Me too, though I’m a white mixed with a little Nigerian and other stuff. I think that the little bit of Nigerian must have put a lot of soul in me, except for the dancing part, because my favorite music is R&B and Soul as well as Elvis who learned a lot from the black community.
As a white man I am glad I grew up in the 60's...these guys were the best, we only had two good radio stations that came in good. We had our transistor radio at the pool or park and we all loved the motown sound...great artists and groups...still listening to the good music that nobody can do or perform that way..bless them all

I once asked David if he had tried to sound like Sam Cooke. He said, "I had to have someone to pattern after." He said he also modeled singer Jesse Belvin. I think you can hear the influence both those singers had on David, but when he came into his own, he was David all by himself!!
David was “Magic” to that group. Those Vocals he layed down Put you at center stage with him. No one could touch him he would always take it to another level and we all knew it! Carissma, Charm, Very Handsome...He got my vote!
Classic David Ruffin. There will never be another fab 5 like these guys. They'll all still good to still keep singing and kudos but again, nothing like David, Eddie, Paul Melvin and Otis.
Over 50 years later, I am still in awe of the Temptations. With David's unending soulfulness and Smokey's timeless lyrics, it just doesn't get better. Thank you, Temptations and Motown for being my serotonin when I was an adolescent.
YES, THE GREATEST MALE GROUP SINGERS THAT THIS WORLD WILL EVER PRODUCE. NO GROUP HAS EVEN COME CLOSE TO THEM. THE DAVID RUFFIN VOICE WAS SHEER MAJESTIC. SO GLAD WE HAVE THESE VIDEOS TO WATCH AND RELIVE THE MEMORIES OF THESE GREAT MEN. I WAS AROUND 15 WHEN THEY TOOK THE MUSIC WORLD BY STORM. THANK BARRY GORDY FOR DISCOVERING THEM AND MAKING THEM THE ABSOLUTE BEST.
The cleanest and coolest lead voice I’ve ever heard! The smooth tone, the rasp, the falsetto when needed. This man had such a commanding voice, Levi Stubbs and Sam Cooke are in that family of stupendous voices!!!!
When I was 15 years old I had it real bad for David Ruffin. Twenty years later I got a chance to meet him in Dallas, TX, where he and Eddie Kendricks were performing. He was soooooo sweet (and very married). Thank goodness I had gotten over my school girl crush.
Ruffin just dominates this in every way. Besides the vocal, just watch the shrug of his shoulder at 1:30. He had the voice, the moves, and unbounded talent. Magnificent.
The class these cats had is untouchable, people can say how bad these days were but as a people we were more together and had more respect ✊🏽 for each other!
Yes "David" was the man in the group with also being a piece of work. He didn't think the group could work without him... Nevertheless I tuned in to hear this classic..... January 10, 2015
David Ruffin's voice will ever be remembered. He is definitely one of a kind. Whoever discovered him and encouraged him to pick up that mic must have been inspired by God. Their trademark hit: MY GIRL (1965) and this song ITS GROWING are fantastic! Other greats the readers here may want to check out: SINCE I LOST MY BABY and MY BABY. If I am not mistaken ALL the original members are gone. But they are music legends!!!
Ottis wasn't great, all those that followed him were. Paul, Eddie, Melvin, and especially David. They were the Temptations, I wouldn't buy an album without them, ottis drove all the greats away. So I say half heartedly f*ck ottis
I never heard of a background singer that had that much "influence." I guess when you're the last one standing you can write the history anyway you chose. David Ruffin. Simply the best there ever was!
O MY GOD , NO ONE ON THIS EARTH CAN SING THE WAY DAVID RUFFIN COULD SING, AND THERE WILL NEVER BE EVER , EVER ANOTHER SINGER LIKE RUFFIN..... I LOVE HIM. WOW WOW WOW
if anyone would like to bear witness to incredible mastery of timing and singing talent, check out from 1:27 to 1:37. pure perfection! David Ruffin was truly one of kind.
David Ruffin ♥️ His Style and his Commanding of the Stage, ♥️ His Deliverance of a Song ♥️What can you say. Pure Perfection. And Has Not Not Will Never Ever Be Replicated♥️ Simply the Best of All Times. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Talk about classic, THE Classic Five. Ruff'' in his finest lead singer voice. Rest in peace, and much love, health and happiness to Otis for keeping the name alive with him.
@@dennismotley5346 where were you where there were no violence? This was during the Civil rights era. What I remembered is segregation in the south and race riots in the north. America, the same yesterday, today and forever.
I get goosebumps listening to D. Ruff on this track...His vocals are absolutely unmatched... "Like the sadness in his little heart when he knows she's gone to stay" Shout out to Smokey Rob the master song writer for this timeless ballad...Rest In Power D. Ruff, we love and miss you king!
All due respect to the late Dusty Springfield in pushing pre-BBC exec's so hard to bring the Tempts, The Vandellas, Miracles, & early Supreme's for the "Motortown revue" in England. No dummy, was Dusty!
I have this entire concert hosted by Dusty on VHS. The Bible says “......train up a boy (or a girl) in the way....”. From infancy, my daughter knows everyone of these cats along with all their hits. Forever will I love 💕 them!!!!!!!
