We said we wouldn't do another show on drugs, but guess what?!?!
Season 3 starts with Steve, a recovery worker at Druglink, a substance misuse charity based in Hertfordshire. In his early twenties, Steve started taking heroin and it wasn't long before his life became unrecognisable. He lost his job and turned to crime, his family turned their back on him (rightly so, in his opinion) and he ended up doing several stints in prison.
However, he says that prison saved his life as, whilst serving time, something snapped in him and he decided to get clean - and has been now for over 20 years!
In this chat we touch on how it feels to be a heroin addict, the lengths an addict will go to for their next fix - and how, in the end it's not about getting high, but just about trying to feel somewhere close to 'normal'. We also get an insight into Government provided methadone as a method of at least getting drug users away from crime, despite it also being highly addictive.
There are some challenging topics here, but it was a really eye-opening chat. It was so good to see someone turn their life around from a state that many simply never recover from. Good on you Steve.
