www.thelavinagency.com/speake...
We’ve been long warned that the world’s growing population will soon overwhelm the earth’s resources, but in this cutting-edge talk based on his book Empty Planet, John Ibbitson turns that premise on its head. Rather than growing exponentially, the global population is headed for a steep decline, he says. But this time, we’re thinning ourselves deliberately. In much of the developed and developing world, that decline is already underway, as urbanization, women’s empowerment, and waning religiosity lead to smaller families. Citing his sweeping global research, Ibbitson shows how this smaller global population will bring with it a number of benefits: fewer workers means that we’ll command higher wages; good jobs will prompt innovation; the environment will improve; the risk of famine will wane; and falling birthrates in the developing world will bring greater affluence and autonomy for women. But enormous disruption lies ahead, too. A universally significant topic, Ibbitson can speak to insurance companies or firms that employ actuaries to predict future trends, financial advisers who specialize in economic and geopolitical forecasting, businesses that want to predict the size and nature of their markets down the road, government departments charged with predicting population growth and aging, and other audiences looking to position themselves for the incredible changes to come.

The population of Europe declined by a third during the Black Death in 1350. The effect was to end the slavery of serfdom in many countries because the value of labour had increased. Land was plentiful and the lower classes could demand an increase in pay. Too many people means low wages and less automation and innovation.

Children aren’t simply expensive in America they’re unaffordably expensive. Single income households are virtually unheard of, and parenthood means the halving of family income at a moment when expenses increase exponentially. Understandably, most couples want a baby but the consequent two to five years of poverty associated with rearing just one small child is the biggest factor in the turn toward very small families. On an unrelated vein, I’ve listened to a few of these talks about the looming demographic catastrophe. The unmentioned subtext of these lectures is there are not enough babies being born to “the preferred races.” Our planet has more than enough people, by billions, and every one of them is more or less as smart and industrious as the next. If demographic trends are in the direction of a lower population then I say it’s about time.

You can have a child and still work. I have three, and always been a working mom (my kids are aged 4-14). What you do need is good quality child care and some means of paying for it. Here in The Netherlands, we get help from the government depending on your income (low incomes get more subsidies than higher incomes).

@pebblepod30

Agree with all, but there is no "preferred race thing", it is a culture thing. Look at any country in the world and people prefer and feel like home in their own culture & the FEEL it gives them of home and belonging and control of their country's destiny. Even in UAE, the masses of migrants are only temporary, not Citizens. So is it not actually true that "it is only a problem when white people do it"? I'm not judging anyone, or talking about my own personal preference (which differ from the norm). I'm simply making an observation that we in the West (my own media upbringing in Australia definitely included) are taught this double standard based on race. It's OK that white people often feel the same as everyone else on the planet (except being more racist toward themselves. Studies have actually shown this in the US).

It doesn’t have to be a continuous downward spiral. As soon as the (relatively) small number of future humans decides to start having more than 2.1 children per woman, the population can begin to grow again. It’s not terminal, it’s cyclical.
@paulpath4299

What makes you think they would start having more children? It's detrimental for career success. It's more mouths to feed, no immediate personal benefit, and it takes your time from being productive in your career. We make a lifestyle choice for the child primarily. We try to give our child a better life. Forgive me if my ignorance shows here but it seems that the European renaissance did not require a large population. It needed a society where individuals are allowed to thrive. Perhaps optimal population is what we should be looking for, though not at the expense of loss of our freedoms. The behaviour of the average parent gives us hope. Government's concern over a smaller population gives a lot of room for cynicism.

I don't see innovation suffering. I worked in tech startups in my career and it's really a very tiny percentage of people who push innovation. There's only so much room for innovation. If everyone was innovating it would be a huge problem. We need a lot more people actually building stuff, performing standardized tasks, than just dreaming up new stuff. As the population declines it won't have a huge impact on the actual numbers of innovative persons. And it will make it easier due to less competition for less innovative people to step in. There is a seriously poor understanding of what innovation is. We have the saying "Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration" that we don't hear much today, but is very true. Edison was not the only person who could have invented the lightbulb. He just beat everyone else to the finish line. Without Edison it would have given more time to other innovators.

