I love this bloke, the series, the actors, the sets, the locations, the bars even the traffic. Top class show Never forgotton.Priviliged to have been alive during this time. RIP Messers Thaw and Waterman and thank you X
Even more incredible, cameraman squished on the car floor filming. No rehearsal, no retakes, shot on film, driving around scenes with the phone box on the back of a lorry. On and on. Bought the series years ago, still watch in astounded. Comments on best episodes?
@@relic69 One of my favorites is "Don't look at me Mr Regan, I was here all night with you!" Can't remember the episode name but the villain used that line when trying to pull a stroke on Jack.
When Ron Atkinson was appointed Manchester United manager in 1981, almost 3 years after the end of the 4th series, he famously concluded his first press conference with: "I think we'll wrap it up there, lads. Anyone wants a quick one-to-one, see me in the bar - I'll be there for the next hour or so. Those of you who want my home phone number are welcome to it, but please do not ring me during The Sweeney. Thank you."
@@liverpoolscottish6430 Quite agree with you sir, John was a Momentous actor and modest too. Very good series and really ahead of its time. N fab time to grow up and luvly memories of my parents too. May I ask r u Scottish but born in Liverpool. Kind regards Glynn n greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands UK and Aston Villa fan since 1968🤝
@@glynnevans1851 I've always liked the pommy detective with all their nicking ("YOU'RE NICKED"!) and "well well well wha ave we ear👂" etc etc. Great series the sweeney with a cast that had, "backbone" (shame it didn't go a bit longer)
When I first started in the business, I spent a week shadowing on an episode of The Sweeney. It was a fantastic week, and I'll always remember it fondly.
Funny thing about John Thaw was that he always looked the same age - ie well in to his 50s... Here in the Sweeny he was only 35 or 36yrs old (Dennis Waterman was about 28)...
I reckon he was made up a touch to, "enhance his age" a bit further to look about 70yrs old in morse (mid 40's in reality) and he was only 60yrs when he passed because of, "THE BIG C 💣 💥") R. I. P 🙏
0:10 "Bloody Regan!" - the words of many a villain who crossed paths with Inspector Jack Regan! 👮📺👍 1:01 Nice big slab of Brutalist 1960's concrete - always great filming locations on this show.
@@markcf83 Fun Fact: Diana Dors' chracter called him Regal instead of Regan in that episode too!! There were so many running gags within the episodes!!
"we're the sweeney, son, and we havent had any dinner. you've kept us waiting, so unless you want a good kicking you tell us where those photographs are"
@@paulfrost8895 Never happen in spineless Britain. Too many do-gooders and senior bosses in The Job are cowards- they would far sooner throw a copper under the bus than support him/her. From somebody who knows........... ;)
I missed The Sweeny as a kid.It was after the watershed hours but remember watching a couple of the later episodes in 1978.It was always starsky and hutch yank shite that i always saw.
“When you joined my squad, I told you there was only one thing I wanted you to do: what was it?” _’Always be where you tell me to be.’_ “This is a fiver. This fiver says, that when my sergeant came out you weren’t there in the alleyway to meet him. Now, do I owe you a fiver?” We all remember the punch ups and screeching (low speed) car chases - around the now old streets of Fulham near the studio where it was filmed - but it really was a *superbly written* show. The extraordinary shifting Regan/Carter dynamic when George’s wife gets bumped off (murdered by accident, they got the wrong woman) has to be my own favourite... CARTER: _Well it’s got to be something important to be worth killing over._ REGAN *shakes head: _The first murder case I ever worked on was over an Ace of Clubs._
This is just a TV series of course but there was a time when the police were feared by criminals and respected by the public. Sadly those days are long gone.
Best cop show ever , probably. Nearest rival since then Spiral on French TV , with, if one could ever imagine it a female version of Jack . Drinks, likes the opposite sex, doesnt mind a bit of violence , bends the rules and loved by her team behind it ll life in tatters
Nah. If you don't include this moment in a 3 min best of... then pass. Regan arrives hungover at a stakeout. Carter greets him. 'Got a fag?' 'It's my last one' 'I only asked for one' Classic
