David Whitmer relates his account of seeing the gold plates with Martin Harris and Oliver Cowdery. This video also depicts how the three men remained true to their testimonies.
Thanks for uploading. I'm not a member of the LDS but my understanding of David Whitmer's position was that he did indeed remain true to his assertion that he witnessed the plates and the angel. However he left the church because he disagreed with the development of Joseph Smith's doctrine such as that of the plurality of gods and polygamy. Whitmer said that these doctrines were completely inconsistent with the original book of Mormon of 1830 and that he remained a believer in the doctrine of one triune God the Father Son and Holy Ghost. In short he regarded Joseph Smith as a fallen prophet.
A few verses had to be changed in the book of Mormon from 1830 to the 1837 edition. One example is in first Nephi chapter 11, and the another in first Nephi chapter 13. They both referred to God & Jesus as one being, or Mary being the mother of God, the eternal father, obviously these things need to be corrected in order to align with the final version of the first vision released in 1838 and eventually published in 1842.
@@DaveSommers11Do you have an 1830 at least replica? I do. The "changes" are inconsequential. Buy one from digital legends and compare them for yourself!
Lovely to see this film again. Loved it when l first saw it in 1976 when l first joined the Church. Still love the message of it and how it is portrayed.
What's that worth? I testify otherwise, as do many more than the 13,000,000 Mormons of the world. By the way, the last payment on that bridge is due...
This is what Joseph said to Martin Harris. "I the Lord command him, my servant Martin Harris that he shall say no more unto them concerning these things except he shall say, I have seen them and they have been shown unto me by the power of God: And these are the words which he shall say. But if he deny this he will break the covenant which he has covenanted with me, and behold he is condemned." I'm not surprised that they didn't put this in the film. It's saying "Just say that you were shown them by the power of god and don't elaborate, or you'll be damned".. Its not something you'd need to say to someone unless you have something to hide.
This brings back memories of Sunday School. The TV on the big stand our teacher wheeled into the room and got the VCR hooked up. Dad checking these out of the ward library to watch at home for Family Home Evening. Three incredible men who were witnesses to one of the greatest miracles of our time. The coming forth of the Book of Mormon. Another Testament of Jesus Christ. Then there were 8 more witnesses of the Golden Plates.
Bryce Chamberlain was my religion instructor at BYU in 1980 or 1979 after looking at us, his gaze was long, as if he were looking at prophecy fulfilled, these Children of Lehi in the latter days sitting in his class room, he couldn't get his words out,, all he could say to his Lamanite students were "bright eyed and bushy tailed." We all laughed because his eyes, brow, sharp square jaw were quite different from his joyful playful mood. Brother Chamberlain told us about a movie he was in, the title, and what the movie was about. The three witnesses. He bore his testimony of the divinity of the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith. Now after 40 years Brother Chamberlain's testimony rings true again. I love the testimony of the three witnesses & the testimony of the twelve men who saw, hefted, the gold plates. Its truth.
This film is a bit misleading. When asked why David left the church in this film he gave a very vague answer. You all should read the real testimony written by David Whitmer. It tells a very different story. It is true he never denied the validity of the Book of Mormon but what he has to say about Joseph Smith is not very flattering for Joseph.
This film miss-represents what David Whitmer said at the end of his life. Yes he did believe in the Book of Mormon, but he also believed that Joseph was a fallen prophet, and did not believe in the Doctrine and Covenants. His complete pamphlet "An Address to All Believers in Christ by a Witness to the Divine Authenticity of the Book of Mormon" should be read by all members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Haters and persecutions are increase but the truth is always being truth. People make mistakes and change many times but God never change not even one because he is the God of love and justice. Book of Mormon is true. Joseph Smith is a true prophet of God and Jesus is the Christ the son of the living God.
@@MM-st6vu Unfortunately the new movie inaccurately shows the translation by the seer stone in a hat rather than the Urim & Thummim as testified by Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery. Stick with this 1969 movie, it is much more historically accurate.
Cool video. I really enjoyed it I really appreciated the testimonies of the three all the way to their dying breathes. BTW It's Nice. I'm Lucky number 777.
