You don't realize how cutting edge the special effects were in this film. Way before CGI came onto the scene it was up to special effects artists to make or break a film like this. Tom Savani was at the top of his game in the 80s. I use to love going to the magazine section and reading Fangoria magazines while mom shopped. If we had the extra money and my grades were good she would buy me one. Good memories.

Ah, that sweet "don't hurt the puppy!" to "kill it with fire!" progression of The Thing. Never fails to deliver.

In my opinion, this is the greatest horror/suspense movie ever made.

Someone I follow online mentioned that a friend hadn't seen the Thing and she recommended it with the description of "It's about a group of men who adopt a dog and it changes their lives forever." I mean, she's not wrong... I recommend the Princess Bride, an absolute must-watch. Also Imagine Me & You, because I like it (though I'd be surprised if anyone else watching your videos has seen it).

The guy trying to shoot the "dog" at the beginning was yelling "Get the hell away! It's not a dog, it's some sort of thing! It's imitating a dog, it isn't real! GET AWAY, YOU IDIOTS!" If any of the main characters spoke Norwegian, the whole situation might've been avoided

16:24 he destroyed all contact with the outside world, transportation, radios, dogs, used for sledding. he saw on the computer what would happen if the "Thing" manages to reach civilization, and how fast it would infect everything it touched. so he did what he thought he had to do stop it. glad you watched this horror classic! the original came out in 1956, called "The Thing from another Planet". great reaction! 👍

You said you wondered what it must've been like to see it in a theater - well I saw it when I was a young teen and the whole theater was freaked out! It was among the scariest movies I remember seeing in my youth. As you said, it was a horror buffet, a little something for everyone. Good job watching it!

So many people get caught up in his wild rampage and his eventual takeover by the Thing, and they forget that he was the first to figure out what a threat it truly poses to all life on the planet. This was a remake of a film from 1951 titled “The Thing from another World.” It was cutting edge and very scary in its day. John Carpenter wanted to remake it with more modern effects that would allow them to be more faithful to the original story that it was based on. Also, my sister was in the Navy and did a summer in Antarctica so this science station was actually pretty accurate and well done. Good video and thanks for watching this. It’s a favorite of mine too.

I've only seen one reaction video for this movie where the person watching said "there's something off about that dog". Everyone else says "what a cute dog, why are they shooting at it", it soon becomes very clear the Norwegians had the right idea. This is my favourite horror movie, it's a masterclass in fear and paranoia with practical effects that still look good 40 years later.

Stumbled across ur channel and stopped because…. The Thing! My mom shared with me all her favorite movies of the ‘50’s, ‘60’s and ‘70’s and I got to share with her my favorite movies of the ‘80’s and ‘90’s before she died. I learned that just because something is old doesn’t mean it’s irrelevant. I absolutely LOVE that you’re open to these cinematic experiences as I was and that you genuinely seem to appreciate them as I did. This film has my all-time favorite practical effects sequence. The shot of the head sprouting crab legs to scuttle away and everything that led up to that point beginning with the CPR.

When I saw this in the theater back in the day, half the people got up and left in the middle of the "gross-out" scenes. Nobody had seen anything like this at the time. I loved it. And I usually don't like gore, but this was so outlandish it was entertaining.

My dad was stationed in Antarctica in 1973 at McMurdo station. They filmed this in rural British Columbia

The Exorcist (Directors cut) ...if you dare. Nominated for 17 Academy Awards winning two. First horror movie ever nominated for Best Picture. Was originally rated X, but was negotiated to an R rating. If you are under 18, you may want to consult with your parents before watching. A true classic that raised the standard for the future of the horror genre.

I love the ambiguous and bleak ending. Even if Childs and McReary are not The Thing, they're most likely going to die anyway. I think there's a comic book sequel to this (and a videogame?) but I love how this ends and I don't feel the need to know more because not knowing makes it scarier. Great reaction! Can't wait for the next one. I hope you do more horror movies, I highly recommend The Witch (2015), in my opinion that's the best horror movie of all time and I've watched lots of horror movies.

My father sat down and watched this with me on HBO when I was ten. He spent the whole movie jump scaring the hell out of me. Fav movie to this day, even talked about our watching this movie in his eulogy.

John Carpenter is a celebrated independent sci-fi filmmaker who often writers, directs, produces, edits, and does the music for his movies, which rarely made money.

I am new here and I am really enjoying your stuff! I watch a few reaction channels, but nobody appreciates filmmaking the way you do...I love how you research the making of the films, the actors, the filmmakers, etc...and give a wonderfully insightful and informed critique at the end...nobody else does that! Keep up the great work! Also, if you like this one, may I suggest the 70's version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers with Donald Sutherland, Jeff Goldblum, and Leonard Nimoy? I just wanna plug the original "Rocky" (1976), it's #211 on IMDB I believe. It's so much more than just a sports movie, that's really just the setting.

Blair accidentally infected himself. When he is dissecting it he taps it with his pencil. Then just minute or so later he touches the end of the pencil to his lips as he is thinking.

