The Thalidomide Tragedy

Between 1956 and 1962, more than 10,000 children were born with wide ranging birth defects; a consequence of their mothers having taken a new "wonder drug"; Thalidomide, promoted as an effective and safe treatment for morning sickness.
Thalidomide proved to be far from safe. The drug company, Grunenthal, had only carried out their studies on one animal model, mice, and had not tested their new drug on pregnant women.
The Thalidomide Disaster affected many thousands of lives and is thought to have been responsible for countless miscarriages. However, in the wake of the scandal, our relationship with drugs and the companies that manufactured those drugs was forever changed.
The Thalidomide Scandal paved the way for drug reform (including the 1963 Kefauver Harris Amendment in the United States and the 1968 Medicines Act in the UK) and is the primary reason why the medications available to us today are well regulated, safe and effective.
Watch my video to find out why the Thalidomide Disaster happened and why it was allowed to continue for as long as it did, how Thalidomide results in birth defects and congenital anomalies and how new laws and regulations resulted in much needed reform.
Happy Viewing!

My mother took thalidomide while pregnant with me in 1959 and yes I have a birth defect in both of my arms. It's not been an easy life but I'm a survivor!

I want to know if early critics of Thalidomide were referred to as conspiracy theorists.

It's crazy that the doctors gave it to the mothers and then everyone was horrified by the baby, like it was their fault!

Gosh i've read about the whole thalidomide crisis many times but seeing those short clips of deformed kids you put in the video really made my heart break again 💔 It was a disaster indeed...

Yea.. I feel that it was only a matter of time before a disaster of this scale happened; due to the lack of oversight and government regs.. In a way, I’m so glad we live in a world where something like this is very unlikely to happen (again)

There was a girl at my school in the UK who had Thalidomide damage, only her arms were affected, her arms were really short, about a third of the normal size. Other than that she looked normal, she would have been born around 1960 or 1961. She was not in any of my classes and I never got to know her, I wonder what happened to her.

Then Thalidomide turned into a miracle drug in 1999, extended the lives of multiple myeloma patients for years, a fatal cancer hitting 30,000 people a year, now called REVLIMID, hundreds of thousands of people extended their lives last 20 years thanks to Thalidomide

My uncle did a survey in 1975 leading to his refusal of his wife taking it): Out of his classes of a total of 300, 50% were found to hve the drug through mother.

Yup. This really goes to show how intricate human development is. Thalidomide was probably consumed by a lot more women than we realise. However, most of their children ended up fine… because thalidomide is only really dangerous during a crucial window of foetal development.That’s what made it so hard to connect the dots and get it off the market.

Thalidomide has been a wonder drug for myeloma patients since 1999, God bless the genius who decided to try it on terminal multiple myeloma patients starting in 1997, who would have thought this drug turned out to be a lie saver?
@NeuroEverything

Yea true it definitely took a lot of “bravery” to try thalidomide given its tragic history - goes to show that drugs can be repurposed should they undergo thorough research and validation!
