What a great song, still appropriate today. Love the Temptations. Other favorite songs- My Girl, Ain't too Proud to Beg, Papa was a Rollin Stone.

The Ruffin Period and the Edwards Period were both awesome. The Temptations were the greatest of the Motown artists!

They had amazing voices & knew how to use them to try & make a better world. This is one of THE best songs from that era.

Nice! The Temptations dropped a ton of hits in their day. It's always great to see them perform live, but the studio version of this song hits so much harder. The Temptations got "serious" after the success of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" album. For more from them in that seventies style, check out "Papa Was A Rollin Stone", "Cloud Nine", "(I Know) I'm Losing You", and "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)". And for some of their sixties classics, "My Girl" is the bomb, but also check out "The Way You Do The Things You Do", "Get Ready", "I Can't Get Next To You", and "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" -- a banger The Rolling Stones covered some years later.

This was the greatest of their social conscious (era) songs! After David Ruffin left the group feeling it was all about him, The Temptations shifted their focus to alternate leads throughout the song and concentrated heavily on message songs, after hearing Sly & The Family Stone. They became leaders themselves, offering songs like "Don't Let The Joneses Get You Down", the original version of "War", "Message From A Black Man", "Superstar (Remember How You Got Where You Are", "Cloud Nine", "Runaway Child Running Wild (you MUST hear the album version)", "Slave", "Masterpiece", "Take A Stroll Though Your Mind", "You Make Your Own Heaven And Hell Right Here On Earth", "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", "Take A Look Around", "Plastic Man", "Law of the Land", Ungena Za Ulimwengu (Unite The World)", "Power", "Glass House" and, on their Live at London's Talk of The Town album, "Everything Is Gonna Be Alright." As a matter of fact, it was this overemphasis on songs of this type and moving away from love songs that caused Eddie Kendricks to desire to go solo and caused Norman Whitfield to write "Just My Imagination (Running Away From Me)" in order to appease him - but the damage had already been done! (Strangely enough, he recorded his own message songs like "Girl You Need A Change of Mind", "My People Hold On", "He's A Friend" and "Goin' Up In Smoke"!, though, with the exception of a handful or dance tracks, most of his releases were ballards)

The Temptation Inventing Psychedelic Soul back in the Motown days. Funky and thought-provoking, spitting bars of the truth years ago. Outstanding choice Biz. You play everything and remind people about learning from the past and relating to the future.

My favorite temptations song is Papa was a rolling Stone. But there are half-a-dozen different versions out there. You must do the one off of the album which is approximately 11 minutes long. An absolute freaking masterpiece.

This is my favorite era of the Temps. Masterpiece. I loved it when their songs became socially conscious.

Commodores had " Machine Gun" and " Slippery When Wet ".. EWF had "Shining Star" and "Getaway".. War had "Cisco Kid" and " Slipping Into Darkness " and the Ohio Players had " Fire" and "Skin Tight".. All are excellent tunes to check out.. thanks.

Grew up w/these brothers & others on my L.A. radio dial, then served the Army in the peacetime tail of the VN war. This song had meaning then as a young teen & still almost now. I love your reaction... and I post this about once a year for the past few years. I'm a person from the 1970's and heard this off vinyl back then. And you can place this song during every decade since 1970 and find it's relevant every single time. Nothing changes in our world.

My Girl, the 4 Tops. Father's day coming, I raised 3 step kids, I have 4 grown grandchildren! I am not sure, who sang it, but "color that man father".. would melt this old guy's heart. There was a lot more social commentary out of Motown and Staxx, then people remember. "Love Child" by the Supremes! For example. A lot of people walking around with tombstones in their eyes 👀...Steppenwolf "The Pusher. You and I look different and talk different , but the more I hear you, the more I think we agree on a lot!

The Temptations were the hottest Motown male group with Smokey Robinson and The Miracles and The Four Tops right up there. The Supremes were the top female group and did several duets with the Temptations. Movies were made about both groups.

Yes!!! I don't have a favorite, but these guys, exceptional! When I think of the Temptations, Love isn't the first thing I think of. Social issues is.

Nothing wrong in not knowing, but you learned today the Temptations were more than love songs for sure. They busted out the 70s with controversial songs "Runaway Child, Running Wild", "Cloud Nine" and "Psychadelic Shack". My fave by them is their 60s hit "Beauty's Only Skin Deep"! Other Motown tracks you would enjoy, Gladys Knight and the Pips' "I Heard It Through the Grapevine". They recorded and had a huge hit with this song in 1967, 3 years before Marvin and CCR did it.

Favorite Temptation song is definately Power released in 1980 featuring the bass singer Melvin Franklin-it rocks!! Lyrics are also relevant for today.

This song was released when I was in kindergarten. But, I remember hearing it on the radio and liking it, but not understanding it's FULL meaning. As an adult, I still love it and do understand it's full meaning. Thank you!

Favorite Motown artist was Mary Wells, but she was a sixties singer. The 5th Dimension were also good in the late sixties and early seventies.

Thanks for sharing, I don't remember this song. But it does remind me of a movie called PCU It is a comedy starring Jeremy Piven, George Clinton appears with Parliament Funkadelik. The whole movie shows the entire campus protesting etc. It is a must watch

I loved all of the music of this era. My only beef with this video and many more like it is we never see anyone playing a musical instrument - that is the long way around being careful not to imply the singers are not musicians. All I mean is the music was really, really good on so many of these old songs and we rarely see it. I was happy to see you review and discuss this one, though, Biz. You made some great points.

As much as I love the Temps softer sounds like "My Girl" and "Just My Imagination", I prefer their rocking side more. Songs like this one, and "Ain't Too Proud to Beg", "I Can't Get Next to You", "Runaway Child" "Psychedelic Shack." Of course the Temps were more than just love songs, Biz. If possible, I'd advise the studio versions which will probably sound better than the live versions.

I think it was waayyy more turbulent back in the 60s-70s. Many different sectors of society were trying to fight for rights they never had before. What’s confusing now is that a certain side wants to unravel what was gained and reel us all back to the 1950s Happy _hunting_ Days
