@@GirlBehindTheCounter we also lost Actor John Saxon (1936 - 2020) last year too, he appeared with Daria Nicolodi in Tenebre (1982).

Definitely Argento's most beautiful film and one of the most gorgeous horrors ever made, which helps paper over the lack of any plot logic. A really intelligent and sensitive review good stuff.

I didn't realise what I found so fascinating about the set design, lighting and strange set pieces in this movie until you so intelligently articulated it. It really is a cross between classical imagery and mad 80s fantasy. I personally love the labyrinthine plot this movie has :D its like every weird image and piece of info given in riddle is a clue to a mystery the movie doesn't really care to solve. I find it interesting how none of the characters are given any agency in the story, things just HAPPEN to them. The actor who played the main moustache man said he was told to act completely vacant as if he was walking through a dream

Sorry for the late reply. Yeah I just adore Argento's set design. He really knows how to set a scene. Also I think that's phrase to describe the plot "riddle is a clue to a mystery the movie doesn't really care to solve" ! Things just sort of happen to these characters without rhyme or reason and it just works surprisingly well with the cool set design. :)

If you love the set design on this movie, it's not 80s, it's actually Mario Bava. Watch Kill Baby Kill (1966) or Black Sunday (1962). Argento was sick during filming so Mario Bava was brought in. He's the madman with the lighting design ideas. Kill Baby Kill will have a green lighted window and red lighted table with blue lit curtains in the same frame. The backgrounds will be so blue that they turn monochomatic. Bava is uncredited but he co-directed it did some of the cinematography and supervised the set design. Of course Argento had it edited his way with soundtrack his way. Bava would've been Argento's hero in some way I think. Argento was /is awesome. I don't mean to detract from his merits.

The pool scene is awesome! I allways thought that was one of the best evocations of Alice's rabbit hole.

This film is like a moving painting. It was made to get lost in it's beauty and to mesmerize the viewer and bring constant feelings of uneasiness. Just like being stuck in a nightmare. There is just enough plot to keep the viewer interested and intrigued but it's not the point of the movie. The point is how it makes you feel.

Exactly I feel that Inferno is like being stuck in a dream rather then a more literal film, a bit like Susperia. Then when it comes to Mother of Darkness I don't know what happened LOL

I don't know if it was mentioned (probably, but there's so many comments I'm still navigating), but the witch in the classroom was Mater Lachrymarum. I think if Argento really wanted to go out with a bang on this trilogy, this one should have focused on her and saved Mater Tenebrarum for last (would be a different actor, but it would have been easier to cast than what we got.)

Also this was the last film Mario Bava worked on. He did the visual effects, for example the moon eclipse in Central Park, the appearance of Mother of Darkness as Death and the burning of the building.

A better word for Mater Lachrymarum's look might be Classic (as in Classical) rather than old-fashioned.

I think if Argento had made Mother Of Tears right after Inferno instead of Tenebrae, the movie would had been much better and cerrainly would retain the amazing visudls that Argfnto was employing in his movie st that time. He would had alfo used the utterly gorgesus actress that played Mater Lacrymatum in Inferno, as she does show up in Tenebrae.

Great review I agree with you about the visuals are boss the story is nonsense Suspira seemed to have more of a plot I'm a fan of style over substance but some that's that just gets lame

This film, talking about the plot and characters development, is an absolute disaster, the most shocking moments come from stupid accidents and you don't know who's actually the leading character because there are a lot and they never do nothing coherent. But visually and aesthetically, is really powerful, a hellish nightmare, an oniric experience full of intense colors that catch you and never let you free. I didn't like also the animal abuse of Argento...

This movie is TRASH. nothing about this movie makes sense. And Nothing is explained. It builds upon the 3 mother's mystery, but who are the people running around killing everyone and why? It left me feeling beyond disappointed for wasting time to sit throughout this. The pacing is so bad, with plenty of pointless scenes

Yep...accurate I could not remember these characters names or personalities at all. You definately shouldn't go into this film looking for a plot there isn't one. Why is anyone being killed....not sure. What's the backstory of the mother of darkness...not explained But if you're looking for something to just chill out to, look at the visuals, and get captured into this manic world....Inferno does the trick. But yeah I totally get you valid criticism. :)

Also if you're looking for some real nonsense in this series...Mother of Tears is going to drive you CRAZY ! That movie really makes no sense. But it's brilliant.

@@GirlBehindTheCounter well, i respect some people just enjoy the ride. However, I prefer my entertainment with a hint of purpose. Something to resonate. Art should stir your imagination, that possibly inspires you to write your own story. Never seen Halloween, nor freddy. I need no senselessness because we get that in spades in real life. I think you're missing part of the human experience if you watch movies according to your criteria. Dario Argento is autistic. His movies contain something about he autistic experience. You can't get this in ver y many other movies or filmmakers. There's an intelligence that is hidden from people that don't understand his works. Other autistic filmmakers: Tim Burton, Stanley Kubrick and most likely David Lynch. Dario Argento writes his best movies and his focus is different from what you're used to. You can dismiss it as intellectually inferior or you can try to understand its appeal. I don't ean to cast shade on you about dismissing autistic vision! I just mean... open your mind.
