The colder weather in the UK at the moment has meant that the Fender American Vintage 57 strat Neck has flattened out, and there's not enough relief on it, leading to some fret buzz and low action....Here's the thing, adjusting this is a bit of a pain due to that vintage construction....
Using presets "Eric Clean" and "Eric Lead 35"

Yep. The heel adjustment should have gone the way of the Dodo bird, even on the vintage reissues. It's kinda like trying to scratch your balls with your toes, when there's such an easier obvious solution.

Hi John, just to add on the neck screw threads, if you coat them in beeswax it really helps minimise the impact of unscrewing them over the long term.

For me, there is no other way than to take the neck off. I loosen the stirngs, put a capo on the first fret, remove the neck and adjust it and so on. Stewart-MacDonald has a solution for this if you do not mind permanently modifing your guitar it is called the "Spoke Wheel Truss Rod Nut" and it replaces a regular fender truss rod nut after a bit of routing of course!!!

Couldn't even consider this type of truss rod adjustment. None of mine have it, thankfully. One great thing my friend made for me is a neck length piece of wood, 6 inch high and 1 inch thick. Two movable blocks that slide along the side with felt. One to fit first fret, one with a slot for high frets. Now the important part. A clamp that presses on the back of the neck with a C shaped felted groove to pull up the back of the neck in the middle. Just enough pressure to take pressure off the truss rod. Then, turning the truss rod adjustment is a cinche with no resistance. Slowly release the screw of the clamp and let the neck ease into its new level of relief. I love this thing.

Can you use a dremel to put a circular notch on the scratch plate so you can fit either a right angle screw driver or change the nut to an Allen type.

My FrankenStrat is built from Warmoth parts. Their Strat necks have a clever side-adjust truss rod (the adjustment nut is accessed on the side of the neck in the lower cutaway). I'm surprised other manufacturers haven't implemented this-maybe it's patented. Interestingly, Warmoth a license from Fender to produce Strat-like necks. -Tom PS: I *love* the volume placement on Strats; it's perfect for pinky-on-the-volume-knob swells. On my Yamaha SA1100 (ES335 style) I swapped the pickup switch and the neck pickup volume knob to enable this.

The truss rod adjustment is my main minus point too. I'm not bothered by the 21 fret thing as it's rarely ever an issue. I'm much more likely to need to adjust the truss rod than need to get to fret 22. The volume pot placement for me is ideal, I have no problem with where it is and find it a pain on other guitars when it's a little bit further away
@jakollee
@jakollee Год назад
Agree 100% on the volume knob placement, as I like to be able to do pinky volume knob swells. But every now and then, I do like to have that 22nd fret!

@@jakollee sure about the 22 frets. But then I have other guitars that can do that so it doesn't bother me much

I have a custom shop Strat that has the truss rod adjustment in the headstock. It's not a 'vintage' style reissue. Same color as the guitar you play on the open. I live in the northeast USA and the winters here make all my guitar necks move. Having it on the heel is not practical.
@michaelvarneyLLNL
@michaelvarneyLLNL Год назад
Loosen the strings, capo the 1st fret, and pull the heel plate and pull the neck. Capo the 18-19th frets and you have a way to use the strings as a measure. Make the truss adjustment, put neck back on. Done.

I always remove the mid pickup tone pot and move the volume knob to that hole. Otherwise I constantly involuntarily reduce the volume while playing.

Modern starts adjust at the nut. It’s like reverse wound middle pickup or a 5 way switch. EVERY Strat should do that regardless of it being reissue, new, etc

6:00 Is his statement right? I’ve ordered one piece necks from companies like musikraft with a headstock adjust. I’ve had Fenders too with the headstock adjust and I never saw seams where it would suggest it’s not a one piece maple neck. I could be wrong and feel dumb questioning a well-known builder, but that doesn’t seem right.
@jasonyltan7672
@jasonyltan7672 Год назад
When you have a 22 fret neck with the fretboard overhang - you can’t even take the pickguard or slide it off since the neck pickup will get stuck in the cavity and there’s no leverage to pull the pickguard backwards ☹️
@jessenicholson1777
@jessenicholson1777 Год назад
Exactly what I was going to point out. The fact that you need to remove the neck to remove the pickguard is maddening. Ibanez has a good solution for this on the RG and Jem guitars that have pickguards: the pickguard doesn’t go underneath the neck.
@tiagoramalhais5493
@tiagoramalhais5493 Год назад
It's the issue I have with brand new "vintage" guitars, as much as the original design was inovative, there are plenty of flaws that new builder's do not correct for the sake of pleasing the vintage crowd
@jessenicholson1777
@jessenicholson1777 Год назад
Warmoth has a good solution for this with the Gotoh side adjust truss rod. You do the main adjustment at the heel before you install the neck and then all future adjustments are in the side of the heel.

