But who is Senhor de Matosinhos, after all?
According to tradition, the image of Senhor de Matosinhos is one of the oldest in all of Christianity. Legend has it that this image was carved by Nicodemus, who witnessed Jesus' final moments, making it a faithful copy of his face. The image is hollow because Nicodemus supposedly hid the instruments of the Passion within it, and during times of persecution, sacred objects were hidden or thrown into the sea to escape the bonfire.
Nicodemus threw the image into the Mediterranean Sea in Judea, and it was carried away by the waters. It eventually arrived at Matosinhos Beach, losing an arm during the journey. The population of Bouças erected a temple for it and designated the image as Nosso Senhor de Bouças, venerating it for 50 years due to its many miracles.
One day, a woman was collecting firewood on Matosinhos Beach when she found a piece of wood and added it to the rest. At home, she threw it into the fire several times, but it kept jumping out of the fireplace. Her daughter, who had been mute since birth, made desperate gestures to say something and finally stammered, to the astonishment of her mother, that the piece of wood was the arm of Nosso Senhor das Bouças.
Amazed by the miracle, the population discovered that the arm fit so perfectly with the image that it seemed like they had never been separated. In the 16th century, the image was moved to a church in Matosinhos, built in its honor, and became known as Nosso Senhor de Matosinhos.
