I was homeless for a while(about 3 years). I graduated high school with honors and was making A's in college and was working full time while going to college. So what happened. A terrible chain of events. First my mother came down with cancer and could no longer work. We had no support from our family. So, I had to pay all the bills. Then, I got into a car accident, lost my job, and my car. Did all I could to apply for jobs afterward and used my mom's car(our last car). It died before I could find any work. Mom in and out of hospitals quite often, having to use all of our savings to keep her alive. Then bam. Evicted, in debt up to our eyeballs, no friends, no family, so on the street we lived. Only reason we are not homeless now is thanks to my mom getting disability that didn't go through until 3 years later.

The idea that people willingly become homeless is just insane and ignores all common sense. People who are about to lose their homes desperately try to keep it. We need shelter, it's a basic human need. It makes sense that most of those who are homeless cannot work for some reason.
@NekoYuki
@NekoYuki 10 лет назад
My mother's disabled and has been homeless at times, simply because of very bad situations. There's this stigma that people who are homeless are simply vagrants and criminals. I'm disabled myself, and if things went to shit, I to would have the potential danger of being homeless. My mother was recently in a bad situation with a landlord that ran a "ministry" that charged absurd amounts of rent for services that he failed to provide, and he was abusive to all the tenants. Then when busted, he blames the property owner and the tenants. And you know what? PEOPLE SIDED WITH HIM! They said "they obviously did something to become homeless. You should know you're dealing with those kinds of people." FYI, he claimed it to be a homeless shelter and got tax exemptions.

The lazyness thing is propaganda from people who have never actually talked to anyone living in these kinds of positions. Anyone who has had a chance to connect personally on a day to day basis would have a better understanding. Maybe rich people are projecting their fear of laziness onto other people? Ever consider that?

any study done in Toronto and homeless should note that in the early 90s, we as a province use to have province run metal health institutes, which were shutdown and all the people with metal illness suddenly became homeless. So any study on the homeless are inherently bias to metal illness.
@Linkous12
@Linkous12 10 лет назад
While this particular study is recent, the idea that mental health is a huge contributor to the homeless numbers in the United States (and worldwide) is not. The average American is very ignorant and naive about mental health issues. This not only helps maintain homelessness as a problem, but also issues like gun violence (high profile school/military base shootings) and suicide. People are afraid of what they don't understand, so mental illness is usually brushed under the rug, or is misdiagnosed; "He didn't shoot those people because of schizophrenia, he played too many violent video games!", etc.

A few years ago, I was homeless because I was laid off, couldn't find a job, couldn't collect unemployment (the offices were closed and the phone line and website were down) and had no friends or family would could help. The problem was resolved when my former employer rehired me at a 33% paycut. No head injuries here, and I know my story isn't unique, because I used to help run a homeless shelter.

I think it should be obvious that the vast majority of homeless people, who beg on the streets, must have some sort of mental disorder. People who attribute this begging to the homeless being lazy and not wanting to work need to rethink that idea. Standing outside, in the hot sun or cold winter, for 8 hours a day is far more difficult than working almost any job - no matter how menial - when that job is in an indoor air conditioned or heated environment. The only way that someone would choose the former over the latter is if they suffer from sort of mental problem that prevents them from holding down a job.
@darjluke

Two reasons why injuries may be causing homelessness: 1. You get expensive medical bills. 2. Injuries that send people to the ER tends to get them prescribed addicting prescription pain meds. When one is on pain meds, it takes lots of will power not to abuse the drug. Even with will power, if insurance stops paying for the pain meds, people will look for pain meds off the street. If you took too many pills and run out before the refill is due, it is probably because of tolerance. You will be cut off from the meds cold turkey since the Dr. won't prescribe more out of risk that you will abuse the drug. You need more to gradually reduce the dose to not risk dependence, but if the Dr. prescribes more, you probably won't gradually reduce the dose but rather increase it making the dependence worst. Catch 22? That is the reason why I would rather die then to live with pain. Even when people say "But pain can be controlled, there are great advances in pain medications" It's not that easy to control pain.

This is partially true, but living in Phoenix and spending a lot of time in direct contact, hanging out around and with homeless people has shown me that the majority are travelers, intentional homebums and simply lazy people who refuse to apply to jobs they don't want to work at. There are a lot of mentally traumatized people taking up the homeless population in Phoenix, but definitely not the majority.

