After Disney announced that there are void of creativity and choosing to make endless sequel, it's needless to say that the trailer for Iwaju dropping was a serious surprise! A Nigerian-focused tale with a whole new cast and crew, and underdog studio, and a production that's heading straight to streaming on DisneyPlus sounds like the perfect, standard recipe for a great and unique tale, surprisingly platformed by Disney, but not on the full theatrical stage. Let's see all there is to learn about this upcoming series, and how this underdog project may be the diamond in the rough against Disney future plans of operation. What’s upsetting is the original concept of this series that was shown in 2020 looked amazing but then things went silent.Then they drop the new artstyle ( imo cheep artstyle) then going silent again, to drop A trailer this month to release at the end of this month. With all episode dropping at once. Yeah Disney has zero faith in this project.

I just had to look it up on Disney+ to find the trailer. They are certainly not putting it front and centre on the main homepage (at least not in Australia). It’s a shame, it looks fun, I will definitely give it a watch. P.S The little lizard looks like a copy and paste of Bruni from Frozen II. Very cute.

To me the lizard looks like the character from Newt, that Disney was working on years ago but was dropped. Same colour scheme and everything. Underdog projects are interesting, they often end up being fan favourites (maybe execs take more of a backseat? So the creators are able to take more risks and put more of themselves and passion into it?) The Lion King was the underdog during production!

"Originality in Disney" a phrase I never thought I'd hear again. This looks incredible, it doesn't feel Disney at all, and I love that. I hope this series is successful, encouraging them to try more creative, new projects like this.

Wish is an original IP, but hasn’t seen much critical/financial success partly because it’s a bit derivative. We’ve seen the quirky, adorkable princess main character before. Afro-futurism has been a growing sub-genre over the years, its often writers fantasising about what Africa could be like it it’s resources and people weren’t exploited so heavily. Black Panther has been the main other major studio film to tap into it in the last few years.

The animation looks like it's from one of those low-budget Dreamworks series you typically see on Netflix: Think; 'Dragons: Riders of Berk', 'Kung-Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness', or 'The Adventures of Puss in Boots', etc... I like the original concept though; This is the first Disney project I've had any interest in for a while now.

the question is will it be profitable. of the very little original material disney has actually been releasing, most of them have been nothing but box office bombs which i guarantee is 1 of the main reasons disney is pumping out sequels like crazy since those will make money most of the time

The only thing that makes me hesitant is the fact that it's a miniseries. I do wish that it would have been a movie, and that it would have had a theatrical release, because I would have definitely gone and watched that instead of waiting for it to come to Disney+. Otherwise, I'm really surprised!!! I think this looks really cool, and I love the artstyle and animation. It's just such a cool new thing that I want to see, and I can't wait until it comes out!

Hi @DazzReviews, I'm one of the filmmakers. Your video is the most excitement-filled video I've seen about our trailer since it dropped. Thank you! I'll be looking forward to your review. The show was first announced in December 2020 and then we were at Annecy in 2021 and D23 in 2022, so not totally left field. Your reaction does help me see how many people still have never heard about us, so hopefully, this will be a big surprise for most people. Cheers!

My two cents: Even if this doesn't look like your kind of thing, PLEASE at least try watching it so Disney can't look at the stats and think, "Huh, not many people watched this particular series. Guess we'll just keep pumping out the same old stuff that makes us money!" Also, talk about this project anywhere you can to make people aware of it, again, so that Disney can't say that no one was interested SOLELY because they never knew it existed. It's happened too many times already, and Disney is clearly trying to do it again with this series.

I think the sucess of films like Poor Things and Saltburn are proving that audiences want new concepts. Like I know poor things was based on a book but it was stylistically not something we've been seeing in theatres for the last few years. I also think people don't care about sequels and remakes anymore because we have so many. A sequel is good when the work warrants a sequel, if there is something unresolved in the story not just "the thing is popular so lets do it to death"

Not true, not sure where you got that info from. Disney did make it with Kugali Media. This is not just a distribution by Disney. It's a collaboration between Walt Disney Animation Studios and Kugali Media. If you look into how this project came to be, it was a collaborative effort from the beginning. Animation work on the film were done in Disney Animation's Vancouver studio as well as Cinesite in London.