According to supporting material that spaceship is not the ship of the "thing" itself. The ship is from a hapless alien who landed on another planet, and the "thing" attacked the crew and took it over. There was a struggle to stop it, and that's why the ship crashed.

It's a great film, which has become a cult classic, this is a remake of sorts, the original film was from 1951 and was called 'The Thing from Another World' it was one of John Carpenter's favourite films, a bit of trivia for you, in one of his earlier films 'Halloween' the original film is being played one a TV set which some kids are watching.

Great choice and a truly worthy reaction to one of the greatest SciFi/horror movies of all time. Seeing it in the theaters there were lots of out loud "Whoa, WHOA's!" Almost as frenzied as the audience for The Exorcist and that's saying something. I'd say you handled it pretty well and I know I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction. Not a happy ending that's for sure. If you want to continue on the dark side and haven't seen Se7en yet, it's a can't miss. If you're ready for the lighter side and haven't seen Groundhog Day, that film is worthy, especially at this time of year. Looking forward to whatever you decide to give us next.

I saw this in the Theater in 1982 when I was 12 years old with family & friends. Many People walked-out during the dog massacre. But this movie is like a fine wine that gets better with time. It's more popular today than it was in the 1980s. This is now the Gold Standard of all Horror Movies. It holds it's own after 42 years. These Special Effects are better than anything that has been made since. But even had the visuals not been as good the raw suspense and music would still carry this movie.

It's title is from the story it's based on "The Thing From Another Planet" I think it was called. There is also a 1950's version I saw on late night TV once in my youth. Don't really remember it. My dad says in it's day the first one was scary to him. Another one that rivals this in the "practical" effects and makeup is "An American Werewolf In London". Great cast and dark humor too. Best werewolf transition in my opinion that holds up today.✌️Anyone else want to see her react to that?👍👍

After you watch Terminator 2 which is my all time favorite movie, I suggest my second favorite movie The Fifth Element which is a fun Sci-fi action movie.

Me: Waiting for Whimsory to comment on how cute the poor puppy is and how horrible the men are for trying to kill it... then anticipating her reaction when the dog shows its true face... 🤣 This one came out when I was eight years old. Caught it on VHS when I was maybe ten years old and saw it on TV many, many times growing up. One of the best practical effects horror movies EVER. Everyone should see it at least once. 😁

Blair was absolutely taken over by The Thing when he's smashing up the radio equipment and screaming about how has to stop the alien. Notice he doesn't have his yellow shirt on. The movie makes a big deal about explaining that The Thing rips through your clothes when it takes you over. He got taken shortly after he left his office with a gun. Best place for it to hide when you think about it. Who would you *least* suspect of being an alien than the guy who seems the most determined to stop the alien? The Thing doesn't care about the radio. Damn thing doesn't work anyway. So it's more useful for parts for its mini spaceship that it's building. Same reason it smashed the helicopter. It also knows someone will come eventually. It's waited over a hundred thousand years for someone to come, it doesn't mind a few more months.

Another John Carpenter film worth checking out is "Starman" with Karen Allen and Jeff Bridges. It makes for a very emotional companion piece about alien life, to "The Thing". John Carpenter's scores are iconic, and while he has seemingly retired from filmmaking, he's still making music.

I love how long she was searching for a name for the thing before she realized why the movie is named the thing.

When I worked for Carpenter he was directing a movie that went straight to video! It was based on a book that I loved called Watchers (Dean Koontz) so in the nineties I rented the video, didn't find my face and the movie was very good and stuck to the book story. The first Watchers movie is unwatchable so the same company hired John to do it right, which he effin did. Straight to video. I feel ya, John. Watchers 2, which is actually Watchers told right. Rob Bottin, the make-up and prop guy, collapsed from exhaustion working on The Thing. John is a natural born director, he never shouts, never micro-hovers, never acts like a director acts, whatever that is.

Nice reaction Whimsory, always cute and entertaining. If you liked the effects with this, I highly recommend you watch Child's Play, the 80's were the decade for practical effects that looked super realistic and eerie. The Thing is one of my favorite Carpenter films after Halloween and They Live.

this is a classic and even though it's old and some parts look cheesy by today's standards, it holds up really well overall. the monster effects were incredibly groundbreaking. that one scene where the Bennings-Thing is caught by the group and howls.. that's such a disturbing and chilling sequence. it was mostly just acting but it's probably my favorite scene in the movie

I always liked that the Norwegian guy was basically a spoiler for the movie right at the beginning... if you happen to speak Norwegian. 😄

Big Trouble in Little China, keeping with a Kurt Russel theme.

"...what kind of computer program is this..." It's called Plot Device. It moves the plot along. You see it, sometimes updated versions, in many, many movies. Because computers are magic to people who don't understand them, which _then_ was most of the population, and even _today_ is still quite a few. "...it would be infecting everyone by now..." If you believe the computer program, it would take about 3 years before it managed to take over the entire human population (27,000 hours). "...is that a dinosaur..." Dog, I think, actually. It's using forms it's already copied. "...and I'm scarred for life..." He _did_ say it would have 'a lasting impact on you'. :) The fun bit is not knowing at the end. _Did_ they manage to kill the thing or not? We can be _fairly_ sure that Kurt Russel's character isn't it. But what about the other guy? Or maybe something else just hiding away?