I was homeless during a large part of my childhood. My idiot parents made horribly poor decisions leading to horrendous financial situations. I think it would be more effective if we help people before they get homeless instead of after. Some homeless people loose their jobs, get sick, get behind on bills, can't afford housing and then become homeless. Let's help them pay their bills or help them find a job before they even reach the point of homelessness.

I've been living in my car for over 5 years because the government garnishes too much of my income because of default student loans for me to be able to afford rent. Avoid student loans if you can. You're totally screwed if you can't pay them back. Most other types of loans can be delt with by declaring bankruptcy and often have statutes of limitations on how long you can be held accountable for them and can't be garnished from your income, but if you can't pay a student loan back, you're just screwed and the interest increases on them so even though they're garnishing your income, you probably just end up paying the interest without making a dent in the principal.

I nearly became homeless. I was renting an apartment and then the landlady had to fix the bathroom and I had about a week to move out (it would not have been at all possible to stay while the work happened). Where I live it is REALLY hard to find somewhere to live and I could not have afforded to stay in a hostel or anything like that (there is really no cheap 'holiday' accommodation). Even the student housing people had no places for me, and no one had a spare room. Luckily however the landlady and the people who did the bathroom fell out over who should pay for the repairs and decided they would have to go to court, this gave me a bit more time to find somewhere and while it meant washing in the bathroom in a bucket for a few weeks and using public toilets it could have been a lot worse. Sometimes homelessness can simply be the result of unfortunate circumstances.
@vonjd
@vonjd 10 лет назад
I haven't seen the original study but the problem with these kinds of studies is that they often fail to look at a control group. So if you identified a homeless person and asked him/her whether they had fallen on their head some time in their life many would agree - yet if you asked the same question a non-homeless person many would agree too! So it not only matters how you asked the question (falling on one's head is quite common as a child and in many sports) but also how you choose the groups.
@darkrufio
@darkrufio 10 лет назад
People take for granted how easily one can find himself homeless. For the most part, we all have a family that is there to support us in times of need. If it wasn't for my parents, i would have found myself in situations where i would of been homeless. Like when i finished college and got kick-out of my first rent, when i went backpacking in Europe and spent all my money and couldn't afford a ticket back home...If is wasn't for my family, i could of been homeless in these situations. So before you start judging people, just take a min a think of what your life would be if you had no one to help you.

This study is difficult to relate to the USA because more than 25% of the homeless in the united states are veterans. And obviously a major reason that veterans are homeless is due to traumatic brain injuries and mental illnesses like PTSD. Canada does not have the never ending war problem that the USA has.
@dragonsorcerer285
@dragonsorcerer285 10 лет назад
I find there to be a serious problem with your point in this video. You seem to be implying, from the title of the video, that the correlation found is the cause of homelessness. Science rule #1: Correlation does not equal causation. Pointing out the correlation and urging further studies would be warranted, as would posing possible reasons for the correlation. Suggesting that "this is the reason why people are homeless" is gross negligence in title writing. It would be better to say "The surprising link between homelessness and head trauma," or something to that effect. It still implies causation to a small degree, but nowhere near as badly as saying it's the "Way People Become Homeless."

He was stuck in USA without money to go back to his home. The people at ru-vid.com gave him a hotel room, new clothes, 1000$, a free trip to the barber shop, and a flight back to Russia. He cried while telling the people that he only wanted to see his son and daughter. I was fascinated that such things can happen in a single day. Maybe people with TMIs are more likely to become homeless because they don't have all this extra stuff in their brain clouding their judgement. They don't think it is worth it to work a 9 to 5 soul crushing job just so they can barely be able to pay their bills each month. I hit a bridge pillar at 70mph head on and got a TBI along with many other things and I'm nothing like I was before, I can't sleep good even though I'm tired all the time, I hate being around people, I can't focus on conversations because my mind's always thinking about crap, I have mood swings, and I'm kinda lazy and don't give a shit about alot and if I didn't have a family I honestly believe I would live in the woods because it's quit and I don't have to deal with people.

All these comments makes me think that the title for this video was abruptly changed... It would be nice if you youtube had an indicator for every time someone changes the title of their videos. A "video title history" in the "about" section would be quite the kicker.

