Thanks again to Dr. Golove for both his time and for lending me the space-control theremin seen briefly here and (more thoroughly) in my previous video.

The Otamatone is in a way a smaller modern incarnation of the theremin-cello. The Jumbo Otamatone is about equivalent in size and octave range to a theremin cello, those are only custom built to order. About 7 years ago in Europe there was also a redeveloped theremin cello model made by Augusto Triani from Italy (housing & mechanics) and "theremingenieur" Thiery Frenkel from France (transistor/solid-state electronic circuit).

as a long-time viewer of this channel, i personally love the partial shift to the more non-biographical, more history or interview-adjacent projects - that's not to say that i dislike the existing biographical content (bc m i really do and it's also well-prepared~), but this new stream is something i'm enjoying a lot! thank you for all your work!!

*Notes* • First, I'd like to thank new Patron *Wayne Barker* for supporting the channel. Patrons get access to various behind-the-scenes content such as longer episodes, book reviews, and other odds and ends, as well as just helping to make these videos possible. • 15:16 Robert Wheeler is actually Edison's _great-great_ grandnephew.

Very cool, I can get similar stuff with fretless bass, E-Bow, and a volume pedal.

Theremin Cello is a Theremin played like a Cello

what're the differences in this as opposed to a regular theremin or a ondes martenot?
@ClassicalNerd
@ClassicalNerd 2 года назад
I have a whole documentary on the "regular" (i.e. space-control) theremin. The ondes Martenot also creates pitch on a heterodyne circuit. The most substantive difference is that Theremin's instruments consistently split pitch and volume between the hands. The theremin cello is touched whereas the space-control (typically) isn't.

Interesting, I played with a three 'string' ribbon controller at Synthfest UK in October 2022 that could easily replicate the Theremin Cello. The ribbon controller was very expressive 🤔

Couldn't this be somewhat easy to recreate? Since a majority of the things seem to be transferable to more up-to-date tech (resisters instead of bulbs, for example). The "volume" hand's pully system could probably done a lot more simply now.