I put a notch in the Pickguard and wood underneath so a "paint can lid remover tool" can be used to adjust the Truss Rod easily without removing/loosening the neck, strings, or pickguard. I've probably removed the neck from my Strat 30-50 times over the years without stripping the screw holes. YMMV 🤷 I also relocated the Volume knob on my Pickguard so it doesn't get in the way of palm muting.

I definitely like my more modern fender strat. Like you say, it has 22 frets, and the fret rod adjustment is in the headstock. If I owned one like yours, I would rout a small hole in the pickguard

personally what I hate about strats is that the volume control is too close to the pick up, I prefer the One Volume One Tone solution, close but not that close. I also do not like that the bridge has no tone to tame it :) ...thank fully I have "modern" start with truss road "in the right place", not hidden down there. Also 21 frets on one or two guitars is ok. I have another with 22 :)
@pepeowen
@pepeowen Год назад
I can't believe Fender would go down this road again. What's the issue with access at the top? I get that it's not vintage to have a spoke nut hotrod trussrod (which is handy, though), but this? I live in England, I have two Strats and one more modern HH S-style and all of them have one or the other, I have to adjust them about twice a year as you say. The vintage access will put me off a guitar even if I get GAS.

This is one of the many reasons I saved up for so long to get a Gt-11 strat from sweetwater. I don’t understand why fender doesn’t make truss-rod adjustment at the headstock standard? Maybe it’s more expensive, but still that’s not an excuse.
@limpeacock573
@limpeacock573 Год назад
I hate it as well. I have an early 80s Strat that requires a heel adjustment. The only good thing is that the neck is very beefy so it rarely seems to need to be tweaked. I will go with a headstock adjustment whenever I can and will avoid those that don't.

I have and old Fender strat which i played mainly around 30 years ago and i had a bit of problem involuntary turning down the volume on the guitar since its so close to the strings, on the other hand you can do volume swells and be able to pick the string at the same time, with the guitars that im mainly using today (classic flying V style) i have to use hammer-ons for that. That neck adjustment solution which my strat also have is idiotic and should no longer be made, there is guitars like for example Charvels that have adjustment at the heel but they have a cut out and a wheel that you spin instead so there is a better solution if you really want adjustment at the heel.

I was looking forward to try and possibly buy a K-Line, but sticking to this horrible design makes it an absolute no go for me. The changes in humidity are drastic in continental Canada and in Winter I am constantly micro adjusting. I'm a bit shocked that K-Line does it that way... 🤯

New strats do it at the headstock. But yeah if you like trad strats you have to deal with that nonsense. Agreed not exactly great but at least it promotes not trying to adjust it with the strings at full tension (which I have seen some people do).

I have commented in one of your previous videos that this truss rod nut placement is the most s.tu.p.1.d thing ever and RU-vid has sent me a warning LOL. The truss rod adjustment must be done with the guitar tuned up.

Certainly no need to build them like that now - new’ish Fender strats no longer use heel adjustment (‘cept vintage series). And as much as I’d like to buy a K-Line strat, this design flaw has stopped that from happening.

In my climate the neck needs truss adjustments 4-6 times a year. There is no way I would buy a guitar I couldn’t easily adjust the truss rod. There is no need for that aggravation.

Its simple. 1. Loosen the strings (don't remove them) 2. Loosen the four neck screws enough so that you can tilt the neck enough to expose the truss rod screw (only needs a few millimetres) 3. Use a Philips crosshead screw driver and adjust the truss rod, a quarter of a turn usually fixes things 4. Push the neck down into the neck pocket and retighten the 4 screws 5. Retension the strings and tune up All in all it takes 5 mins max - twice a year... its not an issue.
@BenBreard

Yeah the heel adjustment is terrible. My other gripe with strats are when the saddles feel like a cheese grater on my picking hand. I can't stand that. ......and it's also a problem that was solved a long time ago.

I don't know why people buy fender Strats these days. A G&L Legacy is better in every way and the US made ones are probably half the price. Even their Indonesian Tribute versions are great. Same pickups and other hardware as the US ones but a third of the price. Good ones to upgrade also.
