It's fitting that this castle is now such a tourist attraction because the Teutonic Knights were in a way precursors of organized tourism. Inviting knights from all over Europe to visit the picturesque Prussia, kill some pagans (and possibly Christians, but they were surely bad) and generally have a good time. I remember reading about additional attractions like role-playing the Knights of the Round Table and such. Among the most notable guests of the Order were the Bohemian Kings Ottokar II and John the Blind, and Henry of Bolingbroke, future Henry IV of England.

Every Teutonic castle was in the eye sight of at least one other castle so they could message each other using smoke signals

After the Soviets took power in Poland many books, movies and other works of art about Polish-Russian relations were banned for obvious reasons, but Communist in Warsaw and Moscow created many movies with anti-German undertones to keep to animosity between Poland and Germany alive, most notable example was "Knights of the Teutonic Order" in my opinion it is a mediocre film, but the final scene illustrating the Battle of Grunwald is really well made for a 1960 film, one of those huge battle scenes from eastern block movies with hundreds of soldiers as extras.

My wife and I visited it when we were in Poland - fantastic place. We took an Aida cruise (German) and I was surprised they still call Gdansk, Dazing.

One detail I would also have mentioned is, that the Teutonic Knights were invited by the Polish King Conrad of Masovia to help him pacify and christianze the old Prussians. Since they raided his kingdom quite rigorously. So they Order was not there by chance or because they had nowhere else to be but, they were tasked to help Conrad of Masovia.

I may have some surprising info to contribute on the history of the old Prussians. Surprising, because it comes from my own DNA. The conventional thinking, which you mentioned in your video, is that most of the old Prussians were the victims of genocide, with the region repopulated with German settlers, along with some Dutch. Well, a few years ago I had my DNA tested to see if I had any French ancestry as Koenigsberg, where my father’s family originated from, was a destination point for the Huguenots (and my grandfather did possess a distinctly Gaelic nose). I also suspected some Dutch ancestry, but mostly, I suspected to be confirmed as majority German. Here’s what’s interesting: I am only 16% French and German, part of 29% broadly Northwestern European. I am 70.2% Eastern European, but neither Polish nor Lithuanian. This is especially telling as both the paternal and maternal branches of my family came from different regions of East Prussia. To me, this suggests the Teutonic Knights were not as thorough in their purported extermination of the indigenous Prussians as previously reported and that there were fewer settlers from Western Europe as previously stated as well. Curiously, I live within walking distance of an aboriginal Canadian reserve. The people there, though native, speak only English, have English names and belong to a Christian Church. Settlement by Europeans here in Alberta took place less than two hundred years ago, accelerating a little over a century ago in fact. Comparing what happened here to East Prussia, whose indigenous people were themselves blond, blue eyed Europeans who resembled their conquerors very closely, I can see why people thought they may have been exterminated. In short, they became culturally German, but remained a mostly homogeneous community in their ancestral lands. Even speaking their own distinctive dialect according to my mother. So the true irony here is that they were not the victims of ethnic cleansing or genocide by the Germans in medieval times, but were ethnically cleansed from their ancestral lands in recent times FOR BEING GERMAN! How bizarre is that? I’ve got more to say on the subject, but I think I’ll message you on your patreon for that.

Wonderful program as usual. Three additional points, 1) the Teutonic Knights fought for the Hungarians against the pagan Cumans in Transylvania after their expulsion from the Middle East. 1) They were sent by the Pope to battle the pagan Prussians after an appeal from Duke Konrad I of Mazowsze (a Polish Duchy). They were given the Chelmno Land as a base. 2) In 1525 the Teutonic Knights were secularized and their new duchy became a fief of Poland. The new duke was Albrecht von Brandenburg-Ansbach (1490 - 1568, NOT 1620-1667), 3) Marienburg (Malbork) Castle was, of course, rebuilt by the Poles after WWII.

