and I love the thought behind this procedure. As well as the effect it has on someone after it's done and they get their prosthetic leg.
Only possible if the bottom of the leg survives tho, I wonder if they'd ever sacrifice the foot on the other leg and turn it into a knee then just give you a prosthetic instead. Both your legs will be amputated but at least you got two working knee joints now and the ankles really aren't that important comparatively. If I ever lose one of my feet that's definitely what I want them to do, I'd rather have 2 working knees compared to one perfectly good foot and a peg leg with no knee joints.

They probably cut it on one side and then like a noodle pull it out delicately from the other. Then once the rest is out and ready to be replaced, they reattach the nerve endings and arteries / veins.
Ok, I'm glad you explained why they keep the rest of the foot, as I never knew it could function as a knee. I was always like "I mean at that point just remove the foot". But it's super cool how procedures like that, while weird initially, can be turned into something very helpful
All jokes aside the fact that this surgery is possible is a modern medical miracle. The amount of precision it takes to not only keep the vein and artery but also the NERVE intact. Not to mention the quality of life difference for patients who now have the option to have a functional knee joint, AND being able to put weight on an ankle inside that prosthetic instead of a stump. Decreased pain, increased mobility and independence. That's amazing.

Are you dumb or dumb. 1300s, not ancient. Plague docters, bubonic plague killed 1/3 of Europe. It was ment to deter it, the coat was waxed and herbs in the mask.
You missed the biggest benefit. We arent meant to walk on nubs and amputees go thru a lot of pain. But their feet can fully take the brunt of standing so its really nice

I'm guessing not severing a major nerve would also reduce phantom pain, which is caused by the brain being confused by the nerves suddenly stopping in a normal amputation. Phantom pain can be extremely debilitating so preventing it is a priority in amputation surgeries.
Rotationplasty is a surgical procedure used to treat bone tumors in children that occur near the knee. The bottom of the femur, the knee, and the upper tibia are surgically removed. The lower leg is then rotated 180 degrees (which is why it's called rotationplasty) and then attached to the femur
Saw a kid at a summer camp I was working at with a prosthetic like that. He took it off to go in the pool and he had a backwards foot. Thought he was born like that, thanks for clearing it up.

My brother is an orthopedic-pediatric surgeon and has done this on a couple kids already! It amazes me on the progress of these patients as their young brain readjusts to the heel as a knee now, and they can play all sorts of sports and still be little kids running and playing! My bro is amazing!
neuroplasticity is at its highest potential in your childhood so it does make sense that they were able to gain function in the joint the same as a regular knee
How does that work when they age? Like when they get taller does the rotated leg just grow with them? Also since the surgery gets rid of the original knee joint, do the bones get connected as well?