@@roslyncollins6307 PLEASE, PLEASE, find out how to get it posted on RU-vid. That would be worth GOLD. This is the best place to make sure it's preserved for history.
She didn’t push pre BBC execs. This was on ITV and produced by the woman behind the best ever music programme,Ready Steady Go! It wasn’t early Supremes, they were the top Motown act by this time. Neither did Dusty push to bring them over. They were touring and although going down well with the Mods playing to half empty venues. Dusty got Vicki Wickham of RSG fame to do a special. The Temptations were not on the tour and brought over just for this TV show. Which was my first sighting of them and confirmed what a great singer David Ruffin was. After this went out the shows on the tour sold out. Berry Gordy has always expressed his gratitude to Dusty, as have Smokey Robinson and others.
David really pore it in on this song. and he really show his talent here in taking this song to another level..i think this is one of his best performances!
I used to sit in my bedroom listening to this song rewind it over & over again, I was 16 at the time, Wow where have all those years gone I'm 62 now & still listening to this beautiful Temptations, David ruffin's voice was outstanding.👍
David Ruffin on lead Eddie Kendrick Otis Williams Paul Williams Melvin Franklin on background vocals Written,Conducted, and Produced by Smokey Robinson Instrumentation: The Funk Brothers Year: 1965 Album: The Temptations Sing Smokey
@@onenote9149 The lost a lot when Eddie left , they didn't have any tenor hits after he left by Damon or Glenn until 1983 whit " Sail away "which was sung by RON TYSON
Those crisps dance steps though This hit was definately overlooked & they should have included this song or maybe even the Temps rehearsing or doing the dance steps to this in The Temptations Movie
I was born 20 years after this song came out and it's addictive wow such amazing solid gold music back then really good talent david ruffin has a voice if pure gold.
William Poynter, Agree! The Temptations at their best. David at his best. Eddie and David were the heart and soul of the temps. They blow these groups of today out of the water..
Ethel Stevens Love. I agree. It probably had something to do with the two of them being the two Voices For the Temps. Ultimately however it was Eddie and Paul who were probably the tightest. They grew up with one another down south.
Robert Clopton : There were bills, worries, and sickness back then. However society were more communal and families were stronger. Everyone help everyone without a hidden agenda. This music made a great positive impact on people lives, unlike today. Take care, Cora Hudson-Guice
They’ll never be another group like that in our lifetime; that can sing, and with precision & style and can sustain real notes without the assistance of computers
I love this song! It's clear that David Ruffin was influenced by the late, great Sam Cooke. David Ruffin's stint with the Soul Stirrers gave him the same sound that Sam Cooke had which you can hear it in Bobby Womack and the late, great Johnny Taylor. David Ruffin's voice was clearly a GOD given talent.
David and Dennis along with the rest of the members started out on something beautiful that will still go on forever.Even though most of them are gone, but they're legacy will still go on and on forever.Thank God for Otis leadership and guidance with this amazing group.Motown was blessed to have this group to their roster.Like Otis would say Temptations 4 ever.
I am glad I lived in a time of the Best of Soul. The Temps. 4 tops and so many more. No one today can duplicate these real "soul times". I am 75 white woman and this music makes me young again. Truly the best ever!!
WOW!!! I didn't know they performed this. This is my absolute favorite Ruffin-led song. So happy to have found this. The vocals drive me crazy! So clear and crisp.
I love the Temps.... the original group.... Eddie, David, Paul, Melvin and Otis....NO OTHER group can come close... not even the new Temptations Wanna Be a Temp. I still play their songs and now my grandkids are hooked. The Temptations will forever be the greatest group of all time!!!
DONT LEAVE OUT EDDIE KENDRICK, HE HAD THE GEM VOICE ALSO.I'M JUST KEEPING IT 100, FOR SURE. TEMPTATIONS FOR EVER THEY ALL ARE MY GUYS .THEY ARE THE BEST MALE GROUP EVER. AND I HAVE TO GIVE THANKS TO SMOKEY ROBINISON. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR SHARING THIS SONG I LOVE IT , IT'S A TRUE SONG. AND THIS IS MY SKATING JAM.
I ADORED Eddie Kendricks too. Bought three of his albums when he went SOLO I LOVED girl u need a change of mind,😇 and "where do u go?" So soft and sweet. RIP Eddie. In Alabama there is a statue of him erected to commemorate his SUCCESS
OMG, that voice! I was little in their hay day and this sound reminds me of my childhood. A lot of family members are Temptations fans. David could sing soft like this, or with a lot of soul like in "I wish it would rain". He did get a lot of recognition, but I think he should have received even more. His solo stuff didn't get enough attention and I don't know why. It was top notch!
Awesome song! I’m a David Ruffin fan. This song bring back alot of memories; even though I was a toddler when it was out. My Mom played it so much its burned in memory. Ruffin, Kendricks and Paul were all that!!!
I would do the steps in the mirror like I was the SIXTH Temptation. My Mom laughed so much when she would walk in on me. I always could dance my butt off making up routines but can’t hold a note for nothing 😊
I saw them in concert a few times back in the 60s...their heyday, and every time i was really impressed with David Ruffin's ability to lead a song in such a strong and forceful manner, and he did it seemingly so effortless!
