The air was filled with tension and everyone in the crowd waited in excitement - although today would tragically end much differently than anyone could have expected. The starter pistol cracked and out came the horse, an exploding mass of raw muscle and sinew, galloping furiously towards the first barrel. Poised on top 1,000 pounds of trained, confident horse was a lean, calm, focused rider. Hands calmly but firmly clutching the reins, Regina Short and her partner moved in stunning harmony, their performance a testament to years of dedication and practice.
The crowd cheered as both woman and horse ran in a clover leaf pattern around each barrel, each turn executed with precision, her body language in perfect sync with the horse’s powerful strides. As the announcer's voice boomed over the speakers, Regina, poised and focused, acknowledged the cheers with a nod, fist raised high and smiling to the crowd. This was her element. She was born for barrel racing. Yet, as fate would have it, this run would etch her name in the annals of the sport in a way no one could have anticipated.

Helmet n vest is only required for bull riding, every other event, it's a choice!! Even some bull riders dont wear both, some wear just a helmet or a vest!!! Great video and these women r amazing on a horse, RIP to all that's had a tragedy like Regina!!!

If they required the pads the sport would die look at hockey and football safety is killing those sports. Also bullriding those pads dont work if that bull wants ya dead you will die. Also pads make you less able to move and ride to your full capacity

So, which one of the dozens of barrel racers and horses ranging from bays to greys was Regina and her horse? Several stills from the Calgary Stampede were included along with one of a chuckwagon race. A horse falling on a rider? Nope - she hit a beam. This is a mishmash of misinformation.

Lol, starter pistol! No, no pistol. Well trained, great communication, deep mutual understanding yada yada. Yeah no. Not anymore. Try rather harshest bit possible, big ole spurs, whips, over unders (longer whips), and usually horses on some sort of pain killer. Skill and focus? More like man handled a d forced, with horses often experiencing anxiety before entering the ring. Can you blame them? They are spurred whipped and mouths abused by super painful bits while in the ring. Maybe not all barrelracers, but the vast majority "ride" like this, look up starfishing. It's rampant. If a horse truly enjoyed this sport, this all would not be necessary. Riders that are actually GOOD, are few. I used to barelrace. I can't even watch anymore, makes my eyes bleed. Regina's accident had nothing to do with this, r.i.p. Regina. But this video is all wrong about this now cut throat sport. Lots of wrong info in this video.

"56% of horses experienced inflammation or scarring of the synovial pad (Villonodular synovitis) on the front of the fetlock joint due to repeated trauma and extreme extension of the joint. - 36% of horses experienced Osteoarthritis from a bone spur. - 13% of horses experienced bone chips (Osteochondral fragments)". A small sampler of the damage done to the joints of a horse as they torque around the barrels at high speed in the same tight pattern. Cowboys often express surprise at how hard barrel racing is to do when they try it - but no thought as to how hard it is on a horse. And at career's end, do they let the horse live the rest of its life turned out to pasture?

@@Bearwithme560 usually they sell them as kids horses even though there blown up, hoping the lameness will prevent them from harming the kid. Or, they fill them up on bute and run them anyway "because the horse loves it". Smh.

@extremecowgirl3629
@extremecowgirl3629 6 месяцев назад
@@Bearwithme560 absolutely agree!!! What dressage calls collection is forced flexion accomplished with bits and legs, not natural in the majority of breeds being competed. They claim the foamy mouths are "signs of a soft mouth", which is utter b.d., it's the mouths attempt to protect from damage, which usually occurs. And do t get me started on racing, kings sport that's glorified, when they start at 2yrs, bones and minds not ready AT ALL, many have ultra short careers with a precious few kept after for breeding, the rest going to slaughter. (Which is still a thriving industry except now horses are hauled far longer distances without proper care or even water and unalived using extremely questionable methods) I wish more people looked into things and realized what they THINK they're seeing isn't the truth.

Awesome vid! Horse riding is woefully behind when it comes to safety. Even the proper equestrian sports helmets are laughable and have been pared down to being almost pointless. Often, the biggest pushback is actually from the women, as apparently it wrecks the visual aesthetics, coz having great hair is more important than not having your skull shattered. It's a huge issue here in Australia as well. It boils up every year or two when some 15yr old ends up dead or with permanent brain injuries, then the issue dies down after vague muttering about addressing this massive problem in horse culture ...... Then it repeats, endlessly. The women can be a real pack of super-caty, cliquey, toxic Karens when they want, coz money and entitlement, while not ubiquitous, is still rife and nothing gets them riled up like having others try tell them what to do in their sport (they're as bad as the Kennel Club and Knitting Circles in that regard lol). (I have one tiny gripe about the vid though, but it's about modern youtube editing. The fake 'old film scratches' effect. Its everywhere these days to demonstrate that you're watching older footage, regardless of whether its only 5 yrs old. It drives me nuts and its terribly overused. The 'moldy vhs tape' and 'dirty tape player heads' effect is worse and overused even more. At least it's not overused in this vid)

This incident sounds like just a horrific random accident. One doesn’t usually associate barrel racing with rider fatalities. Abused, chronically injured, over medicated horses perhaps but rarely rider fatalities.

I don't think her death was "horrifying" ~ Every time a sports man or sports woman engages in these athletic feats (whatever the discipline) it is ALWAYS a calculated risk. Death is with us in life all the time. I guess it was her time to go. God Bless her and God Speed!

10:53 who’s Lara? Or do you mean Lana, the rider? Or the horse, Jenny, that you go on to say bolted from the arena in horseshoes meant for dirt? Smh, so unnecessarily confusing, that should have been caught on editing this. Edit: googled it because of confusion. Correction, the horse’s name is spelled Genny, and Lana apparently had dropped the reins and flew off when Genny slipped on the asphalt. So easy to properly lay out the the facts here 😒

This is a tragedy and horrifying! However, nobody talks about the horse......horses are not sport equipment, they are 1000 pound prey animals! In this event the adrenalin and anxiety is high.....the fatal and disabling injuries these animals suffer by having to do this event ( torn tendons, chronic hoof damage, cervical spine, facial and leg fractures.....just to name a few!) all of this with rather HARSH bits that are OUTLAWED in non Rodeo events! Not to mention spurring and whipping the horses pretty hard for WHAT????? Ah money of course .....and a buckle!!! Horses don't care about this stuff, these events are solely for the human ego!!!

lol you’ve obviously never been around horses. Everyone knows horses love their job. Most of these horses you CANT even stop at the gate. Horses don’t even need kicks or whips in the beginning bc they love running so much. Horses undertsand intention. You need to watch SECRETARIAT. Horses know who wanna be first, when they want space and when they wanna go. They can tell the same thing from riders. The horse was fine, the people who do these events KNOW what they are getting into

The run didn’t etch her name anywhere… COME ON! O-V-E-R-B-O-A-R-D… Legend??!! Really??!! Never heard of her. I don’t mean that in a hurtful way, mind you. I was raised in a rodeo, ranching family. I started competing in rodeo at age 5. I competed in jr., high school and amateur associations and filled my permit and bought my card with the WPRA (Women’s Professional Rodeo Association) at age 15 waaaayyyyyyy before the WPRA decided you have to be 18 before you can buy your card. ALL OF THIS IS TO SAY: WHOEVER WROTE THE SCRIPT HAS NO CLUE ABOUT RUNNING BARRELS or RODEO! there are no starter pistols, and competitors are not ARE NOT “barrel riders!!!”
