I’m born and raised in Chicago and I was little when this happened but I remember my grandparents and great grandparents discussing this. It was in the newspaper and everything. This happened in the height of the “crack era” when crackheads were doing savage things to get money for drugs. The police here never ever ran into those project buildings so if someone was being chased by cops they would run into the buildings and the other gang members would block the lobby by just standing there in big groups. The cops got tired of the hassle so when the guys got to that vestibule, cops stopped and gave up chasing them. The buildings had thin plaster walls where in between some apartments, someone could get into those maintenance spaces between the wall that could run the length of the whole floor. They robbed and stole things from many people that way and they did so without being arrested or charged or caught by the residents. It was sad as hell, man. I’m glad they tore most of those project buildings down because plenty of awful things happened there.

Ruthie's story is sadly a common one (outside of the odd details of her murder), very frequently people with mental or physical disabilities are entirely disregarded and forgotten. Police and medical professionals very often will treat us with less respect than we deserve- especially in the cases of those of us that suffer from hallucinations or delusions. I remember one story circulating a while back where one individual in a mental facility reported a bat in their room, but all of the staff assumed it was a hallucination, until they walked in the room and saw it hanging in the corner. It's a sickeningly common phenomenon for terrible things to happen to disabled people because everyone chooses to pretend we're invisible for their own comfort instead of giving us the support we need.
@ayethebeatgooff
@ayethebeatgooff 8 месяцев назад
I feel like people with less concerning mental health issues should be going into the medical field more often. A good back ground check and a psychological evaluation should be done. More people who can actually have some empathy towards the mentally ill being in those positions I feel would greatly increase the amount of proper care they receive.
@desireer6915
@desireer6915 8 месяцев назад
I also feel like it's a combination of things. Everything you mentioned, plus compassion fatigued (which is common anyways in medical fields), and also burnout. I think if medical professionals were more selfaware of these issues and treated every situation with professionalism and the same efficiency in response time, there would be less cases like what you and this video describe.

Have to highly concur with the leading subject of this. All of us on Disability (I've got both serious Physical & Mental Disabilities) have to say, never felt, treated even by the medical field like I was invisible, and like I'm talking to f'ing wall 98% time. Just cause I'm a cash cow(someone whose a guaranteed paycheck cause they charge the insurance 99% without issues). You end up becoming a bit more of an A**hole the longer you're on it (became disabled at 22, turn 39 next month). But, I've definitely become more of an advocate for epileptics, PTSD folks, and anyone just struggling through the process cause hell, you/they aren't alone. What does one do though when they live here on a greencard, lost their kids to each father, had 3 divorces because the husband's couldn't handle her and the hospitals won't keep her longer than 3days- sometimes a week? They get her meds straight and then she refuses to take them within a few days of being released and goes to hallucinating type drugs. I had a neighbor for 12yrs that I watched go through all the above and tried to help countless times and she just recently moved and now we just watch her hallucinate on social media.
@cr3237
@cr3237 Год назад
@@lar-zd9rs I haven't got all the answers. I think the root of the problem is that all the mental hospitals have been closed. In them, patients got the assistance they needed, drugs, therapy or just a safe place to be nutty in. (My mum worked as a nurse in one for years.) Now it's called 'care in the community' which obviously isn't working for many. If you have a mental illness that needs controlling with medication, but your mental health state isn't stable, (and if it was, would you need the meds anyway?) then you aren't going to take the meds you need to straighten you out. If you don't have family or very good friends to help you, then you are f'd. A vicious circle and the mentally ill suffer, and often their neighbours.
@lar-zd9rs
@lar-zd9rs Год назад
@Anon Y mous for years I tried to help and just be there for her and listen. Then it got so bad that many of us neighbors were having to call her in under the bakers act. I don't understand how she's allowed to live alone. If anyone tries to help her, she gets extremely violent with the tongue and blocks you out of her life after receiving help (refer back to bakers act comment) for a few weeks until she decides that she's high enough again to talk to us. I don't know how to help her and she refuses to stay on her meds and seek a drug program, go to counseling, etc. But yet, she's deemed sane enough to live alone... She almost burned down her apartment. I can't even imagine what that would've done to the other tenants if a neighbor wouldn't have banged on her door to wake her butt up. We check in on her, it's always, "I'm good. I'm on my meds" but, social media videos show something much, much different. I just don't know how to help anyone in this state is all.

