When you think about the pants, they protect the lower parts from the elements, such as mud, dirt, sand, brush, etc. that would get in the gaps of the legs and joints on a realistic level.
I hate you for one reason: You make me want to start doing this stuff again. I was spreading myself too thin with all my creative outlets and had to cut things out. But now I'm wondering how far I could take sculpting if I really applied myself, but then I'd have to drop something else. SO HERE'S THE SOLUTION: I'll follow you and I'll live vicariously through your stuff. And I'll learn along the way and if I ever decide to jump back in I'll be more betterer prepared, and very more wiserer. So I don't hate you at all, actually.
I started scultping a few years ago as a hobby, then kid1 arrived and time was lacking. I did few things but sqtopped for a long time. I keep adding things to a "todo one day" list. Now I'm am more pumped up than ever to do sculpting, and this project is awesome... so of course, I'm expecting the second kid in a few days (silly me) I have a stock of cosclay from the kickstarter that is waiting on the side, and that I only used to sculpt capes and things onto warhammer figs (something else I decided to start 15years after stopping, and that will go on the side too for a long time :D)
Thanks! Kitbashing would be lots of fun, but I would need to buy *a lot* of kits in order to get any sort of bashing out. Easier to just make the pieces I need. 'Easier'...
@@NorthoftheBorder I mean if you wanted to go the kitbashing route. You could simplify the process by just buying a Gundam like the mobile Haro. Then buying a Tie fighter of a similar size.
It's so interesting when he's making the steps, because at each step of painting/detailing/weathering, I keep thinking, "Wow, that's good. That's super realistic. He can stop here-" and then he keeps adding more and making it look even better!
Im just gonna say it: the pants drive me nuts xD I would have given him Mech-legs. Maybe similar to AT-ST.... Nonetheless, cool stuff man. Who else is getting Ronin-Titan vibes (Tone ftw)?
Yeah it does look like a starwars ronin or tone type character. Mainly because of the sword and how the main body is just a square (circle in this case) with the thin arms and legs. And tone does have that circular window. I personally like the pants btw.
@@lennonp.3469 Ronin sucks, I use Tone :p Ronin is for noobs. You swoosh around and run over players, you block everything with your sword. Love it when those people act like its THE top notch pro titan. Its not.
The pants could be there to hide all the cabling. And because they're probably makeshift there are probably exposed ball-bearings etc. so it could be there to protect those from dirt and sand
i have always wanted to try sculpting, but after looking at the clay and the tools i don't even know how to begin. it's great watching you work because i learn how to effectively use the tools and what they're for. thank you so much!

The fact you can make all these amazing sculptures while having such a tight schedule/time limit on when they need to be finished by while also having a life is just baffling to me. I love your vids man keep up the good work!
The pants aren't that odd if you think about it. If you can't rely on a staff dedicated to the cleaning of your mech on a regular basis, then protecting it with something that doesn't hinder his movements can be handy. Plus, it kind of humanizing the mech and give him a lonely cyberpunk ronin vibe.
Honestly I had no idea this was a tutorial until I fully read the title. I just watch these videos because it’s sort of mesmerizing how he makes this cool sculptures and artwork.
I am not familiar with the original artist, but I love everything about this and your craftsmanship is exquisite. Star Wars with a touch of Ancient Japan and also Titanfall 2.

Right on! When it comes to metallics and sculpting armors, the pasta machine is king for uniform thickness and straight lines. Also, for mechs, just put wires and tubes everywhere. Instant ruhbut
As a seasoned Temari embroiderer, there are actually ways to find the poles, equator and other points on a sphere with nothing but a strip of paper and a few sewing pins.
A number of people have asked how often I bake (heh heh heh), so I've been trying to be more vocal--the easiest answer is "whenever I feel like something is done". I'm rarely upset that I baked something, but I'm often upset that I smoooooshed something by accident. Worst case scenario, I bake something too early and instead of fretting over perfections, I can move onto something else.
Discovered your channel through your recent post on /r/gunpla. As you've posted it on a sub meant for plastic model kits, I kinda expected you've used an actual Tie Fighter model kit as base. That shenanigan to make an almost perfectly round sphere out of clay is genius. I gotta binge the rest of your videos. I friggin love this kind of stuff. All looks so friggin cool.
Ya, that's why I wondered if it belonged, but I took a stab in the dark that those folk might appreciate it. And this clay hardens into a semi-plastic polymer soooo... kinda counts? Welcome aboard!
There's so many great options for kitbashing. I would love to try kitbashing, but I don't have a single kit, but less multiple with which to bash... But I gots lots of clay!
The pants make perfect sense sand is course and rough and it gets everywhere like robot joints. The arms of car weld robots also have cloth sleeves to keep them clean.
The tip direct at the beginning about how to make a perfect sphere absolutely blew my mind. Not gonna lie. Gonna adapt that trick, if I need it in the Future.
For finding the "centre points" on a sphere, if it's perfectly spherical, one could clamp it down in a vice very gently to get markings on the top and bottom. For the front, side and back markings, I would measure the diameter of the sphere and either craft of 3d print a tool with a pin where the bottom mark could spin on and a pin that is exactly half the diameter higher up and half the diameter to the side to scratch a line along the side of the sphere when the sphere is spun around in/on this tool. This line should now be a circle which is the same distance from both top and bottom mark. All thats left is measuring the circumference of this circle and dividing it by four. Maybe it works and could help you out?
He did! And I did! I still use almost exclusively manual focus, but the new camera highlights what's in focus so it's a lot easier for me to adjust quickly on the fly (thanks for noticing, I've been really happy with how visible my shots actually are lately!)

Just so you know, That's a 3D image, not a 2D one..... There is no 2D drawing is what I'm saying, the original artist sculpted that in 3D, you must have mistaken it for a normal 2D drawing somehow.
a cool explanation for the pants could be that it protects the metallic pieces in the legs that are more prone to rust from rain or any types of liquid that causes it to rust, just like in real life military vehicles that has soft flexible pieces as covers on some rotary form of joint that are exposed from potential oxidization.

Absolutely tiemendous !!! Before I started the video I was convinced you would use a tie fighter model kit for the sphere because it was so perfect! The glass as a shaping tool was worth watching for alone!
The obvious narrative on the pants is that they are the equivalent of the canvas boots that use to cover the moving parts of tank barrels from exposure to elements like sand. His arms and torso don’t need them because if they get into sand, the mech driver won’t have to worry about it much longer.
Great work! Also on the concept of pants/clothes for mecha, it can be a convenient way of covering up joints/inner mechanical function in a flexible way without needing full metal armor. Series like gundam thunderbolt and Patlabor have used this concept before
I hope you are getting these things scanned. It would take months to plot these out. You can simulate fatigue and wear but it isn't quite as reallyistic. Great job. Unbelievable.

Very, very cool. If something has hands, fingers, hiking boots, a sword, and a little dude on his head, I don’t see how someone could draw the line at wearing pants. It was all so well done. Also, the chapter labels were very funny.
I came back to this video again after watching your AT-ST Gundam video and it's safe to say that your personality is night and day. You really came into your goofy self when making these videos now lol
