Can you do a video on punting into the wind? I feel that the typical “solid technique will beat the wind over powering through the punt” only goes so far.. any tips on a more consistent drop with the wind going head onto you, all while having to save the punt with the wind pushing the nose of the ball in all sorts of directions? I appreciate the content. Great channel right here.
I've heard from coaches that Bad punt drill #2 is a good drill because it improves footwork and timing the drop of the football. It's done on a track because you can follow a line. Your kicking foot should stay linear on the line while the drop falls on the line. I thought it develops muscle memory of combining footwork (walking in a straight line) while timing the drop, but you disagree... How does your version of the drill help with timing the drop? I thought timing the drop has to be taught with footwork.
Jamal Crumpton great question. I would answer like this. Your footwork should mimic what a good punt should look like, correct? So therefore, doing repetitive footwork where when you plant you are essentially rolling and bending forward to pick up a ball isn’t patterning good habits. Also, I would venture to say doing it down a line is good for beginners for sure. However, my version is one where you can use a line but also then teach yourself to drop as plant foot is hitting ground or right before it but then train it to be strong as a foundation underneath you so when you take it to a real punt you’re ready to push off an explode
You're correct that doing drops on the track will give you a line to follow, and also bounce the ball more which will help you see how you dropped the ball based on how it bounces. But on the flip side, you want to practice good body position every time you do any drill, you want your steps and rhythm to be as close to a full punt as possible to build that muscle memory. Often when punters do drops on the track they just end up playing catch with themselves, having a bad body position, dropping it incorrectly to get the ball to bounce back up to them and taking unrealistic steps. If you go to 3:21 you can see he's not advocating against doing drops, just that if you're going to do them it's best to be deliberate about it.
