Something that no one really talks about Semester at Sea money... like yes, people make videos and blog posts about how much SAS costs and how to save money on SAS (heck, I've made those videos too), but no one talks about the range of wealth on the ship, and the stress that money causes. In reality, money issues when travelling can cause a ton of friend drama, and feeling like you have less money than others can be awkward! So... I thought at least by talking about it a bit we could all then have a platform to discuss it and answer each other's questions! I hope this video helps you a bit!

i'm so happy you made this video because I've been wondering what money is like on SAS because all the vloggers I see seem to have a lot of money to spend and one day I want to do SAS but I don't have much money and don't want to spend too much money.

yes!!!! it’s totally possible to travel cheaply and not make yourself absolutely broke while still getting a great experience out of every country!

My friend group had all different levels of money and people with money wanted to do the big things but didn’t want to leave their friends and the people with less money didn’t want to hold their friends with more money back. Definitely tough to navigate.

it is!! it’s a weird topic too because you don’t want to make anyone feel bad, or feel like they can’t spend as much time with their friends because of how much they want to spend outside of the ALREADY VERY HIGH tuition rate. feel free to leave any tips on the comments for future voyagers that are going to deal with the same sort of thing!!!

I worked on the Fall '18 voyage as an RD...I didn't think too much about it, but it's pretty clear you're right. The dead giveaway for me was: 1) The auction (which I coordinated, so I certainly didn't have a problem with it) 2) Fancy dining. I saw so many people at fancy dining weekly!

Oh it was great fun - I also volunteered to lead so many field programs since we got them for free or discounted if we chaperoned. I'm applying again because, well, it's SAS! You get it I'm sure! (even during a COVID year) I couldn't afford any of the items either - no shame in that. I was glad the totals got so high from the auction (I think my auction raised like $44,000...I was *told* it was a record for a voyage) - but I knew I wasn't spending money like that. I didn't even start ordering food from the kitchen bar until the last few weeks of the voyage to cut costs (let alone paying for the laundry!)

hey jess!! I was wondering if you could tell me how often you brought your laptop in-country with you? I'm trying to decide whether to get an anti-theft backpack that can fit my laptop, or if I should just opt for the smaller size!

i actually never brought my laptop, even though a lot of people did! i have an iphone and had an international data plan, so i just did everything i needed to from my phone... if you plan on sending videos or pictures or doing things that take up more data/are laptop specific then you should get an anti-left backpack for sure, but you can probably just skip this if you don’t usually do a lot with a computer anyways!

Hey! I have a question about aid for sas. Do you have to separately apply for need based/merit scholarships or they already given to you after acceptance? If you do have to apply for them, what is an estimate for when you hear back about the aid? I hope this all makes sense and thank you!

hi! you’ll need to apply for that, or basically submit your fafsa documents once you are accepted! then you’ll hear back pretty quickly after that :) also, the only payment you’ll make once you’re accepted into the program is a $1000 down payment to reserve your spot on the voyage, and that’s refundable until super close to the voyage, so you can always back out if you don’t get the aid you need.

and then also along with the fafsa aid you can apply to other need based aid through the alumni scholarships, so there’s a lot of places you can get additional money from!

I just saw an ad about this, the idea sounds CRAZY. What countries did you visit during this? How long do you spend at each country? What classwork is being done in a situation like this??

my voyage went to 11 countries (the netherlands, poland, portugal, spain, croatia, morocco, ghana, brazil, trinidad & tobago, ecuador, and costa rica)!! you spend 3-6 days in each one, and then get back on the ship and do your courses there - you take 4 classes and get a full semester of transferable credits from colorado state university! but any one from any college can do it 👍🏻 if you wanna know more specifically about the classes, i made a video about that a while back that you can check out!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bNO81k4iXb4.html

probably not while you’re abroad, unless you can find your bank in a different country! that’s why it’s always a good idea to bring 2 different cards, and have venmo on your phone just in case, and some extra cash!

My friend and I weren't able to do SAS during undergrad and won't for grad school(probably not for masters either). We saw that SAS had Life-Long Learners and basically made a plan to do it when we're over 30! How'd you like the lifelong learners that you engaged with? :)

they were all super nice, and that’s a fun idea! my favorite part about the life long learners is that they can choose to have “families” on the ship, so you and your friend could be assigned like 5 or so students, and you’ll plan meals with them and basically be like a little support system on the ship! we celebrated some birthdays together, etc., and it was really sweet to have a family group like that :) you’ll also probably have people coming to talk to you whenever you’re in the dining halls, like just sitting down and getting to know you, so that’s super fun too because everyone is always really welcoming/open to eating with anybody.

also you can audit whatever classes you like, you’ll be a part of the staff/life long learner team for the sea olympics, and can go on field programs and everything - you’ll really get the full experience still, just with nicer rooms and access to the ship bar 😂😂

@@jessshorst Thanks for the info! I'm currently a first year grad student after graduating undergrad in May. I'm a peer mentor for freshmen so I'm very used to the mentoring role! That all sounds fun because I'll gain even more knowledge when I'm over 30. The nice rooms are also a plus xD. I love all your informational videos. If I have freshmen mentees that are interested in doing this, I'll recommend your channel!

when you first meet people, ask if they’re planning on doing field programs/are already signed up, or if they are doing independent travel! this is how i found people to travel with in the first country, because a lot of people were signed up for field programs and i wasn’t, so i found other people who weren’t spending money on field programs. as it turns out, a lot of people traveling to “save money” probably won’t be signed up for many field programs because they’re so expensive, so that question is really a good place to start!

you can also straight up ask people about their budget per country, like it’s not that weird of a question on the ship, and then you’ll get an answer right away haha

i did know about 3 post-grads on my voyage, and i bet there were more!!! it’s definitely not the most common thing, but it’s still a great way to travel and see the world :)) you’ll still have to take classes though just so you know!

Hi Jess, is the $1,000 deposit required? Because I couldn't even pay this amount (my currency is the real and it's 5x). Or can I continue the application without it? Even at the risk of not having a room of interest.

Hi! I am 99% sure it is required once you are accepted to reserve your spot on the ship, just so they know that you are actually going to attend the semester that you applied for! You don’t have to pay it when you apply I don’t think, just when you are accepted!

hi! it really depends on if you’re trying to travel cheaply! i think $300 per country is what i usually spent with some traveling, meals, etc., but i definitely spent on the lower side. if you’re going to fly/stay at expensive places instead of hostels, definitely budget more!

and field programs for a one day activity are usually $150-250, but for overnight ones they can be $1500-3000!! i did a few one-day ones, but i couldn’t afford the overnights haha, really expensive imo!

the majority of people that go are 21, but the age range for students is 17-23!

It is weird that they have that much money. But at the same time, the money "they have" is all from their PARENTS not their own finances. Also thirty dollars isn't as bad compared to loaning $100+

super valid, i’m sure a lot of the money came from people’s parents! granted, my parents helped me pay for my trip as well, but i spent all my own money when traveling in the countries
