The surprising truth about solving climate change | Joseph Romm | TEDxAsburyPark

We have finally accepted the reality of climate change, now we must get real about the solution. The most surprising truth is that we know the solution to climate change and have known it for a long time. But we are being distracted by sexy strategies like hydrogen energy and carbon offsets that offer little hope of much help for decades. We are diverting billions of dollars from the real alternative energy solutions of wind, solar and electric battery technology. Dr. Joseph Romm has a Ph.D. in physics from MIT and is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania Center for Science, Sustainability, and the Media. In the 90s, Romm helped oversee the U.S. Department of Energy’s work on climate solutions, ultimately serving as Acting Assistant Secretary of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. In 2009, Time named him “Hero of the Environment″ and Rolling Stone included him in their list of 100 “People Who Are Changing America.” An author of ten books, CNN host Van Jones has called Romm “the communicator’s communicator.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. OK, but the Gulf of Mexico has experienced hurricanes not only for the last 100 years, but as far back as historical accounts go. So what caused hurricanes back in the 1500s? It certainly wasn't internal combustion engines. Today we notice these natural disasters because more people live along the Gulf Coast, and we have a hyperactive news media.

It's a very good idea to keep to currently existing technologies... The problem is that, keeping it real, rules out batteries... And without batteries there's no intermittent renewables, like wind or solar... So this nice gentleman has no solution, much less a simple one, to "solve" climate change...
@alyhdickinson

I think your focus on existing technologies like solar and wind is great, but dismissing potential future breakthroughs like hydrogen and nuclear might be short-sighted. Innovation can’t be ignored when it comes to this subject

The idea of using heat pumps in schools is really good but I doubt it's feasible for underfunded schools. They're already struggling so much for the things that ARE necessary let alone something extra like that
@Techodeflash
@Techodeflash 2 месяца назад
Yeah I don't mean to yuck his yum but I'm going to have to bring up the fact that causation doesn't equal correlation on this one. Like... kids at schools with better ventilation are probably performing better than those who don't because they would have access to all kinds of better resources, not just better heating systems.

The weakness of this presentation is perhaps indicative of the formidable challenges of reducing carbon emissions. Using his own words, he dawdled through the first third of his time before approaching the heart of the subject. Then he skimmed over renewables solutions as thought they could be quick and easy. He spent the rest of his time talking like a heat pump salesman. Heat pumps represent only a small fraction of the solution. Perhaps he meant for this to be a heat pump discussion and the title is misstated?
@JosephRomm007
@JosephRomm007 3 месяца назад
Renewables have proven to be far quicker and easier than the overwhelming majority of people thought. Heat pumps are actually a large part of the solution. And yes, reducing emissions is a challenge. That is one of the points of my presentation.
