I can’t see doing it for every show, but … maybe? Eventually? It would be a lot easier if someone came up with a tool that captured a video call like this automatically. Adam set up something rather complicated, with a third Mac, to capture this. Glad you liked it!
So much of what I've seen and heard lately about the Vision Pro has been about its shortcomings. I started wondering what the hell I was thinking to buy one. This episode changed my mind and made me more excited about having one than anything I've seen or heard so far. Thanks for that, guys.
A wonderful discussion - not just the content, but doing it for the entire time with this early version of personnas helped demonstrate where this tech is headed. TU both.
Noted! I’m not opposed to publishing the show like this regularly, but the big factor right now is the lack of a video call platform that lets you record this easily. Soon, I hope.
I have a fresher memory of what John looks like. I just can't remember when was the last time I 'saw' Adam. With that said: John's persona is eerily accurate. Adam's mouth movement is more forced, less natural, maybe the facial hair makes it harder to project it more naturally. Thank you for recording this episode using the AVP Format. pretty impressive. Always fun to hear and see the Pitchman Extraordinaire particularly discussing nerdy stuff with John.
I’m watching this while very high right now. John’s size story was both enthralling and excruciating. And the guest - what’s his name, Jimmy? - looks and sounds like everybody’s best friend. GREAT SHOW!
Glad they commented on why there eye's are moving around so much. John's seems much more natural. Adam's neck/body looks very unusual, and face looks less natural but might be since he is looking up more, and John is looking down more. It's all very dreamy, but still wicked cool. Love that they did this. Don't think I'd want it all the time but much appreciated!
Hey i don’t know. But I thought mine was incredible if I say so myself. Like I was shocked. I have pigmentation on my skin and it captured even that! Incredible.
Adam saying that users are learning how to use it seems very true. I also believe Apple will from users perhaps even more, like they did with Apple Watch.
Apple really needs to work on the beard issue. I know Myke Hurley had the same problem as Adam with his mouth not moving. And Adam looks like he's wearing his shirt backwards. The eyes, though. I think they got that right. That's really important. Not bad for the first version.
About the sizing - I also got a 25W during preorders and when doing the demo got a 33W. Afterwards I redid ordering online and I also got a 33W. So something about their formula must have changed
I would really love them to add proper multiuser support. As you said, guest mode is quite annoying if you need to give the vision pro to your wife, husband etc, since you need to do the calibration everytime you start the guest mode. It will be hard to get to the point where every member of the household has the device, and multiuser support is really needed. They need to add it to iPadOS also
This was a fascinating episode. Personas are WAY better than I thought they’d be. The only thing that never seemed very realistic was your hair. I hope you record more episodes like this with each iteration of Personas. Can’t wait to get my own Vision Pro!
Those personas aren't terrible but they're still in the uncanny valley stage. I'm sure that will improve eventually. At the moment though Adam's head seems like it's on backwards. Also the "tooth-flare"(?) or "mouth-flare" seems like something dental hygienists could take advantage of in marketing their products. Those issues notwithstanding though the capture and passthrough of the mouth movement and eye movement are pretty impressive.
All the persona haters have created such low expectations for this feature. Communication tools, from smoke signals to facetime, have always been about projecting face-to-face conversations across distances. In-person conversations hold a lot of value because the nuance in someone's body language and facial expressions communicate a lot of information - more than words some might say. Seeing John and Adam's facial expressions, when one of them turns their head, where their gaze lies, or John looking at the ad copy doc. Sure facetime on a mac would look better (but not stereoscopic). But keeping in mind the purpose of communication tools, and in the context of a VR headset, this is the state of the art. Compare to virtual avatars from meta - much less emotional information is communicated. Fine they are on the leading edge of the uncanny valley, not the trailing. I'll take it. I think Horizon Workrooms will end up looking like those websites from the late 90s where you shopped by going into a virtual mall with virtual store shelves. Just a total miss on the interaction model, I suspect because their product decisions are more informed by scifi books than HCI principles.
Enjoyable watch to see the both of 'you' chat. In my mind, I'm looking at two real people, for the simple fact that your personas are expressive and match the speech that I'm hearing. John as the host being slightly distracted by being 'in the thing' did make for a slightly different format (let's call it hanging out instead of an interview), which I didn't mind.
Steve had a really good line/analogy about these headsets. The thought he had was that this would work when this was the headphones for video. That we can have headphones that are as good or higher quality than most speakers. So in theory the idea this headset can be better than most theaters or TV’s is one of the best selling points is what Steve said was the only reason Apple wouldn’t make a headset. That’s probably how he would be talking about it now. He would have used that analogy, either on stage or in interviews, or both.
Actually, I think that a little of the Uncanny Valley thing is good. To know you are not watching the actual person helps. To think that a person could be visually impersonated perfectly is a REALLY creepy thought.
Surprisingly good versus the uncanny valley Polar Express vibes all the reviews/podcasts spoke about. It’s not perfect but the ‘assy’ real world of video conferencing is not a gold standard of interaction anyway.
The personas blur the mouth when the cameras can’t see what you are saying (guessing would be very bad) so when they drink a beverage you see the white blur.
The two personas are like night and day to me. John’s persona is the first one I’ve seen that looks like it’s out of the uncanny valley or at least on the border. Adam’s persona is a bit blurred, and looks like all the other personas I’ve seen. I can actually zoom into John‘s face, and it retains detail. It’s as if John’s persona had a high definition texture map, and Adam’s persona had a low to medium definition texture map. I was wondering if John was running a newer beta version of visionOS. It really is that different. Maybe it’s because of a better capture process - for example, John was in better light when he set up the persona, or held the Vision Pro in a more stable position.
Do you guys remember if you were mostly looking straight towards each other? It’s wild to me that this recording rendered you as facing slightly towards each other instead of towards us viewers.
The angle of your virtual camera is directly tied to where you place the other person in your field of view. Apple calls this the Persona Virtual Camera, of all things!
@@adam.lisagor So… then did John put your window to his right? To you, did it look like he was facing you directly, or was he looking over your right shoulder (as it appears in the video)? This looks so different from a TV news segment where the talking heads both look straight at their respective cameras. It’s like the two of you were sitting in the same room talking to each other. Or maybe I’m misunderstanding the whole thing. Is this simply a screen recording from John’s AVP?
I don't understand the discrepancy in quality. John's persona, while creepy and weird, is not super awful. Adam's persona, however, is a horror show. Why is that?
@@adam.lisagor true, I might be sitting on one right now, typing my reply. ;) Great episode btw, I agree with your take on how Jobs might have demo'ed Vision Pro.
Both of us were running VisionOS 1.0.x - not sure if it was 1.0.1 or 1.0.2, but I don’t think personas have changed at all during the 1.0.x bug fix updates.
