All of that constructive planning and overlapping dialogue that sounds reasonable and real and serves a greater purpose and then the thing is RIGHT FLIPPING THERE!!! It is such a marvelous moment.
What I love about this movie is the realistic, intelligent albeit divided response to the the threat. Plus the underlying growing comprehension of what the threat really is. This movie was soooooo good.
This movie is among the most unsettling of all time, *still.* The scientists forming a circle around the fallen spacecraft, their later reality of being hunted by a literal monster, and that final warning, the most ominous of all, "WATCH THE SKIES!" These 1950s science fiction films, in their method of approaching the unknown, bring an existential unease to the human soul that has been unmatched since.
watched this as a kid and in later yrs got it on vhs then dvd, whenever a snowstorm came through nyc i would hunker down at night light up some weed and watch this one of a kind classic..
As much as I love the 80s version, the creepiness of the presence immediately as the door is opened is an inspired bit of shock tactics. Brilliant film. And really quite a game changer. Even now.
This was one of my favorite horror/SciFi movies. I bought the DVD years ago. James Arness went from playing "The Thing" to one of the most famous western characters ever. I still watch and enjoy the Gun Smoke episodes.
I remember being little and watching this on VHS with my parents. When the Thing showed up they paused it in shock to realize that it was none other than James Arness