What there will be is massively less demand. Innovation cannot solve a collapsing demand curve.
@michaelweaver2627
@michaelweaver2627 2 года назад
@@jasonpark4293 Did you read what he wrote? We have more potential innovators then the ability to properly use them. The most driven, talented and lucky inovators succeed today but others could take their place in a less competitive environment. Have you considered the pace of innovation would not need to be so rapid in a less crowded world? Nearly all.of our critical problems are related to the enormous unprecedented numbers of people on the earth straining it's resources to the point of collapse. With a far smaller population most of those problems are greatly reduced reducing the need for rapid innovation. I hold that rapid innovation while useful generally brings a lot of risk. If you don't think so look into what the atomic age was like and what we still have not dealt with from it. That's just the physical side of things, the societal adjustment to rapid levels of change is also risky.
@michaelweaver2627
@michaelweaver2627 2 года назад
@@jasonpark4293 It's not an invalid argument. Not every valid argument must scale in both directions to whatever arbitrary degree you specify. Many processes have an optimal point with dimmishing or negative returns on further input. It is irrefutable that the majority of our critical problems are tied to overpopulation and reducing the population to sustainable levels will reduce the need to innovate around these problems. The sustainable level is up to debate and what we want as a society but no amount of innovation can compensate for an ever increasing population tied to a finite resource world. Innovation also tends in most cases to lead to other problems. Build electric cars to solve ICE issues and now you have battery material mining and recycling issues. I have heard the more rats creates smarter rats argument before and while hyper competition may in fact drive quicker evolution it has serious downsides that don't justify it's emulation in human populations. Faster innovation created by more and more overcrowding and competition is a losing proposition that will inevitably lead to a world not worth living in or one where the eco system collapses under the strain. As the original poster said much of innovation is driven by effort not by pure genius. True innovators can be created and nutured if we decide to prioritize it. It isn't just a stastical probability in a given population.

We need people who want profit for sure, but that profit has to be made and moved in a certain way that takes OTHER factors into account as it happens, like the overall benefit of humanity. Of course it instil sucks in the places or "pockets" of the planet where life is still too shitty, but is getting there also. It may be so anecdotal that it's irrelevant or even misleading, but it was one of the most remarkable & surprising phenomenon I noticed amongst student populations, when I was one myself. It was as though there was always something that they were reluctant to discuss, something that, presumably, was more disappointing for females who were more genetically predisposed to living life to it's greatest potential. I may be clutching at straws but if the global population does decline in subsequent decades, then I would guess that whatever phenomenon caused that inverse proportionally will probably be one of the causes, whatever it was...

Yeah, almost 7.8 Billion in 2020 wasn't encouraging, but this new forecast definitely is. It was like watching a 40 year ongoing horror movie, "The Fatal, Unstoppable Population Growth". The end of the movie is a dystopian future where the human population is sitting at 20 million and the entire biosphere is rendered uninhabitable, and an extinction event begins. Economic utility (money) is generated by people wanting or needing goods and services. Less people means less money. You can play with this quite a bit by manipulating people's desires, but other things being equal, a rapidly dropping population means financial collapse. Resource exploitation grows geometrically. Populations grow exponentially. But human innovation grows with the cross-product (factorially). Each lost person not only lowers the innovation by their own loss of innovation but by the loss to others around them because they can't cross-pollinate ideas. To increase population growth, media portrayals of larger families need to stop being negative as they have been since the 1970s. Mothers who have large families need to be portrayed as heroes rather than selfish losers. Even that might not work, but it's a start. (Motherhood is resource intensive.)

