This is the video of us entering the thames at brentford, a trip i know lots of boaters are sceared to do, so I figured I would film it so y'all can see its not so bad!
We had some drama with the lock keeper at the Thames Lock Brentford, as we had booked and where asked to be there at 7:30AM only for the lock keeper not to show up untill 8:40! but we did make it out onto the thames, even if it was high tide!
we passed a few islands from the book and maybe on the way back if we have time i can do a loop around them!
hope you all enjoy this very very long video!
also thank you to Maia music in this maiatheband

Excellent video. A bucket wish list got fed in 2017 as we did the Thames from Kingston Upon Thames to Oxford over 12 days on the Wessex Rose (WR) and a canal nut was born. She is not exactly a do it yourself hire boat but when there was work to be done I was there. In 2018 we did Pewsey to Bristol on the K &A and lots more work which I live for. What history to work and live in. In 12 days we will once again board the WR at Stoke Bruerne on the Grand Union for a 14 day cruise and will make this journey from Brentford to Teddington a 14 ending in Kingston Upon Thames. This therefore was most educational and only serves to stoke the fire. Next year we shall finish the K & A from Pewsey to Reading before finishing in Windsor. Thanks for sharing. Loved it.

@4.40, it's a floating dry dock. it partially sinks, the boat is moved over it. then it's re-floated, lifting the boat out of the water.

Two Ropes: So, at Teddington and up to the sourse beyond St Johns we ask for two ropes because of the variety in the river users and in the locks. On the canals you'll have predominantly narrowboats in locks built just wide enough for the boat. So a 6'10" wide boat in a 7'6" wide lock. Whereas on the Thames we see vessels between 3" and 20' wide and from 6' to 120' long. We treat everyone the same and work to the lowest denominator. The locks also vary widely around 120' long to 600'. 16' wide to 23' and with a depth between 2'6" and 9'. Some fill from the gates, others from the bottom and some do both at the same time. Hope that helps ;)

Love all the Georgian architecture on the left just after the bridge where the tour boat lowered it’s funnels to pass under. The cheap islands are probably submerged a lot of the time. ‘Steering’ not driving. Love the music - so peaceful and appropriate.

Great vid Jasmine... brings back memories of being brought up on the banks of the Thames. My dad was a boatman for a rowing club in Chiswick and we’d sometimes take the coaching launch up River. Very cool video. I don't own a boat or stay in London. Actually I stay in Scotland. I've watched a bunch of London canal trips now . This one is the best. If I ever find myself in an end of the world Zombie situation and get trapped in London. I now feel confident enough to leave the confined streets of the city and find safety on the waters of the Thames. Many thanks. I'll raise a beer to you if that situation ever occurs. Good luck .

@lth1072
@lth1072 5 лет назад
@@ThisNarrowboatAdventure it's very nice in places. The North is very nice up near Fort William and Glencoe . That's excellent for scenic mountainous adventures. The best bits for canal boats would be to visit central Scotland. The Falkirk Wheel is one of the most visited attractions in Europe. It's a canal bridge that connects Edinburgh ( The Union canal ) and Glasgow ( Forth and Clyde canal ) . If you search on RU-vid. London Boat Girl made 3 excellent videos about Scotland's canals :-) . If you are in central Scotland. I'd recommend visiting the Island of Arran. It's a short ferry ride from a town called Ardrossan. Arran has been described as Scotland in miniature. It's stunning.

Thanks for this video especially as it covered a stretch of the Thames I knew well from my youth. It was nice to see how much had changed and even more how much hadn't. I think your commentary on Eel Pie Island was a bit under done. It was in the 1960s one of the hotest venues in London. Just about anyone who wanted to be someone went to the Island and performing groups included the Rolling Stone, Bowie, The Who, Status Quo (I think but I wasn't really all there that evening) and many, many more. It was also the best pick up venue I have ever known. If a boy or girl couldn't pull at Eel Pie Island they would never pull anywhere.

Where the boat is up on the dry dock. The dry dock can be ballasted down with water,in the bottom tanks, the boat goes in, is centered over pre-set blocking. The water is pumped out of the ballast tanks, and you have a boat high and dry to work on. Cheers Carl

I notice you always hug the inside of the turns on the river. Being a river boater myself I can tell you that is the shallowest part and many boats run aground that way and have to wait for the next tide to get underway again. That is if they were lucky enough not to have run aground at dead high tide.

