Wii Play (2006) had a great assortment of little games, each with a little gem of adaptive music, but none got as intricate as the final one, Tanks!, in which you battle with little toy tanks on a hardwood floor. Check out how much variety you can get out of a few measures of music and some clever game design parameters.
Special thanks to DavoGato and Wolfgang for helping me with this video!

The Google document linked in this comment goes over some inaccuracies with the chart I created in this video! Like ISaveNewspapers mentions in the document, I did research this video by ear, studying how the game's soundtrack changed as I played it over and over. I tried to corroborate my findings with other playthroughs listed online, but still this method wasn't immune to error, especially with so many possible permutations of enemy tank groups. So, thank you for writing this and correcting what I missed!

I probably made it into the 80's and 90's half a dozen times, but I only ever beat level 100 once. @scluke
@scluke Год назад
I love how each tanks effect on the music kind of corresponds with what they do. Example: the red tank fires a ricochet pattern, resulting in two lines of travel for the bullet, and adds two instruments. Yellow tank has mines and adds the bass drum, simulating the explosive sounds in the music
@isavenewspapers8890
@isavenewspapers8890 Год назад

one thing I found interesting is that the trumpet fanfare heard at the start of every level is actually in a different key then the rest of the music. It might not actually be that much work. That avatar could easily be a 2D rig; If that's the case, it could easily be animated with minimal work from the producers. In fact, a lot of 2D animation these days uses 2D rigs. They don't work for heavy action, or for super detailed animation, but they work very well as time-savers for casual animation where characters are mostly standing and talking.

@jayhips625 2 года назад
Well it’s not really complex, dynamic would be a better word as it changes through the game based on your actions which is what this video explains. You can make an essay on even the simplest music though it not really the goal to be complex either, it’s very fitting for what it was made for and that’s the thing to appreciate. The composer managed to not make it complicated as to not take away from the gameplay but to enhance it.

@@hilalstein4236 well you can right 4 pages on literally anything. To be fair he might not have known how it changes with the gameplay and thought of it simply as a game soundtrack. It was probably his goal to get people away from video games and into a frame of mind when he was younger learning about it but most people younger would not care about his experience just as he doesn’t understand theirs.