I was so shocked when I looked at the comments under the trailer. I just couldn’t believe it…there was SO much negativity! And I couldn’t understand why!😭 I don’t know if I’ll *watch* it but I do know this looks absolutely incredible. This looks like unlike anything we’ve seen from Disney before, and that’s amazing. It’s an original story. It’s one not in the U.S! I have no idea why there is so much hate surrounding this already. I think this looks so neat. Not to mention, the lizard looks so adorable. He kinda looks like Bruni from frozen🥰

I admire your positivity but mass hate towards something like this is… not surprising. People just hate seeing artists write black characters. They cry wokeness when they raceswap characters and say to make original content, but cry wokeness even more when they *do* make original projects. It doesn’t matter if a black character is the lead or a background character, it’s all “diversity politics” to them because apparently black people just can’t exist in media without it being some hidden agenda. I’m not sure that I’ll watch this either but I hope that anyone who has problems with stuff like this can just acknowledge the fact that not everything is made for them.

I work at the VFX company for the show! Met the lead director and creator, Hamid a handful of times. He was a great guy with a lot of passion saying he went jobless just to focus on getting his comic picked up. I really hope it does well!

They could have decided to make it 2d like the rapunzel series but they put the effort into this and gave us the best quality they could for a series!! The most important thing is a good story, second is the animation, and fancy lighting/textures etc. are icing on the cake. Time will tell if it holds up in the writing department, but it certainly seems to have potential. Also, most sci-fi for adults is either Marvel movie stuff or dark literally and figuratively so something this colorful has a refreshing quality about it.

The plot of a pet living with a human family in a futuristic city reminds me of Bolt. Not to mention I am interested in the show that has the genre of cities in African countries depicted to be futuristic!

I swear I was thinking the same thing about the character design looking AI generated. I do appreciate that Disney is trying something new, but I'm praying that Disney at least ATTEMPTS a new visual style in this next decade.

Glancing at the thumbnail, I thought this was going to talk about the "Kizazi Moto Generation Fire: Enkai" Disney short film, and I was surprised as it isn't publicly out out, yet and is only images for those not in the UK University education system (will probs come out later this year). I watched it in a Screening of the BAA's audiance awards in uni the other day, and it was real nice! Had such a beautiful art style! ^o^ (yes in the uncanny side, but never the less, the rest of the character designs as a whole looked quite nice :) ) I'm looking forward to re-watching it and a few other of the good films I saw when they come out later this year. (for those that don't know, short film competitions are treated like a movie in the cinema, where you can only watch it at select screenings, and have to wait like 6 months or so to watch it online/buy it or somth 👍)

I am happy and mad. A movie about a different culture seems like a way less obvious way to celebrate Disney's 100th year. This looks like it will be really good. And celebrating new ideas is kinda what Disney has been about. In till they got money high.

Oh you should have opened with saying its a short series, I was about to say the art style looks absolutely terrible. For a movie it would, but for a children's cartoon its harmless. I still REALLY would prefer that 3D animators STOP with the giant eyes with realism eyelashes look, try a more unique stylization on the eyes for once, but its a cute new aesthetic combo, but i'm prob too old for it considering the age of the protagonist lol

This is the new megamind art style if you look at it closely. And to be honest coming from a Nigerian, Black Panther was all he representation I needed and it was amazing. They should focus on fixing up their stories and animation instead of trying to innovate new Diverse movies. At least fix the animation. Coco, Black Panther, Luca were and still are amazing movies and Disney has the ability to push great things like this. But just leave some originals for the younger generations. I grew up when Disney was in it's prime with Jessie, Liv and Maddie, Lab Rats, Let it Shine, just to name a few. It wouldn't be too bad to make an original Idea that doesn't aim to please an adult audience as well as kids. You can't keep doing remakes as well like Nick did with spongebob even though the creator SPECIFICLLAY SAID he was against spinoffs and "aging down" SpongeBob's character just for Nick to try and keep the fire burning while Spongebob has already lost it's charm nowadays. But my point is to stick to something original as your focus should be to grow the next generation, not bend over for the 10 losers online who hate that some character is offensive or some bs reason. I don't want to sound like a old grumpy guy tho.

After Disney constantly raceswap and genderswap characters, I hardly have any interest in black centered setting and female led stuffs anymore. Even new original ones. Because why would we need that when they can just change everything white to black and men to women? It's a shame because things like Kizazi Moto looks so good, and this has so much potential despite looking kinda generic.

it's surprising how inexpressive the main character is. They animated quirky, "adorkable", female character with exaggerated childish expressions for he last 15 years, and now that they have to animate an actual child, they forgot how to move lips and eyebrows?