I've been listening to things like this for a good while and have practically become numb to the horrors the world has to offer. This, however, actually made my heart hurt. Ruthie wanted to keep her neighbors safe in a place she recognized as dangerous. Sure, she was a bit over the top about it, but she really cared about her neighbors. She seemed like such a genuinely kind person despite her mental illness causing her such paranoia about the world around her. The police did her dirty, putting off checking on her just because she was "crazy." They might have been able to help her or at least get some details on her killers had they actually bothered to come when she called. I can't even begin to imagine how terrified she must have been. You think you're doing everything you can to keep yourself safe but then actual pieces of shit find their own ways in. Her locked door kept help out because they couldn't be bothered to confirm things were okay and the mirror she was looking for miracles in is what allowed evil in. Those two, I hesitate to call, humans robbed more than just Ruthie of her life and things, but they also robbed her grandkids of a true gem.

As we upgrade from older technologies, it's not unusual for older buildings to be rittled with weird corridors, tubes, tunnels, and passages. The ventilation systems from "back in the day" weren't nearly as effective or efficient (and thereby CHEAP) as HVAC systems today, and if the landlords can save a buck by removing old crap and just patch-working walls closed around it, they'll do it. Let an older building fall to disrepair in a bad neighborhood, and there's no telling what can be "discovered" by those intent to avoid detection... Yeah, the dead just sit there rotting. I remember seeing whole balconies barred off because people were thrown from them. Almost every window looked charred because of the fires. Where do I start ? First of all thank you for bringing her story to light. How horrible for her. It makes me very concerned that because of her mental state that the police didn't press it further. Especially because they did know her. There is a line in a movie that I have never forgotten. "Once people think you are crazy, no one will ever believe you." This needs to change. Again thank you for sharing your wonderful gift. I can't wait for the next one. You never disappoint.

@Anna-iz1tt
@Anna-iz1tt Год назад
I wouldn't feel bad for everyone who lived in that building since her neighbors denied to the police that they heard any banging or loud noises event though Ruthie's furniture, television etc... had been stolen. Surely some of those neighbors must have heard those heavy items being removed and did not say a thing. Also, how many in the building knew about the thieves behind the walls and did not warn Ruthie. Ruthie was seen as an easy target. She tried to keep her neighbors safe, albeit in an annoying way, but they did NOTHING for her in return EXCEPT the one neighbor who was genuinely concerned, furious at the police for there lack of action and who called the maintenance worker to open the door (something the police should have done).

OMG! You are so right! True story - last week - Monday or Tuesday about 3 am I hear one of my neighbors breaking down a solid wood 100+ year old door (really thick and sturdy is the point). But the scary thing is, the guy’s door he’s smashing in is a terrifying man. I was more afraid for the guy busting in the door so I call 911. The operator was so nasty! And honestly sounded put out that I was calling, I’m not kidding! Not until HE heard the door being busted down did he respond professionally. I had to tell him, “I’m just trying to keep one of my neighbors from killing the other!” I couldn’t believe how he responded. Sad, sad world.

It definitely does not show that at all. It describes ONE incident where unusual things were taking place in a building in a bad area. I partially grew up in a high rise housing project in the late 80s and remember being terrified as a small kid of going home. It was scary just walking down the dark enclosed hallways and taking the elevator into/out of the building. You also *never* stepped outside once the sunset and deadbolted the doors and stuffed tissue in the peephole. I would never wish that experience on anyone

And if you were lucky, the lights worked in the elevator if the elevators were working. I remember the stairs being slick and covered in scum that I presume was piss. I remember when I first saw you, When I first heard the music, When I saw the night through those shakey trees, and the shadows, I knew I had stumbled into Twin Peaks and The Blair Witch Project all at once. But I stayed because you invited me to, and I am so glad I became one of your charter subs. You hold me in Thrall like a vampire with stories, and now I can never turn away. ( And I did the Bloody Mary thing like in Warehouse 13 but thankfully nothing happened-- a reassurance to the other sub who tried it) You are so good, so masterful at this art, and although I am 76 years old and this is my only path into social media, I am so “enthralled” by what you do and the artistry of your storytelling-- well you are the UFO I hoped to see before I die. I salute you as a troubadour of our times- And I will listen whenever you travel through my little village as the peasants of the Dark Ages did and obviously as we do now. Thank you for these intriguing stories that pull me into the woods further and further. You are truly a master craftsman and I appreciate hearing the wheels of your wagon each time you visit. And I love your shirts a lot, also. My offering of coffee. And a sheath of wheat ( a muffin?) will come next time I sit and. Listen to the news from the neighboring village you just came from. You are delightful in a most darkly way!
