The Last Horizon update to The Long Dark has dropped, and it's got something for everybody -- a new game mode built around suffering, a new mechanic that's so unpopular it's already been pulled, and a new zone rife with timberwolves and frigid weather. Sound familiar? Anywhoozleby, in this run we're taking the character we used to complete Buried Echoes and taking a crack at the final chapter of Tales from the Far Territory.
So what actually happened here? After three full Tales and dozens of hours completing them, my answer remains the same -- hell if I know. It's been a fun ride, though! We pick up where we left off last stream, hunkered down in the basement of a ruined building waiting for the electrofog to clear. The Polaroid we found there says to follow Rudiger's path across a lake and up to an unspecified high place. This requires us to slink past another pack of timberwolves and make what could be the hardest climb in the game (17:00), a very tall rope with no ledges on which to rest. Fortunately, there is a cave near the top of the climb to recover and warm up. After an extended wander that includes three more rope climbs and another rope bridge, we find the High Plateau where Rudiger intended to signal for help (41:30). The lore we find there suggests Rudiger knew his work could be destructive but was surprised by the extent of its impact, while the Foreman all but confirms he was a mole sent by ... someone ... to monitor Rudiger's work. The associated Polaroid directs us back to Bunker Omega in Forsaken Airfield.
If memory serves, this is the first time in these three Tales that we've had to revisit a location. Our departure is greatly delayed by an extended blizzard, but the one-way path back down the mountain actually drops us at Lotte's Rest, a cabin well away from the timbie packs (1:18:00). Astrid's eyes are firmly on the prize, so rather than explore the transition cave we found earlier we retrace our steps to Transfer Pass to rest and recuperate before returning to FA (1:37:30). The goat down from Whealey's Turn to the hangar goes off without a hitch (1:53:00), and we press on in search of Justy's Hovel and the Omega Bunker. We get an aurora that very night, but for some reason there's no signal on the handheld's bunker setting.
My initial fear was that I forgot to repair or turn on the FA transmitter, but a quick check shows everything is working (2:26:20). Oddly, the loot cache setting works fine, and after finding a nearby cache the bunker setting suddenly starts working again (2:32:15). Go figure. We finally locate the Omega Bunker (2:36:20) and step inside to wrap up the Tale. I won't go into specifics on what's in there other than to warn others DO NOT SLEEP IN THE NEW AREA YOU UNCOVER. There's a bug where sleeping there will reset the room and you'll be stuck forever. There is a capper on what happens to Rudiger and the Foreman, but even if I was in a spoiling mood I'm still not exactly sure what happened. Finishing the Tale unlocks a new badge and two new feats, one of which allows us to ignore cabin fever altogether. It's like someone at Hinterland heard my cries after all these years.