Teutonic knights? Their name is "Deutscher Ritterorden", German knights order is the correct translation! They were military monks like the Hospitalers and the Templars, but different from them not subject to the pope, but to the emperor of what was the "Holy Roman empire of German nation". Their monastic order was nearly identical to the one of the Templars. Who are the Teutons? The Teutons were a Germanic tribe who before Cesar's time invaded northern Italy and were beaten. Since then there is no news about them! Heaven knows why English-speaking literature speaks of the Teutonic kights. The German knights order was founded during the 3rd crusade in Accra, and existed for centuries. But the Teutons appeared before Cesar, and then were never heard of again!

It’s the German Order and German Order State, it was basically a Baltic crusader colony of the Holy Roman Empire/Austria, a tail which later outgrew the dog and took over Germany, but it’s crusading colonial origins always informed the Prussian settler pioneer spirit, and empowerment of Baltic German aristocrats and introduction of settlers became a central theme of German/Prussian campaigns in WWI, the Interwar conflicts, and WWII.

Hi. Sory to say, you have completely skipped important for Teutonic developments period called Poland's breakdown into provinces (1138)(outcome of Bolesław Wrymouth's testament). Without internal situation in Poland between lats say 1290 -1340 Teutons wouldn't be capable to seize most wealthy part of its realm - Pomerelia and Gdansk. BTW What was going on in Poland in 2nd century of "provincial divisions" is in my opinion most important and most curious part of its history.

Its really cool to think that if the Turks were never kicked out of their homeland in Central Asia, Germany may have never existed the way it did. WW1 may have not happened and Poland-Lithuania may have continued existing.

5:20 As far as I know, one of the propositions, was to move order to Moldavia, while Prussia would become a duchy. It didnt happen, though.

Lithuania taking christianity from Poland. Masterstroke. Denying Teutonic Knights very reason for existence. Of course defeating them on battlefield helped too, but once more and more travellers reported Teutonics burning churches during border skirmishes, it was harder to recruit Western volunteers, and even German ones. By late 1400s it was game over.

The City of Acre was the capital of the Crusader state for almost exactly 100 years until once more resurgent Muslim forces re-captured most of the holyland. Acre was the last City to fall, most of the remaining members of the other military orders including the Templars and Hospitallers went down fighting on the wall to the last, but not the Teutonic order, with their perhaps more rational ethos negotiated a way out. All the military orders who existed in Acre at the time of the final Siege and the fall of Acre, they all fought, still the city fell, we know however the Teutonic Knights headquarters, which they called their Convent, actually negotiated it’s surrender to the victorious Muslims the Mamluk Army which had broken in and the survivors left. So in a way the Teutonic Knights went out with a bit of a whimper rather than a bang.

Whether we like it or not, Germans had a significant influence on European history(even i thought French and Brits had bigger influence. But, i was dead wrong). Besides, did you know that the largest national group in US is not English but Germans? US being still the powerful nation, it's like we see Germans everywhere.

Yes, the teutonic castel in MALBORK IS A MUST VISIT ! Be there early, it takes 4-5 hours for a complete tour. I had to quit after 2 and a half hours, since my bus was leaving........I was overwhelmed, and I still feel bad about leaving soon. I knew enough Polish to pass as a local tourist, so I saved enough money for a pizza. (the foreign tourists are charged extra, since they use a guide who speaks foreign languages). Imagine that : the tour includes a visit to the SHIT TOWER.........IT WAS HILARIOUS.

Hi! You missed the part when after conquest of pagan Prussia, the Teutonic order started invading CHRISTIAN Poland and Lithuania (at the start Lithuania was pagan). Teutonic raids continued even after Lithuania became christian state. Teutonic order was just one of the ways of German expansion to the east and religion was just an excuse used ever after it was totally absurd.

i have been to Marienburg often. You have to give credit to post war Poland for doing an excellent reconstruction after the war was over. Its important however to stress that the real name is Marienburg and it only became renamed to the Polish Malbork in September 1945. A lovely view is from the river across from the Marienburg on the other side. This road is a main connector through Marienburg and you will pass past the castle without even wanting to , ie . in transit. If you have the time dont miss it. Gruss. R.
