'Sju' is my favorite number ever. We don't have that weird sound in Danish so it always amazes me when Swedes say that number. It's so hard for me to pronounce. Counting is very straight forward in Swedish though. Nowhere as complex and weird as Danish, haha!!

Yes, it's a bit like German without those delayed verbs, and a more laid back pronunciation. One reason behind this being the connection to the Hansa league's Plattdeutch (Low German) in the middle ages. As you probably know, Swedish did not undergo the consonant shifts High German went through. Swedish also use a pretty simple grammar, even compared to English (although some word order patterns can be hard to grasp).

I have a suggestion! When you were first going through the alphabet and the numbers, you put on the screen how you would write it out and that was very helpful! But! When you started getting to the “exceptions” the CCs don’t know how to translate what you are saying, so it is a little harder to follow you when you don’t have the words or numbers spelled out on the screen. And I know that’s a lot of extra work on your end but it would really help a visual person understand the differences in what you are vocally saying. If that makes sense? But otherwise I love this!!! I need a pen and paper to take notes on so I can practice! ☺️😄

When I count fast I say "fyr", "ått", "ni", "ti", "elv" instead of fyra, åtta, nio, tio, elva (four, eight, nine, ten, eleven). A lot of Swedes also say nie and tie instead of nio and tio (nine and ten). The reason why Swedes skip the last part of some words (this happens even more frequently in some northern accents) I believe is that we usually accentuate the first part of words when speaking. So when shortening words and names we often stick with the first part. We also like to two-syllable nicknames, even if you have a one-syllable name... Someone called Bo would be nicknamed Bosse, for example.

What you were saying about taking away the last letter when you say it fast... speech differs from the written version of words bc the written ones are how we’re supposed to pronounce them but in real life (speech) the pronunciation of the words change in order to make it more fluent and rhythmic. I study english as a foreign language at uni (english pedagogy actually) so we’re taught about this in phonetics and phonology (: in happens in all languagues!! pretty rad, isn’t it?

Quite excited for Sweden week, thank you so much for this! With the "i" and "e" thing I think the Swedish way is much more similar to how most European languages say them, English is the exception, certainly amongst Celtic and Germanic languages ( I am Welsh and speak Welsh). "i" is generally pronounced like "ee" (like the word "see") and "e" is more often pronounced like it is in the word "end." But then English is an absolute mess of a language anyway so the letters make whatever goddamn sound they want. (trough, through, taught, thorough, lololol makes perfect sense.)
@paulingvar

The English language certainly does not follow the original idea to use the alphabet as it sounds. And the vowels often express more than one sound, as in A ( sounds like ei )

About fyra -> fyr, we do that kind of stuff in Finnish too. The official numbers from 1 to 10 (that no one uses) are: yksi, kaksi, kolme, neljä, viisi, kuusi, seitsemän, kahdeksan, yhdeksän, kymmenen In my area they're often pronounced as: yks, kaks, kolme, neljä, viis, kuus, seittemä, kaheksa, yheksä, kymmene However, if we're counting something with our fingers, eg. "Hmm... how many hoodies do I have? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... 5 hoodies!", we use even shorter forms! yy, kaa, koo, nee, vii, kuu, see, kasi, ysi, kymppi My example about hoodies being: "Hmm... montakohan hupparii mul on? Yy, kaa, koo, nee, vii... viis hupparii!"

I'm in Canada. I remember being taught to count to ten by an elderly Swedish friend of the family, when I was a little girl. He pronounced seven as "hew" (rhymes with new). Maybe he knew I'd struggle with that beginning h sound as it is really pronounced by Swedish people.

When you count fast, you also pronounce 9 and 10 as nie & tie. Tjugo is actually from "tjog" which means 20, just like 12 means dussin. When you get to 30, it's actually tre-tio (three ten). So 35 is actually trettiofem (three ten fem). Fortytwo, (fyrtiotvå) is "four ten two". This logic applies until you reach 100, and by then you start all over again. This applies until you reach 1000. Then you start all over again until you reach 1000. 1001, ettusen ett (one thousand one) and you start all over once again. Swedish counting system is based on the fact that 1-29 are just names, they could have been whatever but at 30, it applies the previous logic between 1-29.

Seen a lot of comments saying that in portuguese we say double u (dabliu) but we actually say both ways. Some parts also say double v (duplo v). Also, both ways make sense, as the u, font wise, looked like a v before, though not completly the same. That’s why we have old museums where the word is written in a way that looks like MVSEVM. Hence why double u is used in a lot of languages... do remember that the mix of cultures also cause these things (wars, invading countries, alliances, etc). -> No research here, just basic knowledge I had, so better if you look into it if you’re interested.

My niece is Swedish (well, 1/2 Swedish 1/2 America) and when I visited her in Stockholm, I asked if I should ask shopkeepers if they speak English before I just start talking to them in English. She said, "No! They will think, 'Of course I speak English, I have been to school!'" She said assume they do, unless they are much older. If I speak Swedish to someone they assume I AM Swedish and talk so quickly to me I get confused. Haha!
