On the banks of the Oslofjord at the mouth of Norway's longest river, Glomma is a cozy port city of Fredrikstad.
It was he who was chosen as one of the cities hosting the Tall Ships Races in 2023. And it is always bright and festive, both for the residents of the city and for its guests. By the way, 126,000 people visited Fredrikstad during the regatta.
Initially, The Tall Ships Races in 1956 was conceived as the last farewell to the era of large sailing ships. It was attended by 20 surviving sailboats and the regatta was held along the route Torquay (Southern England) - Lisbon (Portugal).
However, the public interest was so great that later it grew into the idea of preserving maritime traditions and teaching young people from different countries the art of sailing. The regatta is held annually in European waters. And one of the rules of the regatta is that at least half of the crew of each vessel participating in the race must be young people aged 15 to 25 years.
Any monohull sailing vessel with a waterline length of more than 9.14m (this figure is related to safety requirements) can participate in the regatta. By the type of sail and the dimensions of the hull, the participating vessels are divided into 4 classes A B C, and D.
And of course, class A ships cause special admiration and children's delight, even among adults. After all, their length is more than 40 meters! And as many as 11 class A sailboats called at Fredrikstad in 2023: MORGENSTER, STATSRAAD LEHMKUHL, ROALD AMUNDSEN, FRYDERYK CHOPIN, EENDRACHT, CAPITAN MIRANDA, CHRISTIAN RADICH, BIMA SUCI, SORLANDET, DAR MLODZIEZY and our personal favorite ship built from Germany in 2011 ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT II. In the video, you will recognize it by its green hull and sails!
We want to say that making this video was a real challenge. All the days of the regatta, the most unpredictable and strongest winds did not stop blowing, which usually come to the southeastern part of Norway with February storms. But we haven't met them yet in July.
Also, thunderclouds rushed across the sky at an insane speed every now and then completely obscuring the sun and pouring showers on the participants and guests of the regatta. It turned out that due to terrible weather conditions, it took us 6 days to shoot this four-minute video. It was really very hard and wet!
But we did it and thanks to constant filming, we did not miss a single day of the holiday! :) And the strongest wind made even the laziest flags on sailboats beautifully develop! :) Which just looks great in the video!
