But charging is the real issue. PepsiCo and other such companies who charge at their home yards can afford to install Megachargers; usually have the area to install significant rooftop solar to augment the cost of charging; and have very low commercial or industrial electric rates. An owner-operator won't have any of these advantages, and will have to charge at public charging stations, none of which exist as yet, but will likely cost 4-5 times the electric rate the big companies enjoy. @@kensmith5694 Sorry, but you guys are ill informed and don't understand the logic for what Tesla is doing and why. Firstly, Tesla aim is to transition the world to sustainable option. That doesn't mean they do all the heavy lifting. If the Tesla semi makes others produce an EV Semi, that is a good outcome. Heavy vehicles are the principal source of transport emissions. Secondly, Tesla is working with Pepsi to undertake significant real world testing of what is a relatively new product and one that has enormous stresses on it. They are using the time to test the product while they build the Nevada factory where it and its batteries will be produced. The timeline being commencement of mass production in 2025/26. It isn't as if there is a lot of competition, and if they wait a few years and delivery an exceptional product, it will be bad for them. On the contrary if they make a half baked product and it suffers poor reviews, it not only affects Tesla, it slows down the EV transition. Thirdly, even Tesla is aware you need to build out some infrastructure if you are going to tackle semis. As for the Cybertruck, you miss the point. Firstly, the market for trucks in the US is enormous. Secondly, and more importantly, the Cybertruck is to the affordable car what the Roadster was the Tesla. Bring out a high priced car that then affords you to bring out a lower priced car. Tesla knew they bring out a high priced sportscar and sell it, just like they are able to sell a very high priced truck. But what does that truck have that is new? Stainless exterior, drive by wire, all wheel steering and 48V architecture. Tesla has long been adamant that they need a small and low cost vehicle and that the future was in autonomous vehicles and not the car business. Lets call it the Model 2. What does a low cost car need to be low cost? What does it need to be autonomous? Getting rid of parts helps ie steer by wire and reducing the electrical harness size and thickness. How about a stainless exterior? More cost upfront but potentially reduces the need for a paint shop and paint. More durable when it comes to vandalism on the roads. Tesla hasn't lost the plot. Your thinking is way too limited

If these trailers are being moved point a to point b (since most get docked for logistics) the trailers can be charged while loading and unloading, this reduces the consumer cost of shipping by paying for charging on site. My company owns 200 trucks. We would never buy one of these because they will never go from NY to CA in 3 days while hauling 45,000 pounds of cargo. It’s mathematically impossible.
@BigBen621
@BigBen621 4 месяца назад
According to Google Maps, it's 2,776 miles from NY to Los Angeles. Meanwhile, a Tesla Semi did 1,076 miles in a day during the Run On Less tests last fall, and that was staying close to the 55 MPH speed limit in California. So where is the mathematical impossibility? It couldn't do it on today's charging infrastructure, of course; but that's a logistical limitation, not a mathematical one.

@BigBen621
@BigBen621 4 месяца назад
@@hiram1923 _And which payload did it carry on these 1076 miles?_ That's a fair question, that I hadn't delved into before now. The Tesla Semis in the Run On Less tests were instrumented for speed, distance, and state of charge, but not for GCVW or payload. The NACFE spokesman stated that they typically left the Pepsico Sacramento Bottling Plant at a GCVW of around 70,000 lbs., which would be a payload of about 35,000 lbs.; and by comparing energy efficiency on various routes, a rough estimate of load can be inferred. Based on this, it appears that the Tesla Semi was fairly lightly load at the start of that day, perhaps to 20,000 lbs.; and since is was was making deliveries and returning to Sacramento to recharge, some of the miles were with an empty trailer. So based on this, the OP is correct that a Tesla Semi in its current configuration, and with the current charging infrastructure, could not have gone from NY to CA in three days with a payload of 45,000 lbs. This is kinda an academic exercise; because these are day cabs, and not intended for long haul or OTA applications-and this has twice the range of any competing BEV truck. So it seems likely to me that diesels will own that segment of the industry for quite a while, likely a couple of decades. But time will tell...

I hear nothing about delivery times; charging delays; or mpc dynamics per weight and road conditions. Wherever there is silence there is a betrayal of trust. Everyone boasts the pros of their product while remaining silent on the cons. I know truckers, and their timetables are intense. Some drivers have been known to doze off in Jacksonville, FL and wake up in Boston. There's your autopilot! It's like the military man with night duty and he learns to sleep standing up! The drivers you talk about are not professional company drivers (and I mean no offense to long-haul drivers or husband-wife teams etc.). Trucking is very different between someone who spends his entire WEEK on the road and someone who is HOME every night; different tractors, different schedules, etc. I am very PRO Semi but I wouldn't use it to haul Produce from California to NYC for AT LEAST a decade; and likely neither will anyone else. Even if they NEVER built a single public charging station, the economics RIGHT NOW say that big companies will switch local fleets to electric as fast as they can once they have been proven internally. (In some ways those economics are better, wholesale electricity at a Walmart RDC is CHEAP! KWH on the road? Not nearly so!)

For a Tesla semi to be able to carry anymore than itself the whole front 1/3rd of the trailer would have to be full of batteries, making them heavier empty, than today's trucks weigh loaded. Defeating the purpose of what a freight hauler even is. You people make me laugh. And where are the 120 nuclear reactors we'd need for the extra electricity to charge them?
