Chile I quit teaching a year ago and I can assure you the parents are often behind this foolishness. I had one tell her daughter to pop anyone who talks mess to her including the teachers. When I explained to her that her daughter would be expelled and arrested for fighting, especially if she hits first, she said "I don't care as long as she whip they azz!". Teachers have to deal with so much including children and parents who don't care and have absolutely nothing to lose. Teaching has become the wild wild west and it's not worth it anymore.

Parents. One of the top 2-3 reasons why teachers leave is because of YOUR child's behaviour! The entire education profession would dramatically change for the better if the children came in much better behaved. As teachers, we know that the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree, but at least have them come in with some respect!

@@cordfortina9073 That is what taking classes to re-certified does. PDs exist for that reason! However, they aren't much help, just regurgitated nonsense that doesn't help, because there is a huge lack support from parents and administrators on the matter. They can't even handle the reckless behavior of Pre-k kids kicking teachers and the teachers can't even file a report on a kid who kicked the para (who makes 75% less than the full time teacher) twice!!! I can't even mention the cr@p that kid has done to the other students. Too many hush hush and burying things under the rug. Thank God it is my final year in this broken system. I played enough Poker to know when to fold and walk away with the winnings I have left. $50 a day isn't enough to cover medical cost for blistered bruises, muchless cover the cost for basic mental care. The whole system is a pathetic attempt at a really bad joke and failing at that. I'm telling you all now. Every year another consultant who has written THE book on their time as a perfect teacher comes in to reinforce the message that the problem is the teacher… not politicians, not administration, not parents and not students… just you , the teacher, the identified patient who needs to be everything to everyone while bearing the blame for every problem.

We have more chief than Indians. All those positions in the district level are not needed and at the school level too. One principal, 6 vice principals in a school of 1000. Those people need to be in the classroom. And these administrators get paid so much for doing nothing to help the kids truly learn and be successful in life, but just bullying teachers while they sit in an air conditioned office. Wasting tax payers money. Money that could be use to pay teachers well deserved raise.

I'm another elementary teacher who left due to overwork and exhaustion from dealing with too many badly-behaving children. Many of their parents would not even give the school their phone numbers. These kids had no respect for adults and thought it was okay to physically hurt each other, talk back to the teacher, talk during lessons (loudly, so as to disrupt the teaching), throw objects, steal things, and more. It was shocking (and I have raised four kids of my own). Parents, you need to send your children to school with the expectation that they will try to be on their best behavior. We are not a babysitting service. If you parents take school seriously, then your children probably will too.
@happycook6737

If you are a parent and you appreciate your child's teacher-- write them an email of appreciation AND CC the school principal! If you haven't got the principal's email write in the letter that you request the teacher to show the email to their principal. It costs you nothing but has so much meaning to the teacher! It also helps the teacher's performance evaluation.

Corporate America will pay you big bucks if you can get their new meat fodder up to speed to increase their quarterly profits! -sarcasm Really though, you have a myriad of soft and hard skills having been a teacher. You can easily polish that resume using key target words associated with teaching and put your best foot out there to get a much better paying job. IF you dont want to do that? Go to ASIA right now, they have a huge teacher shortage and you can pick nearly ANY country and begin making great money. I abandoned teaching in America and went to Vietnam/Cambodia, I dont regret it. I am respected, well paid, work with a union that cares, and I am not micromanaged like I would be back home. Since you are highly qualified and have experience, you might be able to get a LUCRATIVE all expense paid contract in Korea or Japan and if you are careful with your money you can save and save and save. :)

@@atp2016 Where in America can the mother or father completely leave the workforce or find a WFH job that is light enough in demands that they can teach their children full time? Are you competent enough in each core skills set associated with STEM and have the resources to teach extra curriculars which will enrich their life such as "music, coding, art, and etc?" Homeschooling only works if you have MONEY. The average working American who is not straddling upper middle class is unlikely to have this as an option. This is reality. Online education is a SUPPLEMENT. Schooling is not just about learning, it is about socializing and learning proper behaviors/management strategies to afford them a stable future. It is one thing to send a student to learn about PI and how they can use it to calculate a circle via an online video. A teacher inside of a classroom should be showing them the PURPOSE of it "such as how cool it is to calculate pizza size or that you can use it to navigate within a specific area on a map where in our current social environment Gmaps might fail to give them the right directions."