Somewhere along the Thames near here (?) on the left (N) side, a family built a house right on an island in the river where it often flooded so the design was like a concrete tub inside another sunken one. You can find the video on Great Designs on RU-vid. The concept was that as the river rose into flood stage the house rose accordingly because it floated . Trouble was that when completed they discovered that it would not stay completely level due to the extra weight of their possessions and furnishings... duhhhh.. so they had to add weight in the exact location which would balance it. iAlso the stupid contractor’s ‘barge’ used to get machinery onto the island tipped over and the JCV submerged.all the materials had to be brought to the island by barge. The owners also had to battle with neighbors who wanted nothing to change and reveal their outdated homes. More money than sense although the end result was pleasing. NB They aren’t summer houses, they are BOAT HOUSES.
@ThisNarrowboatAdventure
@ThisNarrowboatAdventure 5 лет назад
there are actually a good amount of houses on islands that will float if their island floods its a very good ideal if you live on an island

Many narrowboaters get caught out because tidal information is in Universal time this is 1hour later than BST. In other words, high water was an hour later than you thought.

well the reason we where annoyed is because when we called the lock keeper to book they asked us to come at 7:30 am then no one showed up untill 8:40. we didnt plan the time they did.

Grenwhich Mean Time is one hour behind British Summer Time. 06:00hrs GMT would be 07:00hrs BST. Remember, spring forward, fall (autumn) back. Sorry to be pedantic but I was trained as a military clerk and we would use GMT (Zulu time) on exercises even in summer. This could could cause confusion when a civilian asked us for the time😂

Loads of narrowboats go from limehouse to Brentford and teddington. It's choppy but as long as your engine vents are high enough above the waterline it's fine. I've been from Brentford to limehouse a few times but going that way really isn't for the feinthearted because the turn into limehouse isn't easy

Very tranquil footage. I would have preferred that you talked more about the passing scenery, kept a map handy instead of a cell-phone... there's a lot of history, also interesting aspects of the bridges etc, Richmond Half-Tide lock, Pope's Grotto etc. Far more interesting than listening to the music; (note to people making videos/setting up answer machines. any music you choose is guaranteed to be irritating to 80% of the listeners). The' Summer Houses' you refer to are in fact boat houses that have been refurbished.. We had many great parties in ours... days of long ago.

Nice relaxing video to watch, I assume all the aircraft In the video were heading Into Heathrow, you can see them fly past as soon as you entered the Thames, Cheers from Vancouver :)

Lovely video Jasmin, thanks for sharing, was wondering if any expert Thames boaters here because i thought Richmond to Teddington is only tidal when Richmond lock sill is down (-1+1 HW Richmond) then the wall is raised and the lock is used -2+2 HW with 8 pound fee. So when the sill is raised Richmond to Teddington becomes non tidal.. If going upstream at an average speed of 4-5KT i suggest you leave 45 minutes before HW of your current location and not destination, then you will just ride the tide all the way up.

36:34 No you're wrong, the one next to the moored boat is their home, the one in the background is the summer house lol. 37:40 Ohh my God you need to have super eyesight to see that one during the day! The red light is as tiny as traffic lights from a distance!

a friend of mine recently did this. and her boat is 4? feet long, and only has a beta 20 HP engine! if you know someone experienced, take them with you as my friend did. (she took the deputy editor of canal boat magazine!).

The river was calm .. but the sky was definitely busy. I saw like 3 planes flying across before you even finish one paragraph! Which airport is that? Great video by the way, didn't realize it was a long as I followed right through the end.

The Thames above Richmond bridge neve dries out,as there is a half tide lock inorder that Teddington locks can work 24/7

Interesting journey...loved the video! I have a question. by watching other narrowboaters, I understood that boaters are required to wear flotation gear on the tidal Thames. Is that not correct? In any event...very interesting and enjoyed it.

beautiful - a very relaxing ride - thank you! a few years ago we watched a couple of boats go through the Brentford lock and ran through the park to the end to see how they made it onto the river! spent a while trying to see what the huge crane was lifting, then realised it was a smudge on my screen.... and seeing all those boats facing you was amazing - those towns look so different from this angle
