One time, while I was hosting at Cracker Barrel, I was sharing with a guest about Niagra Falls (as he went there too) and he immediately went: "NIAGRA FALLS! Slowly I turned....." I joined him for the gag. He made my work night awesome!
on the subject of work we had a man at our old folks home that every time someone mentioned wasting water he'd talk about his work at a sewerage wastewater plant. lol
@@joycegossom3569 Yeah, it's been 20 years and my dad and I still sit down to watch it together. I bought the full 17-dvd collection and we're halfway through it now, hahaha
Makes me feel bittersweet that the rest of the Stooges never got much of a chance to do solo stuff. Moe Howard doing character acting stuff like that brief outburst here is an interesting premise to ponder.
I remember seeing this 3 Stooges episode on TV when I was a kid, and that "NIAGARA FALLS!" gag has stuck in my head ever since. Thanks for posting this!
I never missed a morning watching the Stooges. This stuck in my head more than any other bit. So silly but I thought they were the best comedians in the entire world.
That's right. But they're trigger word is "Martha". Oops, please don't go. Step by step, inch by inch. I beat..... Sorry about that. Either "Martha" or Niagara Falls. If someone says or typed it down. I will go what Moe did to Curly. The same thing with Lucy in I Love Lucy. Another thing, 2 of my sisters, adoptive sister and I were named after The Three Stooges. Not kidding.
Xian’s divided on this. There is a thing about this in the Talmud. Someone meets some men in heaven, and asks what they are doing there. They say, “We are merry-makers. When we see one who is depressed, we cheer him up.”
I’ve seen Lucy do it, and it was performed on Abbott and Costello’s tv show, but they used The Susquehanna Hat Company as the trigger. I’m sure many others have done it, also.
Anybody notice Larry mess up at the end? He says inch by inch, and then quietly says to himself step by step, and then resumes saying inch by inch a second time where he was supposed to.
I have a photo of them when they appeared at the Stanley Theater in Jersey City NJ. Also with Joe DeRita. I worked there and found the photo in the office.
Movies, comedy, musicals... an oasis from the pain of a difficult childhood. I owe laughter and hope to men like these fellows. I still belly laugh and escape into a wonderful world, free for a bit, elevated somehow. Thanks a billion, live forever.
Every afternoon I looked forward to the 3 Stooges. Just as I had Captain Kangaroo when I was younger. They indeed were an oasis from a brutal father. Still love them. My one daughter was in a college class when her professor started singing "Swinging the Alphabet". My daughter of course chimed in and was the only student to do so. Her prof told her she had a good childhood :)
They may be gone but not forgotten they brought laughter for generations here we are laughing hysterically the howards and fine family would be proud and laughing no one close to the 3 stooges your legacy of laughter still continues on you made my weekend keep the laughs coming appreciate you guys ! Joe
I remember this episode it was so freaking hilarious how Moe and Larry kept going at Curly whenever they heard the words 'Niagra Falls' and I remember how at the end of the episode they did it again only with a car.
Fun Fact: This sketch was filmed for the movie "Good Luck, Mr. Yates" from i think 1943. The scene was deleted, but Jules White wanted to use the material so he created this short.
I was working at a casino a few years ago. One of the other techs was talking about some kind of trip and she outright mentioned Niagara Falls, and without skipping a beat I went into the bit, yelling and everything. Everyone in the shop was _dying_ from the routine.
Thanks for posting this- I remember it from the 70s when I was a kid. Interesting to see them in semi-stooge/vaudeville-roots mode. They would have been awesome cast in a Shakespeare play.
1972 Suburban Boston in the winters , Stooges every day on Channel 38. When the weather was nice, we were outside. Winter was 3 or 4 friends over and a black and white POS TV in the den.
I miss these guys. Fond memories for sure growing up. They were reruns in the 70s, but they still entertained my generation. Pure entaintanment with the likes of The Little Rascles, George Burns and Gracie Allen, I love Lucy, etc... classics.
1 am and I'm cracking up! I looked this up because my 13 y/o granddaughter was talking about Niagra Falls, so of course I reenacted the skit....she didn't think I was funny. Good times!
Here is a good poem by Curly Howard, a member of The Three Stooges "Little fly upon the wall, Ain't ya got no clothes at all? Ain't ya got no shimmy shirt? Ain't ya got no petti-skirt? Boo, fly, ain't ya cold?"
My granddad use to creep up on us in the kitchen and say “slowly I turn step by step” while gripping our shoulders. He would of been at least 98 yrs old by now. Army WWII Vet and tobacco & pig farmer.
The Stooges were great. I probably saw every one of their videos. Looking at this one, those punches by Moe and then Larry looked very close to Curley's face. The expressions on the band members is priceless!
I was raised on this bit and it’s just second nature to go into the “slowly I turned” bit whenever anyone says niagra falls around me. Barely anyone ever knows what I’m talking about and it kind of makes me sad when I have to explain myself.
It works, even so. The sketch is about how there are more marginally crazy people walking around than you would think, and your random performance would give that vibe.
I remember when I was a child watching this program on DVD with my grandfather and the laughter that this chapter gave us, he laughed so much as if he were a child again who saw the three stoonges for the first time... I miss you so much grandpa
theres nothing like this on tv anymore. im 33. ive been called an old soul. three stooges, chaplin, buster keaton, laurel and hardy, abbott and costello are the shit
I never liked Abbott and Costello as a kid. Never saw the TV show, just a few of the movies. Now that the T.V. show in on youtube, the show is hilarious.
reminds me of this fellow at a senior residence i worked at. but HIS ''niagra falls'' was ''waste water.'' everytime we talked about wasting water he's mention the sewerage plant he worked at and would take out his business card and say ''I'm retired but so-and-so'' still works there. he''ll be able to help with your issue.'' lol RIP Gerry
This definitely ranks up there with some of the greats. Along with: Abbott and Costello's Who's on first Groucho Marx's mirror act Lucy and the chocolates.
When I was a kid, the family channel used to have a three hour block at night. I used to watch it all the time. My brothers got me the vhs volumes of the three stooges.
NIAGARA FALLS, slowly I turned, and step by step, inch by inch. I smacked him, I bopped him, I hit him, I bashed him, I beat him and I knocked him down!!
Well you know you're getting older when... Yesterday I was on my way to the restroom at work when one of our younger workers was talking with a student intern. As I passed she mentioned "Niagara Falls" as a place for she and her boyfriend to go visit. I was SO tempted to break into The Three Stooges bit, but kept myself in check. Whilst in the restroom I had the somewhat sad thought that if I HAD gone into the bit, they would have both probably thought me totally mad, as I would be amazed if either of them is even aware of it, though it was something I grew up with.
When I was little we went to Niagara Falls on vacation. The whole drive up there we kept saying "Niagara Falls Slowly I turned Step by step Inch by inch" over and over. I didn't know what it was but I thought it was the funniest thing ever.
