Title: The Therapeutic Relationship as the Vehicle for Transformation and Change
Presenter: Dr. Edward Teyber, Dr. Faith Holmes McClure
Dr. Edward TeyberDescription: In this engaging and highly interactive lecture, Drs. Teyber and McClure will discuss ways in which the therapeutic relationship can be facilitative to client engagement and success in treatment. The presentation will draw heavily upon material found in Teyber and McClure's highly acclaimed book, Interpersonal Process in Therapy: An Integrative Model. Attendees will learn a model wherein the therapist-client relationship is a core and primary component of the treatment process. The relationship can provide clients with a "corrective emotional experience" enabling them to develop their own voice and begin to think, feel, and behave differently and with more flexibility to significant others in their lives. Teyber and McClure will frequently rely on role-playing client presentations to powerfully illustrate this integrative model.
Faith Holmes McClureBios: Dr. Edward Teyber is professor of psychology, director of the psychology clinic and president of the Foundation Board of Directors at California State University, San Bernardino. He received his PhD in clinical psychology from Michigan State University. His work has focused on marital and family relations and child adjustment, child-rearing practices and attachment styles, and the counseling relationship.
Dr. Faith Holmes McClure is professor of psychology at California State University, San Bernardino. She received her PhD in clinical psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her clinical and research interests are multi-cultural issues in mental health, and at-risk children, families, and adults, with particular focus on those who have suffered trauma.
Interpersonal Process BookIn addition to the groundbreaking Interpersonal Process in Therapy: An Integrative Model, Drs. Teyber and McClure also have co-authored Casebook in Child and Adolescent Treatment: Cultural and Familial Contexts. Their texts are studied at colleges and universities nationwide.
This has been a presentation of the School of Behavioral Sciences at California Southern University.

Wonderful information. I wanted a therapist like this, but she abandoned me and left me feeling shamed and abandoned. Not every therapist is a safe person.

1:28:14 " 'I can see your experience, I can tolerate this disturbing story, & I can be with you in it. You're not alone. You have someone who's now different than probably literally anybody else in your whole life, who has been able to listen to you & hear you & take you seriously, & not dismiss it or elevate it. And I can be with you in it.' And all I'm doing is empathic understanding & validation, & it sounds simplistic. And it's good as gold. And there's way too little of it in this world, & there's way too little of it in therapeutic practice." Compelling. Dr. Teyber is exactly right that there's way too little of this kind of verbal expression of attunement in therapeutic practice.

There's a song I heard and it sings the guy sings about well everything he likes happens at night and he likes likes likes you have to listen to the song and I'm anyway that's where I come up with simple way simple word as far as a psychological meaningful and getting to the point simple if you don't like something you're not going to well you just won't say you just won't sit in it but if you like someone like something that might annoy you you'll like it enough to stay with it

Yes and it's okay to be different we all are different we all have different thoughts your thoughts are your thoughts and my thoughts and my thoughts but it's whether we're thinking evil thoughts or heavenly thoughts that's what makes the difference between the good and the bad but everybody's different and it's okay to be different it's okay to have different thoughts and but being on the same page talking about a subject we could skip a few pages and then they wouldn't neither one of us would know where we're at we would be lost in the story or in the conversation so sometimes we might forget to add part of the mail to understand one another you can listen to someone saying something there about killing something or other and next thing you know you've been called the police for him and all that and they was talking about getting into the chicken or something but really and truly you should never talk about killing anything when it comes down to therapy cuz trust me I've learned that's a bad thing it can throw someone's into pcsd fit in a well it's just a big mistake it all has to be good stuff non abusive all I have to be loving positive nothing negative except for it if you make a mistake if you make a mistake it's not it's just a mistake it's not held against you or anyone one another it shouldn't be

The word like like like like like like like understanding what like means what it feels like is well a little more simpler a little more elementary but when someone likes someone or likes something you get the picture well they're enjoying their self because they like one another they like the instruction the day like being corrected or praised that they can do that for one another and the word like is what I see that everyone will they like it laughing out loud to say you have to love everyone I have to say this but you don't have to like everyone but we want to bring in that like for it because well it's a little more simpler for me anyway how do you like it laughing out loud
