I recall hearing the original Swingles in the Sixties eg. Jazz Sebastian Bach and never forgot them, being further delighted that the 'spirit & format' were regenerated and still continue. I think it was late nineties or early naughties that I found recent recordings of great arrangements & precision vocals. They are amongst my favourite musicians, - I love most of the stuff they do! So sorry to hear Ward Swingle had passed. He will not be forgotten.
This is Carol Canning's arrangement, just a little updated to a more contemporary uptempo, beatboxed fashion. To hear it as it was released in "Ticket to Ride" in 1990s (with a more jazzy and relaxed feel) watch?v=rMlnLfMuYrs The arrangement was first released in the 1989 album "1812".
i would love to sing with these guys and gals i could harmonise very nicely i would not be any bother .x i have loved these singers since the 1960s genius to say the least x
EL GENIO DE THE SWINGLE SINGERS NO HA SIDO SUPERADO Y DUDO QUE LO SEA, PUES MARCARON UNA DISTANTE Y DISTINTA META, A LA QUE SOLO LLEGAN LOS PRIVILEGIADOS Y ESCOGIDOS POR DIOS.
Ward Swingle died today at age 89. He founded the group in the early sixties. He's been retired and hasn't had anything to do with the current singers that use the name. I like this modern version more than I thought I would. Their vocal affectations reflect modern style, but not so much as to be over the top and annoying. I like the slow rocker feel and the little places where the lead can improvise. I too wonder who arranges this and their other stuff. The internal harmonies work but don't have the tension and release of say a Gene Purling But then again, geniuses like Purling don't grow on trees. The early swingle groups was more about inovative ways to sing classical music. I don't find any of that in the videos of the modern groups. Ward Swingle was an innovator. He has left a geat legacy and a mark on vocal music. You could say that the great Manhattan Transfer were the love child of Lambert Hendrix and Ross and the Swingle Singers. I'll carry him in my thoughts to day and try to remember him each time I hear great vocal harmonies.
Hi Jack, as far as I´ve heard Ward chose his successor as the new leader of the swingles. And afterwards he was still connected with them by exchanging new ideas and giving some advices.