David Whitmer claimed to his dying day that he saw the golden plates, but he said that he and the other two witnesses saw the plates with their "spiritual eyes" and not physical "physical eyes". I wonder what a judge would say about a witness who swore he saw the crime with his "spiritual eyes"?
"Of course we saw them with our natural eyes, but they had been prepared. One can't behold the glory of an angel without being first prepared. But they were our natural eyes." Whitmer clarifies this and more if you'll look for the references. Dan Vogel and others omit this kind of evidence in their naratives.
You are confusing David Whitmer with Martin Harris. David Whitmer repeatedly said that he saw the plates with his "natural eyes." He was adamant about it.
"Gentlemen, do you see that hand? Are you sure you see it? Or are your eyes playing you a trick or something? No. Well, as sure as you see my hand so sure did I see the Angel and the plates." -- Martin Harris
"My eyes saw, my ears heard, and my understanding was touched, and I know whereof I testified is true. It was no dream, no vain imagination of the mind - it was real" -- Oliver Cowdery
There's a great book by an LDS author that shows that there's perfect harmony between the prophetic statements concerning the garden of Eden being in Missouri and the Old Testament account. It's called Canaan, Babylon, and Egypt A Comparative Theological Analysis on Creation sold by Eborn Books. Great read. Thumbs up! 👍
I read about the Three Witnesses as a boy. The young attorney in me believed the evidence. The old attorney in me now knows the evidence and their words are true.
I think you miss the point of the video, that being, the Three Witnesses never denied seeing the plates. Speaking of David Whitmer, here's a good research paper... josephsmithfoundation.org/papers/an-analysis-of-statements-by-david-whitmer-on-translation-of-the-book-of-mormon/
@@DBrentWalton I agree that they never denied seeing the plate's. My point is that David Whitmer later believed Joseph was a fallen prophet. David left the church and never returned. This film is misleading.
@@DBrentWalton You are correct the film didn't say he returned to the church. The film did little to help us understand why he never returned. In the film the question was asked why he left and the character playing David gave a very vague answer. What we do know is David Whitmer believed Joseph had gone astray and the answer in the film does not tell us this.
how long did it take you to come up with that? that "fictional" narrative cured me of a 16 year deeply entrenched meth addiction by doing what it told me to do. if it is fictional, then its the best fiction on Earth.
OR you can without MOCKERY actually ESTABLISH that beyond your PERSONAL HOPES it's either FACTUALKY TRUE and he SAWCwhat he SAYS he SAW or YOU have PROOF that he DIDN'T.
This is the story of how Grandpa Joe ended up in bed for 25 years BEFORE Charlie discovered the golden ticket. Remember how excited he got when he heard “Golden”, he jumped up out of bed and danced across the room. It was the only thing that motivated him to get out of that bed.
Why don't you tell the rest of the Oliver Cowdery story? Tell how he was excommunicated for speaking out against Joseph's affair with a teenage girl named Fanny Alger. Funny, 'official' Mormon history never mentions that, does it?
Perhaps you would like to read the book "Saints". It is mentioned there in detail. Joseph Smith did marry Fanny Alger as a second wife by commandment of the Lord (and I might point out that it was not unusual at the time for teenage girls to marry). This was a commandment Joseph obeyed very reluctantly as he loved Emma Smith with all he had. It is true that the doctrine of plural marriage was introduced to the saints and that many if not all struggled with the doctrine at first. And yes many like Oliver Cowdrey could not understand or accept it and eventually left the church. But this was not the first time God had commanded a man to take another wife. Even the great Patriarchs like Abraham and Jacob were commanded or allowed to have more than one wife yet they remain uncomdemned. Joseph Smith had asked the Lord about the Patriarchs and their wives and that was when the Lord began commanding him to follow their example. Plural marriage is not a principal all need to follow, only those that have been commanded by the Lord for a specific purpose.