@jwrosenbury
@jwrosenbury 8 месяцев назад
@@stevenicol1 Because India's people generate money for Sweden. It's about what people want and what they can pay for. People in India want to buy stuff from Sweden. People in Sweden don't want to buy from India. So, the Indian people's money moves to Sweden. Now you will bring up some other stuff. But much of your misunderstanding comes from the mistaken presumption that Sweden is richer than India. It isn't. India's GDP is about $3.3 trillion. Sweden's is about $0.6 trillion. Yes, Sweden's per capita is higher, but the total is lower. The per capita is higher because Sweden is a high-tech exporter. Also, subsistence farming is seriously undervalued because people don't want what subsistence farmers produce. Except the farmers and their local communities anyway. Since the transactions are in non-standard currencies (barter, community trust, etc.) they are hard to measure. Typically, they are counted as zero dollars. Population is not the only generator of wealth, but it's the base. Other abilities like producing cool stuff act as multipliers because people want the stuff and will pay extra for it. He talked about how developed countries consistently stabilize at about replacement rate (including immigration). Meanwhile developing and third world countries' mothers consistently have more kids but, regardless of other influences, consistently end up at only just above replacement rate when you factor in child mortality and emigration. When child mortality suddenly decreases (spread of medical knowledge or technology, usually) within a generation the number of children per mother decreases accordingly. Individual nations have been outliers at certain times based on certain combinations of government policies and unique cultural norms.

As for Lagos Nigeria being a source of immigrants - I lived there for two months and can honestly say that the rest of the world has a great deal to learn from that place. Nigerians represent a very broad spectrum of people - nothing at all like the rest of the World. Probably half the reason they produce so many children is that there are 330 ethnicities there so you can't be sure that your kind will be there in even a few decades if you don't create more of it. In the West, as a white person, I know there's still many women not very different to me genetically who are producing people similar to me, even if I'm not personally involved in that. That's due to the very low genetic diversity you find outside of Africa. Literally, anyone other than Indians or Australian Aboriginals or Spanish/Hispanics (parts of the world highly cut off geographically from the rest of it) would, if they produced children, be producing people of not dissimilar genes to myself, including Asians, Europeans and Middle Easterners.

Couples will have more children if they are stable in their lives sooner. Many people chose to do 4+ years post secondary. Then housing is so expensive they end up renting for 5 - 10 years and it is easy to fall into the rental trap. Just google the average age of a home buyer to see how horrendously late in life your nation is at getting started. Stability + Job + House = couples start thinking about kids. If that happens at 25, families will be larger. If that happens at 35, couples will be 0 - 2 kids. At 35 though, women are hitting the fertility wall and odds are 0 kids. Also, if nobody objects, I’d like to say a woman’s life has to be worth more than being an incubator. There was a woman in Sudan who was married off at age 12. She had 39 children, all multiple births. They didn’t all survive. Her husband left; she and the children were in extreme poverty. No assistance from government or whatever religion doubtless told her it was god’s will she have babies and don’t you dare use contraception. She didn’t take the escape route her husband did. Or there’s the story of my mother in law. She was the last born of a large family. Her mother died some months afterwards. Her mothers sister came to help, ended up marrying her brother in law and producing another large family.

From a biological standpoint thats literally the purpose of a female of any mammal species. Incubator. I know it hurts your feelings. But thats the way biology is.

People also had large families because there was no birth control and women did not have control over their lives. Thankfully we became aware humans and developed ways to ensure women rights. Unfortunately we are slipping backwards. Unfortunately men and some women want women to be used as breeders with no regard to choice. My grandmother had 9 children and said if she had access to birth control she would have stopped after one. People whose only concern is money and how to sustain not humanity but their monetary quality of life that is built upon breeding a working class are the lowest form of human ever conceived.

Nonsense reasoning. People had a lot of children because they had a lot of sex and no birth control. People don't have enough children because we have birth control and the amount of sex people are having is declining rapidly.
@worndown8280
@worndown8280 2 года назад
@@RadekPilich You are mistaken. Take Japan for instance. Their fertility rate crashed long before the introduction of the pill in the very late 90s. What did happen is women massively joined the work force first in Japan. We can look at the US as well. In 1800 the Average American woman had 7 or 8 kids. By 1900 that number had fallen to 3.5. No birth control involved. What you see in that time period is that there was increased urbanization, women had less children on the East Cast and then it spread west as the century progressed and women started getting married later. The later shortened the time period she could have children. With more women living in cities, this meant, even back then, they had to work outside the home. Both of those issues, women not getting married until 28 today and her working outside the home were the main causes of fertility decline. But now there is a greater one, as China has found out. Cultural patterns have changed, women literally dont want to have kids now. Cultural changes take a lot of time and energy to change. Takes a lot of time and energy to change them back.

