Louis Comfort Tiffany designed a chapel interior for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago that was a sensation, propelling his reputation as an artist to even greater heights. The chapel was almost destroyed twice, rescued once by Tiffany himself and finally by Hugh and Jeannette McKean. This is its story and that of its restoration at the Morse Museum more than 100 years after its creation.

I live in Jersey City across the street from a church with a two-story tall Louis Comfort Tiffany window. I suspect it might have been created in his workshop only a few minutes from here. My 4th floor balcony faces it. When the church has nighttime services, the interior lights make the masterpiece shine.

I had went to Orlando for the funeral of my sister and while we were there a friend suggested I tour this museum. It was a hard time for me and I can't really explain what a profound effect it had on me. I was sitting in the chapel with tears running down my face - no ideal that I was even crying. I can't recommend this museum enough. Every bit of it beautiful and fantastic!

Thank you for your post. I feel like it was meant for me to read this today. My daughter died a little over 2 years ago and I am still in agony. I can feel your experience through the words you wrote and I thank you very much. I can’t explain it really, but it does help. Much love and comfort to you, who I’m sure still misses your sister a lot. 💕🐝

To think this survived the fire of the beautiful Tiffany Mansion, "Laurelton" in Laurel Hollow, Long Island. One of the most tragic losses of art was that estate. The whole place would've been one of Americas greatest works of art to see and enjoy. Very sad.

It would be a wonderful chapel in which to celebrate Holy Mass in the Traditional Latin Rite.
@gregb6469
@gregb6469 2 года назад
Since it is a Byzantine-style chapel, wouldn't a EOC mass in Greek be more appropriate? Wouldn't an authentic relic need to be placed in the altar first?

The Chapel was designed when the Latin Mass was de rigueur. The inscriptions are in Latin. Clearly it was designed as a Catholic chapel. The beauty of the Latin Mass would fit right in with the beauty of the chapel. Thank God it was saved. Now if we could just save the Latin Mass from the clutches of the present pope.

In Norfolk, VA at the Chrsler Museum has been the world's largest collection of Tyffany art glass personally c collected (initial collection) by Walter Chrysler himself; he lived just a rocks throw away until his death. I imagine the people at the Museum have sold off pieces since Walters death.

A little gem. It is ALMOST Catholic but the crucifix must have a corpus and other details are amiss. Strange to have a sort of non-denominational Christian artwork of such intensity. What is strange is that it is 'unpurposed' for Mass or actual Christian ceremonial use.
