The Sylvenstein reservoir is located south of Lenggries, on the road from Bad Tölz to Achensee. The reservoir, which lies in front of the alpine backdrop of the Karwendel Mountains, receives its inflow from the Isar, Dürrach and Walchen rivers and operates two hydroelectric power plants that provide an output of around 25 million kWh per year.
The reason for the construction of the water reservoir between 1954 and 1959 was both to ensure a constant water level for the Isar and to protect the region against flooding. The 2 kilometer wide and 7 kilometer long reservoir holds 124.3 million cubic meters of water.
The Sylvenstein reservoir lies at the intersection of the four natural areas Kocheler Berge, Isartal, Mangfallgebirge and Karwendel and serves as a popular excursion and recreational destination, not least because of the many rare animal and plant species that have settled around the water.
All visitors to the Ahornboden, who come from the Munich area, pass by the Sylvensteinsee when arriving in the Risstal. It is such a great mountain lake that it is worth making a stop here. For many, the Sylvensteinsee is actually the day's destination from here to go on a hike or bike ride.
From the source of the Isar in Scharnitz, the crystal-clear and turquoise-blue Isar flows out of the Karwendel, along the Karwendel Mountains past Mittenwald, Krün and Wallgau, until it is dammed in front of Lenggries in the Sylvensteinsee.
Before the reservoir was built, this is where Fall was located. A small mountain village with wooden huts, where well-known personalities such as Ludwig Ganghofer and Ludwig Thoma liked to spend time in the mountains. King Ludwig II also came to the Karwendel after the fall.
In our time, flood protection is still in place, but the Sylvenstein reservoir has become a destination and a sight.
The Sylvensteinsee has an elongated shape. It runs like a fjord between Fall and Lenggries. The reservoir can only be crossed over a large bridge. From here you have one of the best views of the lake. The Karwendel Mountains on the horizon in the south are wonderful.
Winter hikes are always possible. No matter if there is little or a lot of snow, you can winter hike on Sylvensteinsee. The shore hike on the lake is well suited. It's best to start on the shore of the bathing area in summer. From the bridge you follow the bank up the Isar - similar to how the trail leads. You can winter hike as long as you want.
The Schronbach flows into the Isar directly below the dam of the Sylvenstein reservoir. The Schronbach waterfall is a waterfall near the Sylvenstein reservoir and belongs to the municipality of Lenggries. On the road from Lenggries in front of the junction to Sylvensteinspeicher, you can see it in two parts: to the right of the road the upper drop step, to the left of the road the lower drop step.
