What does it mean for our cultural moment that we are awash in a sea of zombie TV shows and films? Carl Jung said that when we’re unsure of what’s going on in our unconscious, we may project it outward, and we seem to be focusing on this projection of the zombified expression of human consciousness. What can we learn from this creepy, brain-devouring monster, and what are the deeper roots of this trope?
This episode explores all things un-dead, from its origin in Haitian culture, themes of death and loss, grief and ghosts, and larger questions of mass consciousness, or perhaps better put, mass unconsciousness. The symbol of the undead is an expression of our feeling of living a half-life, one in which mindless consumption is prized over the fight for individuation.
