I was born in Denmark and as far as I have been informed in Danish Schools in History Class, women had quite more equality than women in GB f.ex who had inherited laws from the Roman occupation and Christianity which came sooner to GB than Scandinavia. The Viking women could vote in council and also had right to inherit and owned the farms where they lived.

The polarized light stone is pretty interesting. I’ve never heard of that. The voice overs are a some bad examples of over acting, but aside from that comical annoyance, this was very intriguing. I’ve read that there where no true “women Vikings” by technicality but as assuredly as there where Vikings at all, that means there where women giving birth to them and they had to be a force to be reckoned with. This is a Good video.
@Dr.Yalex.
@Dr.Yalex. Год назад
really? it was featured in "Vikings" first season... The "sun stone" was/has been used since pre-historic times, including ancient Egypt and China, etc. Regarding "female vikings" - you read wrong. The word "viking" is the North-way military calling, literally it means "to cry god names". "vik" is slavic for "cry" , instead of the germanic "in/with eye"... while "ing" means same in slavic and germanic - "god/s". So, the males who went "crying god/s names" were called "veek-eeng" and the females were called "veek-eenga" or "valk-eer-eeya" (Valkyrie). Both sexes are known historically as (pronounced) "Veek-een-gee" FYI, Happy and Merry ...Xmas (literally - Solstice)

I was curious, and started watching. Five seconds in, the narrator says "In the sagas ... women too fight ... for a better life". Well, I am Norwegian and I have read all the sagas, and this is not true. Women do not fight in the sagas. They spur the men on (often by ridicule, like implying that someone is a coward if he does not seek vengeance for an injustice), but they do not fight themselves. I am not saying this because of some "agenda" other than truth. I would have loved it if women had been swinging axes and swords too, but they didn´t, at least not in the sagas, and I don´t like lying about history just for the sake of "lifting up women". That is feminism in a dishonest way. I also wonder why there is so much emphasis on our pre-christian religion in this documentary. There is a lot of superstition on the sagas (in particular "signs" of something coming, "omen", as we would call this today), but there is almost nothing about worshipping the Gods and sacrificing to them ("blot", as it was called). This was a really bad and amateurish documentary.
@RingerDaClown

They didn't mean physically. I think you are taking their use of the word "fight" too literally.
@pigdestr0yer1973
@pigdestr0yer1973 11 месяцев назад
@@RingerDaClown Well, what did they mean then? «Fight for a better life»? What does that mean? No, the implication here is that it was physical, in some way (they say this while the footage is of people fighting). It’s just dishonest. In reality, the female warriors was a thing of mythology and folklore: Shield maidens (skjaldmær) and the valkyries (valkyrje). It was all mythology, not reality. That doesn’t mean that norse women were not tough, because they probably were (they still are, both the Scandinavian and Icelandic women). But fighting in war? Highly unlikely.

@pigdestr0yer1973 figuratively. More like, they maneuvered socially or economically. But like was stated later on the video. A Muslim report said their were women in armor found dead in the battlefield after a battle. But that could have been a lie, or a dig at the vikings.

@@jenniferflower9265 You’re not a big fan of men, I take it. Well, it wasn’t like that here. Our society was a clan society («ættesamfunn» in our language). We did not have forced marriage, and if a man from one clan kidnapped or raped a woman from another clan, there would be rivers of blood 😉 You may be thinking of another culture. Women were not treated like crap in our norse culture (unless you were a slave, taken from abroad, of course). Learn a bit about a culture before you speak about it.

I am half Norwegian and half Icelandic, so i have read Viking saga`s since i was a child. And just to be clear, many times in different saga`s a person is referred to as a Viking. So a Viking was something you was, even if it also was something you could do. There is a difference between going viking and being a Viking, even if you could not be a Viking if you did not often go viking. And in this video they try to say Viking was just something you did. That is very wrong. And no, it was not normal that woman went on viking, actually i have never read about it in a single saga. But yes, as a wife of a Viking, i guess you could still call them a female Viking.. In the saga many Vikings even refer to a certain person as a famous Viking. By the way, i have never read about any shield maiden neither, but i have read about some female leaders, like for example the wife of Eirik The Bloodaxe that pretty much ruled Norway on behalf of her sons after Erik`s dead.

I've no doubt the unmarried ladies were a probable reason. They're all intriguingly beguiling, you know. 😉 And by the time the Norse were kidnapping Padraigh and selling to an Irish family, Christian women who'd caught the eye of an Norseman inspired them to convert. Viking women, like women of every generation throughout history have been motivated to stand up for themselves due to whatever circumstances they find themselves in that does not contribute to their happiness. They have been motivated and found strength to become Women of Courage by standing on FAITH. Our Founding Fathers of this country were compelled to put into writing that people in the United States of America come in the spirit of the PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS and should be afforded that opportunity.

@@TinaButcher-r6mSaying all "men" was simply a reference to humankind back then, and refers to both women and men. The word "men," comes from the Proto-Germanic "mann" to mean "people," and this is also how it was used in English up until very recently, just like how "mankind," and "all of man," also used to refer generally to both sexes up until the 1950's, before it became more aligned with the male sex. It is widely misunderstood today by people like you who think it's referring to men only, but this is a misunderstanding of the term. The constitution therefore refers to men AND women when it refers to "man." Fun fact: the English word "girl," also used to simply mean "child," in Old English, rather than aligning itself with young females. It could be used to refer to either boys or girls, and is another example of how certain words have become associated with certain genders today when it wasn't hundreds of years ago. You shouldn't be so quick to find offense in something you clearly haven't studied that much.