Nah, that's not the reason Oliver was excommunicated. The actual reason why he, David Whitmer and a few others from the church leadership in Missouri were disfellowshipped was that they mishandled church funds and used them to buy consecrated properties in Far West. Oliver Cowdery then moved to Tiffin, Ohio and was pressured by his peers of the Lawyers' Guild to repudiate his "Mormon past." Especially true when he run for State Representative for Ohio, election that he lost by 40 votes. He ultimately didn't repudiate it, and ended up rejoining and being rebaptized in the church and passed in good standing. As for the accusation about Fanny Alger, Joseph never denied the claim, but insisted it was not adulterous.
@@wiremuwiniata1216 Adequate recommendation. Volume 1 treats about the excommunication of Oliver Cowdery and David Whitmer to a considerable comprehension.
It's almost laughable that your bring up Fanny Alger. It shows you haven't done much research, or understand the rules of hearsay. The documentary record of the relationship between Joseph Smith and Alger is fragmentary and contradictory. And, when one studies Joseph's letters (ones he actually wrote) and those of Emma Smith (his wife), there's absolutely no indication of extramarrital activies and completely uncharacteristic of his adult life. Joseph Smith, Jr. was "sealed" to many women, but there is absolutely no record or accounts of his ever having consumated any of those relationships.
Why isn't Joseph sticking his face in a hat with the stone or glasses in them at 10:30 like every written account says he did? In fact, why does he have the plates out at all? They were typically hidden somewhere else, completely out of sight... This is about as historically accurate as the Disney "Pocahontas" cartoon.
As I say above, listen to the verse he is reading. It is from the last chapter. The historical record states that by the time he finished the translation he no longer needed the stone.
@@playerpage or the plates. He never looked upon the plates. They often weren't in the same room or even the same building, according to the closest accounts. Some have them hidden in the woods while Joseph was dictating. Learn your history
@@Man-jf6lz learn your history. You claim that he never looked on the plates and that is demonstrably false. He read from the plates at the beginning of the translation process.
Were watching this with a recent convert friend who likes movies from this period. Disappointing that there is an ad at about the 2:20 mark...in a church video(?). Please remove it. Thanks.
Yes, all three left the church for a time. Martin Harris and Oliver Cowdery later rejoined the Church. Only David Whitmer didn't rejoin. However he never denied what he had testified of seeing.
Well, we know that Cowdery went from #2 in the church to being excommunicated because he took offense at Joe's affair with the teenage girl, Fanny Alger. (It seems Oliver had some sense of decency.)
Actually, I'm not sure but I think the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints has the seerstone in Salt Lake City. Does anyone know? They now admit it was used in translating. It's the gold plates and Urim and Thummin with breastplate, and maybe a sword (I'm not sure if there was a sword) that are gone.
Religion poisons everything it touches. They are cults that claim truth without any empirical proof. Stop pretending and believe in reality it is all we have.
@ce collie Bullshit. You are a classic victim of gasslighting. Every church document up to the 90s, at least, has pictured Joe intently staring at the plates.
Was the scene in the courthouse when Oliver Cowdery as prosecutor was challenged as to his own character authentic or from the scriptwriters' imagination? It certainly seems irrelevant to the trial taking place. Nice piece of drama, though. More importantly, from historical accounts Martin Harris seems to have been already given to supernatural experiences, but it is impossible, I think, to tell whether David W, Oliver Cowdery and Joseph Smith were fraudsters, deluded or (which I doubt) witnesses to a supernatural event. A lawyer character in the film, remarking on there being not one but three witnesses, then says one witness in a court of law is enough, but what he didn't add that the credibility of witnesses counts for a lot. Three witnesses whom the jury didn't believe and the case would be lost.
And might I add that these men, though they had faults like many others, were seen as men of great integrity. David Whitmer is a great example of this for as we have seen (and you will find these documents as evidence) he was a man well respected in the community for his integrity.

I'm sorry, zbesrtman1, but the movie is correct . This is exactly how Joseph Smith described how he translated The Book of Mormon, I will be glad to give references.
Remember kids, just because the church sponsored a movie of Joseph translating the plates without the seer stone (a situation that pretty much never happened) and no covering doesn't mean they haven't always been 100% transparent about church history
