The things I wish I knew before playing College Tennis + Q/A

In every young Tennis players life comes the point where you gotta make a decision, usually when you are about to finish high school. Am I going to turn my hobby and passion for tennis into a job, will I go to University and focus fully on another field, Am I going to stop Tennis or am I going to play College Tennis. There are many options. When I was a Teenager I dreamed of becoming a professional Tennis Player but I didn't really know what it takes and what is required. Through a few lucky coincidences and some help I ended up going to College at the San Diego State University. In hindsight this was one of the best decisions of my life. In the Video I will cover my journey from teenager to college and to the pros. I will talk about what College Tennis is like and what I think is a good option for Young Players. I will look at the topic from different perspectives and hopefully help some of you. To be clear Im not trying to influence anyone in their decision, but I hope you gain some insights through this video in order to be able to make a better decision for yourself. Or if you've been through it all already, you can be a bit nostalgic and relive some of your college experiences through my stories. Enjoy the Video :)

Wow! AMAZING VIDEO! It felt like this video was made for me. I am a sophomore in high school. I want to play pro tennis. But every day I think about whether I should play college or play futures when I finish high school. This really helped me a lot. Thanks man 🙌

Great and wise thoughts! Nobody should forget how competitive tennis is! Same accounts for soccer by the way. Playing young in selection teams at highest level or elite academy, doesn't mean you play later on professional. Sometimes even a bit of luck is necessary as well...

Thank you and yes soccer is played by even more people than tennis so it’s crazy competitive. Basically in every sport it takes a lot to become a professional and yes even a bit of luck or good circumstance

Really good video dude!! Tennis has arguably one of the hardest transition paths from junior to pro - so much uncertainty over what path to choose since there is decent debate over college vs playing on the future tours straightaway. Plus with playing on the futures tours there is so much pressure that a player has to manage - all the costs regarding travel, coaching, accommodation and food, and there's so much pressure to win every match at that future/challenger level so that you can stay afloat financially, the stress is honestly unimaginable unless you have really good financial aid. It is cool however to see players who have successfully made it from the college tennis scene upto the pros - Ben Shelton is a very good case. So glad to have found your channel, will be watching your videos:))

Appreciate it! Got another video on the topic coming this Sunday! It is tough especially if you’re not in Europe where we have club tennis and many tournaments close to each other. College helps to develop and potentially play quicker through the circuit

this was a great video. I am really hoping any junior thinking about attending college in America will listen to you. I think most don’t know there are tons of resources for young players to use and help develop your talents AND you get a degree. Great great video.

Nice video! 2 questions: what utr do you need to get into d1 college? did your academic results play a role for your accaptance? Not that I am really considering going pro but it might be fun studying and playing tennis with a scholarship etc... (i am like 15 year old 9 utr I believe, here is other system so im not sure, I only train twice a week so there is room for more training)

Hi thank you and I’m not an expert on UTR but I’ve gotten the question often so I will answer it in a future video. My academic results were important to get into the school but I believe the academic requirements as a student-athlete at most schools is lower compared to the regular student

There are so many junior Slam Champs who never break the top 200 both men and women, the level is insane like you said Djokovic barely has a junior Slam record he didn't feel it meant anything and money was tight ,Sabalenka went straight to futures skipping junior Slams altogether and served a kind of apprenticeship in the lower levels, there was a Junior boys Slam champ 10 years ago who never won a single atp match before quiting altogether. They all loved tennis and devoted themselves to it, if it was easy there would be a few Federers in every generation. It's like art, alot of us can sketch well but there's only one Picasso.

Yeah the level at the top is very high, not many people go there so it’s not that known in the tennis community how good people can play

Great video ,2 questions tho : 1. Do you think its better to sit down on the bench at the best d1 tennis university or play no.1 at a low ranked d1 tennis university if you want to go pro ? 2.Also D1 colleges obviously look for the best high school tennis players when recruiting, how important would you say academics is when getting recruited to a school ?.In other words ,should high school tennis players focus more on academics or tennis if they plan to play college tennis ?

Hi Jose great questions, 1. It depends, personally I like someone to start low in the lineup or barely out. Then you compete to get in while having better practice partners. But with a great coach you could be number 1 and still develop well. 2.its always great to focus on academics in my opinion. And it can help a lot to get into schools and to receive academic scholarships

If you go to college, you would also need to spend most of your time studying to keep your grades high or else you cannot play if your grades fall below minimum level. ... Maybe better to just go pro.

It takes discipline but I think it’s great you study cause you develop in other areas, which makes you a better Tennis player