The majority of which was farmers most of the year, then occasional raiding, pillaging, looting, rape and murder and explore new lands as a bonus… and you can’t claim to be something that died out as a cultural movement X years ago with the Christening of Norway. You gonna be so embarrassed if you come to Norway proclaiming to be “99% viking”🤣🤣🤣 Everyone will be like sure👀🫣🫠 To go into Viking was something you did not who you were. Get educated before uttering nonsense. Also no actual proof the Vikings had tattoos or did tattooing in general. Nor were they blonde. This is a stereotype rooted in debunked racist ideology. History the Norsemen from Norway who were the ones who raided and settled Scotland and Ireland was dark. Blonde hair didn’t even origin in Europe, but Siberia Asia and was brought to northern Norway by the Proto Finns during the Last Ice eAge.

I, too, have 1% Viking blood. But I was born in South America, the land of the greatest empire on Earth, *THE INCA EMPIRE,* the most sophisticated Civilization on the planet which extended from Colombia to Chile. They appeared in the year 1000 AD. If they had appeared in the year 700 BC as the Roman did, they would have conquered North America, Europe, the Vikings, China, India, Africa, Russia and Japan. Fortunately for them, the Incas came too late.

There's no such thing as Viking blood. You are 1% of Scandinavian blood. Not every Scandinavians were viking. A viking is a choice. Viking is a pirate. Not a warrior. Being a Viking is not a good thing.

Reading the New Testament, it is very obvious that St. Paul had a very low opinion of what a woman's place should be, and far too many men were most happy to adopt this attitude. The Christian religion was definitely not favorable to women for centuries.

The women of the viking age were not the women we see in the movies. The women of Germany during the Romen expansion were more feared than the men because in most cases they were larger in size. And most Scandinavian women would be of similar size. So don't think of the pretty women of the movie when thinking of viking women.

Addendum: a Congregation of Crows arrived at the wake for the Fabulous Ms. Bianca (yes, a winter white cat). There were at least 30 of them, with an occasional fly-by from one trying to see in the window. A more disrespectful bunch I never did see - but before 5 minutes elapsed after her last breath, the crows decided I was not providing a buffet and all but one left. Crows are as weird as humans, sometimes.

I have never seen those sun stone navigation devices before, how clever that is. I have always found it hard to believe in women warriors but there is no doubt that women must have had some ability to fight even if it were just with simple knives. Women can use bows very effectively for example but the problem would always be to get their hands on weapons long enough to practice. If you are enslaved that is going to be very difficult indeed.

The Thing as the Icelanders practiced it is the first true democracy of all free men as landholders since the Athenian Greeks of Attica in their early days when a true democracy could work due to small population. Solon the first Federalist introduced the world's first written constitution to replace the chaos of democracy. Democracy is perfect for small communities but fails and is easily corruptable the larger a population becomes. Solons reforms were the basis of Romes turn to a Republic after the deposing of the last tyrant or king of Rome. A lower and upper assembly were introduced by Solon to lessen the power of the Archons of the aristocracy. It went far to build the first Republic but not far enough to reduce the chaos of democracy which the athenians favored. When Franklin, Hamilton and Madison met with the Iroquois Confederation, they found the key to the separation of powers necessary to strengthen Solons idea of Republic which came up short in both Greece and Rome. We Americans mixed Greek democracy at the local level with Roman Republicanism at the national level but found the confederation too weak to survive the challenge of the European monarchies. By instituting Iroquois Federalism it perfected the Federalist Republic that had been tried so often yet failed. By mixing all three we built a Great Republic that to this day is the heart of The Anglo Saxon five eyes alliance. Iceland however is small enough where the pure democratic thing would work much as it did in the early days of the Athenians of Attica. If ever they become large in population, they will need a more powerful Federal Constitution to strengthen the state. As it stands they are protected by the military of Nato which is controlled by the five eyes. So while Iceland can depend on the Anglo Saxon armed forces to protect them, they can also depend on the love of freedom amongst the five eyes people to allow them to govern themselves in a loose way as they choose. Iceland under Natos protection is an example of democracy as it can only work...with a small population and the protection of greater powers who have no need or want to conquer them. President Trump offered to buy Iceland which would have made them a protectorate of The United States like Guam or Samoa. That they rejected the offer did not lead us to conquer them or recind our protection. Much as Puerto Ricans are a free nation yet dependent on The United States and are a protectorate with rights of citizenship. The Icelanders have the same right to our protection but reject the right of American Citizenship. In short Trump offered them nothing they didn't already have but citizenship. That they reject citizenship doesn't mean that we reject our responsibility to protect them. It serves our vanity to allow a true ancient style democracy to live under our protection. Would we like to have them join the Republic and become citizens? Some of us would but we take pride in the fact that we force no one to join us while any may apply. Few would have their applications approved though. Iceland I think is one of the very few we would accept if they applied.

In all the Viking series - The Vikings, Viking Vallhala, etc. - women were equal to men, they weren't their husband's property & some were warriors! Like Lagartha & Freya & others. Much like other non-Christian, cultures like the Celts, women were equal & many were capable fighters. Which the Romans found out when they took away the lands of a Iceni King & whipped his Queen & Roman soldiers raped the 2 princesses, Queen Boudica recruited other Celtic tribes to revolt against the Romans. With Queen Boudica leading this army in a chariot, they defeated 2 Roman legions, the most ruthless & well-trained troops in the world! Their 2nd battle against the Roman legion at Londinium (London, 60 D) resulted in them burning it to the ground. Unfortunately Queen Boudica & her daughters were killed in their 3 battle. Just FYI & wondering if those viking sagas were fiction about women warriors. Perhaps white-washing their history by later Christian historians?