By the way, a title that would provoke less harsh criticism for this video would be "'A' Surprising Way People 'May' Become Homeless."

Correlation does not mean causation. In this case, a causal diagram would have a mediator between brain injury and homelessness, and there would be many other factors involved. I can presume that people who have sustained head injuries are more prone to irrational life choices which contributed to them ending up homeless.

Something happened to me a while back and it changed me..long story short my step son was homeless. Dropout, lazy, knocked up his girl you name it and we didn't allow him into our home and he burned bridges in all family and friends. Fast forward he was on the streets and of course the Crystal Meth yeah!!! Fast forward again after jail he's in family jail helping him out. Overall, I've been asking homeless people why they are homeless before I give them a lunch and not cash. Some stories are sad with legit reasons and others are pretty much drug and crackheads stealing. I'm sick of homeless people...not the ones that have bud luck but I'm sick of the stupid lazy homeless folks that are healthy and have no reason not to work and pay taxes that we all pay for. Get off drugs and work like the rest of us Americans!!!!!

DNews is expected to do better. So what if half of homeless people had a disability related to head injuries. How many non homeless people have head injuries? Probably the same amount. And how many homeless people have socks? The study doesnt logically correlate with the conclusion. Fact is, Bush brought us to illegal wars raised the war budget to unimaginable levels and then Obama comes in, raises the war budget even unimaginably more and bombs 12 countries. As a result everything is more expensive and everyone's social safety nets have been gutted. The best we can do is to physically stop everyone we know from voting, especially if they watch corporate television and are going to go vote for a corporate campaign financed politician. You have to physically stop them on voting day, unless they are voting for a politician who hasn't taken any corporate contributions and is seen in the streets working for the interests of the homeless, which is a sign that they know of the best solutions because they work directly with the people who suffer the most. No one on Earth understands what is broken and how to fix what is broken than the people who suffer the most. What gets in the way of that is corporate media covering corporate approved politicians, who work for corporate interests not community interests, so the masses never get to hear about authentic politicians and only about the corporate approved politicians.

A correlation does not indicate causation. I'd want to see more research on more people. It could well be that a huge proportion of people with drinking and drug addiction issues have brain injuries and also become homeless - making this correlation likely non-causal.

200 MILLION dollars trying to fight homelessness? People in so called 3d world countries who have a house, a car, internet, cable and plenty of food only make about $10,000 per year. Basically you could send 20,000 people to try luck on another country for a year all expenses pay for and if they decide to go maybe they will find something for them, or comeback here all with in the 200 million budget... Or you could send 5,000 people to college right here in USA with that kind of budget. I think some people there must be just stealing the money or paying crazy salaries to old friends...

as long as there are people there will be endless problems. I can't say brain trauma doesn't lead some to become homeless but i will say that between medical care... err lack there of, and the piss poor laws to help people yes we do have a very real major homeless problem in a country that produces enough food to feed nearly half the world if not more by itself. yet people starve here due to lack of funds and the lack of good people in the world. If i get a bit off subject please forgive me but the fact that there are so many homeless in this country is cause for both concern over corruption and greed. people who go homeless due to drug abuse is absurd instead of prosecuting people help them with the right help you can reduce the number of drug addicts by more than half. with the right help you can reduce the number of drunks and drinking accidents. By doing this we remove a lot of the reasons people do go homeless. and then look at mental illness a vast majority of people who have mental illnesses HAVE to go untreated. the cost of therapy alone is over 125 dollars an hour this is rediculas to an extreme. not to mention dangerous. and for years we have had to fight hard to show mental illness even exists as the states and government have shut down mental hospitals all over the united states causing major problems. as an example look at California when they shut down one of there hospitals they released some very dangerous people crime went up drastically several people where killed and some burned alive by pyrobugs that where proven to be so unstable to release them would be a danger to themselves and the community. and that is just the tip of the iceberg . look at how the number of homeless went up in the time period after the closing of that hospital. so i think mental illness is a major factor I would imagine nearly half of the homeless suffer from some mental illness.

Is there an area of the brain that's dedicated to the drive to seek and maintain shelter? If it is an actual area that can be damaged or fail to develop, then I can definitely see how brain injury or genetic defect could be responsible. There seem to be a lot of people as well who have a home but its absolutely trashed all the time with rancid dishes laying around and trash on the floor, and I wonder if this is related?