Lolz I saw this in the movie theaters back in 1982 I’m old and proud of that lolz this movie was super scary as a teenager when i saw it in the movie theaters. The thing is a classic based on a novella called who goes there? Anything involving Kurt Russel is a priceless gem 💎 John Carpenter who directed this also did a sci-fi movie called “They Live” with Rowdy Roddy Piper(a professional wrestler ) I highly recommend it. It’s epic and I’m a huge wrestling fan and sci-fi guy. I think you’d love that movie. It’s got hilarious one liners and non stop sci-fi action and a strong message about humanity. Fabulous stuff. 👌🏻Check it out one day. It’s dynamite 🧨 Boom!!!

You wanna movie that will scare you so badly and 100 trillion percent perfect acting on every level then watch the movie “Breakdown” with the man, the legend, Kurt Russel. That movie was on at 4:30 a.m the other night and although I’ve seen it before It was dark in my room, to quiet, and I was still scared. it is one of the scariest movies I’ve ever scene and I’ve seen a lot of movies. The antagonists(the evil guys) are so scary and Kurt Russell is an absolute Sasquatch of an actor. That movie is on a different level from start to finish and his acting skills are so underrated he puts on a monster of a performance in that movie and the bad guys are scarier than scary. I super highly recommend it. It’s not gory but scary and I mean scary with unbelievable acting by Kurt Russel. It’s called “Breakdown” from 1997 with Kurt Russel trust me you have to watch it you will love it.

I don’t know if the original film, The Thing From Another World, is on your list, but it’s a classic too. It’s very well made and has fantastic dialogue.

'Golden Corral of disgusting imagery' is a wonderful metaphor. Loved the reaction and your edits. Also you'll have a lot of people who want the ending to be 'solved' explain that the whiskey is actually gasoline, but that's purely a fan theory - there's no actual evidence within the movie either way, it's meant to be ambiguous and keep you guessing. Just didn't want you thinking you'd missed anything important.

The Thing always knows it's The Thing. It just acts to survive. It can take the form of any creature it's absorbed on the countless planets it's been on.

I've been enjoying your reactions, and now I'm subscribed. Very fun to watch you make it through this classic. When you decide to dip your toes into the Western genre, I'd like to suggest Clint Eastwood's THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES, a classic that is well worth any film buff's time.

10:23 that flower with teeth is actually the dogs’ tongues and teeth. Also 22:28 the guys’ reaction to Clarke getting shot was perfect. I don’t think any of the actors faked it. They genuinely looked shocked 😂 and the last two guys are both human according to the director since he considers the comics and the video game canon

Many, many decades before you were born, and in 1951 when I was just a little boy (seven years old), the original "The Thing" film scared me so much that at certain points I actually hid under the seat in the theater. My parents let me go to see it by myself and didn't have a clue what it was about... they paid the 25 cents child's admission, gave me a dime for popcorn and left me while they went shopping. The full name of the film was "The Thing From Another World," didn't have the body-snatching premise of the remakes, but it did have something the others didn't... snappy dialogue and acting that stood in for gore and CGI effects. It was in black and white and a film that set the standard for sci-fi and horror films to come. I know many would say the later film was superior because of the technical improvements in special effects, but I feel that's an unfair comparison. I suggest you watch it someday to see how us old timers got the bejeezus scared out of us by something as simple as a good story, fast pacing, and actors who didn't over emote. (Trivia: James Arness, who later played Marshall Matt Dillon on the long-running "Gunsmoke" was the monster in the 1951 version. In the 1982 version, when MacReady is watching some of the Norwegian footage, there is an extremely short moment showing part of the spaceship landing area from the 1951 film. Both the 1951 and 1982 films were based on the novella "Who Goes There?" - although the director of the 1951 film (Howard Hawks) chose to leave out the shape-shifting content and go with a simple alien monster, although a monster who was a vegetable (watch the movie and you'll see what I mean). Also, the 1951 film actually had a woman in the cast, unlike the 1982 version.)

Hopefully, you'll get the chance to watch "A Clockwork Orange" someday. That one is hard to figure out in one viewing, but it is a masterpiece of bizarre movie making. Stanley Kubrick the director was a brilliant film artist.

This movie has one of the most WTF? openings ever. First you see an alien spaceship, then next there's a guy in a helicopter trying to shoot a dog. In the first five minutes the viewer is completely confused and horrified. If seeing "grossed-out face" makes you laugh, then it's time to watch THE FLY (1986). 😄 Starring a young Jeff Goldblum in probably his best performance on film. (yes, better than Jurassic Park)

Great monster horror movies are: "The Fly" (1986), "The Mist"(2007), "Jurassic Park" (1993), "Silent Hill" (2006), "A Quiet Place" (2018), "Cloverfield" (2008), "Predator" (1987), "28 Days Later" (2002)........
