The Swiss Art of Papercutting

Great Big Story

It’s amazing what Anne Rosat can do with a pair of scissors. This 83-year-old artist has been depicting life in the Swiss Alps through the folk art known as papercutting for 50 years. Using scissors, paper, tweezers and glue, she crafts intricate, colorful and layered works that are uniquely hers. Rosat invites us into her home in Les Moulins, Switzerland, to show us how she tells beautiful stories with paper.
This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis: www.genesis.com/

@@antoniax2102 Actually, being a biomedical engineer and neuroscientist I can tell you that self-deprecation usually indicates a strong will to improve oneself and advance in one's skill. Self-deprecation functions as a channel for a process called Long Term Potentiation which is the main component of long term memory formation. This process gets enhanced when it is reused often so even self-deprecating events can bring about improvement due to the topic being at hand in the virtual mindscape. Being critical about conscious acts and analyzing other people's methodology is a driving factor in ultimate mental prowess.

For anyone wondering, yes she‘s speaking French. This is because we‘ve got four official languages in Switzerland which are German, Italian, Romansh and French (+ Swiss-German which is not an official language though, because there are so many different variations and there is no written grammar). The Lady lives in the Western part of Switzerland where French is mostly spoken.

Amazing Lady! In this day and age of Cricut, Laser Cutters and other gadgets, traditional DECOUPAGE is a lost art. What I value most out of this story is the patience she had to go through and to finish her art pieces. Those are very ornate and exquisite. I hope that her pieces would end up in Museums. God bless!

I don't think it's dying out, because there are still quite some people around doing papercutting here in Switzerland. Even young men. I had a classmate in farming school who would make some small (10x15cm), fiddly papercuttings during the lessons while being bored. However, he had nearly always some of the best test scores and in the end of the schoolyear he giftet some of his works (the ones he mostly did in classes) to the teachers:) We see those artworks on a regular bases here, they're everywhere in switzerland, mostly very quietly and unnoticed done by normal everyday-hardworking people as some sort of relaxing and kept and never mentioned to someone, or given away to friends. Which may be the reason to the thought of it as a dying form of art. They are traditionally to this day always been done in black&white, coloured as this lady does i haven't seen yet myself. But then again she's from the french speaking part of our country, they are horribly unorganized and messy (her atelier...), but much more colorful and don't care to much about traditions. (which in this particular case i can agree with, because her colored cuttings look much more natural, interesting and alive than the traditional b&w ones)

@samuelbhend2521
@samuelbhend2521 5 лет назад
@@MsJoeyJody yes. i like it neat and to a certain degree also strict myself but the really sad part about it is, that everybody always contols and judges everyone... the romands (french swiss) live much more "laisser faire" they judge you less on your look and how it looks around you and your property. while in swissgerman part you get very quickly in trouble with other people if you dont follow all rules (written or not) 100%exactly. they go even to local governement to ask them to control your property on things they think you shouldn't do because they don't do it. thats sad. there we really could learn much from the romands and also the ticinesi (ticino - italian speaking part of switzetland)

even though she has specialized on papercutting, saying "color is the most important thing" is an obvious lie she wasn't able to mention the strong points of paper; such as different textures to change the material, the ability to interweave like strands, multiple layers to add depth etc furthermore, the color of paper does not give off a sense of vibrant, their nature is a dull earthy color & deteriorate over time what i don't like about saying such a lie is that it will led others to the wrong direction & treat papercutting is hard mystical thing that a few selected people can achieve

Well, there's a reason why there's a term "aging well". My mother is in her mid 60s, but you couldn't tell from looking at her, she looks like she's still in her 30s or 40s. Get a professional photographer and make up and she'll look like she's 20 and mid 30s. All in all, my mother side of the family is bless with aging well.
