Right, these boxes would already be solved by going through with basic logic first. This technique only works if you fill in every cell with their possible numbers first without trying to solve it first.

I think I understand it! 1. There must be a 6 in every column (and thus in col 2,5,8) 2. There happens to also be only 3 rows these 6s are found in 3. There are 3 6s that must be placed, but they cant be in the same row. 4. Therefore, we know that these 3 rows cant have 6s in other places, allowing us to eliminate.