It all starts with not recognizing how important our schools are that to get and keep good teachers takes money many teachers finish school with thousands of dollars in loan debt to become a teacher. I became a teacher $9000 a yr, my little brother went to work for $ 25,000 at the factory. Back then most people made $15,000-$18000. The teacher needs support people, to empty waste baskets, supervise recess, school crossings and bus loading. They need a Qualified administration, school nurse, and psychiatric help in the district for the severely messed up kids who distract and keep the rest of class from learning. They also need parents who care, and will do something if their child has a problem maybe the child needs glasses or a hearing aid, or to learn at home not to hit or bite others, not to yell swear words at others. That they must respect and obey the teacher. If the community will not invest in the future of their children their community will have no future.

Schools here in Australia are also struggling with a teacher shortage. We have the same issues as the US and many other countries with the administrative workload, micromanaging, classroom behaviours, and having our profession treated like free babysitting by both parents & politicians. As a result many teachers are leaving or retiring. I know of a 500-600 student secondary school that is struggling to find staff & subs so badly they've asked the state what the minimum staffing levels are before the school can't operate. They've been told 6 teachers. As long as there are 6 teachers on-site to manage up to 500-600 students, school is open for business as usual. Teachers there are routinely taking minimals with groups so large it is not possible to teach/learn, and they often need to be outdoors in the playground due to numbers. While this is not all schools, neither is it an isolated incident, it is becoming more and more common, especially in regional & low-income areas where it is hardest to find staff.

Yes, homeschooling is a better option for so many reasons. There are many support organizations out there to help, particularly CHEA of California, if you’re a Californian.

Yes, the support is definitely there. Just have to look for it.

Locally, people are afraid to sub. I was going to but then a friend was attacked by a student and then accused of abusing the kid. The only thing that saved her was the fact there was a camera in the room.

If you're a parent stop trying to be your kids friend and actually parent. Teachers are adults your kids are children support the adults in charge of your kids education

Scripting lessons is outrageous and downright counter-productive. Pacing needs to be appropriate to the students you are standing in front of and the depth you can go. Hint: new teachers are usually way ahead of the experienced ones. The time I spent on my own doing weeks of professional development activities on my own time was what made my teaching life exciting and challenging. The life experience and travel I brought to the classroom was part of enriching the instruction. Scripting is another term for strangling instruction

What are your thoughts on private schools or charter schools compared to public? Do they treat teachers better?

I mean from all the videos I have seen, the teachers are saying the classrooms are out of control and a few children with behavioral issues are taking all their time. Why do these children need to be in the classroom so the rest of the class suffers?
@89ladyeasha

So where are these kids to go? The Office? Home? The streets? They'll end up on the prison pipeline if ppl give up on them. It's difficult to deal with unruly children, but that's where good parenting comes in. If the parents get them right at HOME, it will much easier to keep them on track in the classroom.

@@89ladyeasha we need a specific school for those with behavioral issues that are everyday. if a kid spends majority of their school year with a dean or in a office how are they learning ? how is the system not failing that child? We legit need a whole different school for all those colorful students .

What a stupid suggestion "home school your kid". Yeah, because everyone's just so rich that they can spend their whole days doing that for YOU to have a side hustle for these home-schooling parents hah!

i want to be a teacher but nobody is encouraging about it. we need more teachers! but those of us who are trying to push through to get there are just being told that we're making a mistake incessantly. hard to have hope with all of that. im grateful teachers are speaking out about their own experiences and calling out how shitty the system is. i just would like to find ONE teacher who still finds teaching generally enjoyable 🥲

Listen to what professionals working in the field are telling you. Then decide if you like the odds of being happy in the job long term.

Hey Stella! I enjoy teaching music in a performing arts magnet program. However the principal although not perfect makes the school enjoyable for children and educators. Many times administration can make or break a teacher’s moral. I retire in 2025 but I won’t go back to public education. My tip is to complete the educational degree and consider options such as teaching online in which is very enjoyable for me. I do that as a side hustle gig. Also I would consider options such as media or technology specialist. I would consider those options. Good luck!
