I've used a variety of weed trimmers in home applications dating back to 1986 and they've all performed well and as expected except for my Troy Bilt TB32 EC. The issue? Removing the trimmer "bump cap" - an impossible task by hand or with tools that most folks keep around the house. I have to drive the trimmer to a repair shop every time I need to replenish the line. The repair shop has a large, table-mounted vise-press to hold the outer reel (housing in which you place the inner reel before securing with the bump cap). I continue to use the trimmer as a matter of principle but I'm ready to trash it with the motor and everything BUT the head of the thing in good working order. The trimmer appears to be a good machine, but as we all know, machines, like organizations, are only as strong as their weakest link. Good machine = junk when it doesn't function owing to a design flaw like this. Bottom line? Steer clear of this trimmer at any price.
I read reviews user complaints that authorized repair shops refuse to repair this trimmer because it costs them too much money..so the 2 year warranty is very misleading.
You didn't install the air filter correctly in that cover. Engine oil in the air filter is a bad idea, it makes the filter too restrictive, sticky and clog up faster. If you want to rejuvenate the filter material, it's better to clean it with warm soapy water, rinse with water and use a cheap basic tire shine like armor all liquid and let it set for a few minutes, then rinse out the excess with water and dry the filter before installing. I've had polyfoam filters for 10+ years using this technique, not one problem. :)
I use 3 in 1 oil. Works great. Clean it with dish soap, fully dry, squirt some 3 in 1 oil, massage it in, then squeeze it in your hand while wrapped in a paper towel to remove excess oil. Many high flow performance air filters for cars use oiled filters. It extends the life of the filter and improves filtration. If it works for a racecar without restricting flow, then it will work for a weed eater.
Biggest waste of money ever. Poor design (gap near the head gets clogged with grass, twisting in the head), the line constantly goes back into the head (causing you to stop working and re-thread the line again), and the motor runs at a very low speed. Save your money and buy a better product.

Hi Benjamin, Two-cycle engines require oil that is labeled for use in “Two-cycle” or “Two-stroke” engines. Please let us know if you have additional questions. Thanks!
For some Troy Bilts you don't have to add oil to your gas. Just add regular gas to the gas tank on your trimmer and that is it. This is just one trimmer that you have to add the oil to the gas and mix it because its a 2 cyclinder engine.
I am extremely disappointed with this trimmer. After a few uses it it bogs down and runs at about half speed which isn't fast enough to engage the crappy clutch that nobody in thir right mind would ever want installed on a trimmer. The carb is not adjustable either so I essentially paid for something that is not usable. I have a Troybilt riding mower, push mower and trimmer. I'll never buy another one.
OK, SO EVERYONE KNOWS THIS- The Carburetor on this Weed Whacker is calibrated incorrectly from the factory. after just a few uses, mine began to bog down unless in half choke. I'm sure there is more than just me with this problem, considering my neighbor with the exact same weed whacker had his set the exact same way! same problem and all. There are two circles with flat spots on the top of the weed eater, with a flathead, you need to turn the one on the inside 1 quarter counterclockwise.
Someone gave me his, hard to start. Used it for a while, became even harder to start, stopped idling. It lost compression from running too lean! I have to pour oil down the spark plug hole to start it. I had to turn the idle screw all the way in for it to idle. Tired of MTD crap. I got one with the pull starter on the back, needed new carb and fuel lines. Hasn't had any problems
Mine works great. I adjusted the jets on the carb because it had no power and acted like it was running lean. I bought a single d carb tool from amazon and fixed it right.
Takes more fuel to start than a 747 jet engine. 10 chokes to start an engine is crazy . Any normal engine takes 1 choke to start. DO NOT BUY OR ACCEPT . DANGEROUS
I bought this trimmer and have used it twice now. After 2 uses I must say that this is the worst trimmer I have ever used and am so totally disappointed in my purchase. The starting of this trimmer is a huge hassle, the restringing of this trimmer is a huge hassle. My bolt that kept my two shafts in place was bent out of box and doesn't line up correctly. The power on stage 3 is weak at best, not happy with this purchase at all.
I purchased mine at Lowe's in June. I had no problems at all with it, has plenty of power I use it on less than 1/2 acre. Restringing is not a hassle it's very easy. You should have purchased an electric or battery trimmer with auto feed and pay the extra price for the pre-loaded reels (throw aways) Sounds to me like your lazy dude.
Please make a video or dumb it down for me. Must be a slow in the brain day for me because I see the two circles with flat spots but don't see how a flathead screwdriver can turn them.
thank you sooo much for the advice on the quarter turn of the inside circle with the flat side. Now my trimmer is running like a champ once again. I almost threw it in the dumpster!!! i could not get it to start running without being in choke position 2 and even then it wont spin fast enought to do the job right. But one small adjustment and whoala!!! just like new!! thank you again Jeremy scott!
2 comments minutes apart 7 years later…. Feels like a setup. Lol. I threw this POS trimmer away after about 4 years. Everyone I talked to that had this thing, required adjusting the carb.