Population decline is quite beneficial to the environment & the human race as a whole. The only people who'd be negatively affected are the rich. Lower profits for them, yet I'm sure poverty should decrease.

There is a huge advantage to an increasing population, besides the obvious like having enough younger workers to pay your Social Security checks. Increasing population puts more minds to work on solving problems. It literally leads to innovation, new products, better processes, more efficiency, etc. It provides the consumers to purchase your products and services, taxpayers to pay the costs of the government, a military capable of defending the nation's interests. A declining population brings the opposite.

Some of the most vicious & violent wars in European history occurred during the social upheaval that occurred during & after the Black Death plague. So much for peaceful coexistence! Selfish humans will always look for a scapegoat to blame for their problems, again look at the last 200 years history. Survival is programmed into our dna, as the old Wings song, “Live & let Die” so eloquently states.

Not sure I heard any benefits in this speech, let alone “surprising” ones. Many nihilists, and I’ve already seen many in the comments, will watch this and think “well good, humans are terrible anyway.” No one has ever accused nihilists of being deep thinkers, and I don’t think they consider just how interconnected we all are. Sure, we’ll be forced to innovate and automate, but there is a cost there too. One good measure of whether or not something is a good idea is to ask the question “what if EVERYONE was doing it?” Sure, a birth rate of below 2.1 can be managed in the developed world now because of the idea of immigration from other countries. But that barrel has a bottom, and we’ll get to the bottom far more quickly than we think. He mentions how Kenya’s birth rate has fallen rapidly. So has Nigeria’s, by over 1% per year for a while now. My young adult children will be in their early 50s when the idea of de-population becomes more center stage. Right now it’s just some idle ranting by contrarians and Elon Musk. The one constant in birth rates falling has been the education of women. And who among us will be courageous enough to say “stop doing that”? More likely, I see a rather dystopian future where women are required to give birth to a minimum of two children lest we die out.

Please stop saying, “…and that will never, ever stop.” The entire conversation around population decline seems to be predicated around the idea that it goes on until extinction, and that is ridiculous. There is no way at this time to project either the speed or duration of population decline and no more reason to think it will last forever than that population growth lasts forever. More likely, the population stabilizes at some point and oscillates a little around a sustainable number. And that is a very positive outcome. Might take centuries to get there, but we just don’t know.

There are modern countries with a much higher population density and yet are highly inventive, innovative, highly automated powered by high powered computers, etc and yet you insist on your flawed views? What you have missed is the lack of younger people to effect that cultural transferance from the older generation to the next younger generation to maintain the security of the future. Governmental mismanagement and incompetence are two of many factors that artificially creates poverty and not by too many people. Past civilizations can only provide painful proof for that. The Incan Empire also shows that property land management can produce a land of plenty regardless of how dense your population is and how many people are around you. IT IS MENTALITY and culture with a positive demographic growth to also effect that cultural transferance are also are the key factors to prosperity. The U.S Civil War occurred when the country is young and has a positive demographic growth and economic growth actually went to war to end slavery. Remember the Western Roman Empire and Eastern Roman Empires? Both are highly populous and prosperous empires and when plagues devastated their population all of that prosperity and security went downhill.

Immigration is the answer, which will be interesting given current Western immigration policies... International adoption also looks like a good idea (currently virtually impossible for the average childless couple, which is very sad). Plus older people will still need to be looked after. Personally think depopulation is a brilliant thing, best for environmental impact, sexual equality, quality of life, personal economics, physical and mental wellbeing, personal freedom, etc. Let's not forget that women work these days too, therefore increasing taxes by 50% compared with 100 years ago where most married women were *not allowed* to work. As he says, these things have a way of working themselves out...
