The Tavern in Austin, Texas is the oldest sports bar in the state. Actually, it's one of the oldest bars of any kind in the state, but their claim is "sports bar," so who are we to argue?
Opened originally as a grocery store, it was converted into a speakeasy and brothel during prohibition. These were both on the second floor while the bottom continued, we assume, selling the legal goods.
In 1933 the store was finally converted to the Tavern, and has remained a bar ever since. Today, it really is one of the better sports bars we've been to, with a huge array of televisions, a great craft beer selection and delicious tavern grub.
When you go, buy one of their 33 ounce steins and fill it with a local craft beer, then try their white wings while you watch a game.
