Ellis Genge brings his mate Freddie Steward to meet Alex and Tinds this week. They celebrate Freddie’s sensational player of the match performances against both Australia and South Africa, and hear how his feet are firmly grounded living in student digs in Loughborough, listening to 80s disco.
They also get into Leicester Tigers’ phenomenal start to the season, the culture of the club and Ellis’ leadership.

I agree with Ellis - I don't see his personality has changed so much, and I don't think he was quite as wild as people maintained - he has never been a yellow card merchant, hasn't been in much trouble on the pitch at all. I think he is a young man who's confidence has grown as he develops, to the point now where people listen when he talks, and are in awe of his presence on the pitch. I hope the rumours of his departure from Welford Road are greatly exaggerated, the captain sets the tone for the team, and he is an awesome skipper imho.

Genge is so chill I don't know how he was portrayed in the media as a "bad boy" or a "loose cannon". Feel like the English media tends to brand any English international that hasn't come through the traditional private school route in that sort of light. Sincs, Marler, Hartley etc. Shame really when other nations seem to bring positivity out of exceptional players that have come through adversity, Kolisi for example.

@Limey Turtle Simply not true, 3 out of the 4 host of this podcast are privately educated 😂 Owen farrel, Itoje and Ford all went to the same private boarding school. Freddie went to Norwich (private school). Ben Youngs Greshams. Jamie George Haileybury. Slade Plymouth boarding school. Underhill Sir Thomas Grammar/ private school. Marcus Smith Brighton boarding. Soooo the majority of the England squad. Not current but Hask and Tinds are both from private school. It's alot more prevalent than you realise. Especially when you consider only 5% of the population are privately educated. Even the London 1 side I play for is basically an academy stepping stone that draws directly from one particular private school. Might be worth doing your own bit of research before making statements and jumping to conclusions. Don't get me wrong, doesn't diminish anyone's echievments, but to ignore the clear issues of inequality in the game is a disservice and holding English rugby back.

@Limey Turtle St George's is a church of England school with predominantly boarding education. It's pretty much a private school. I will amend private to "exclusive" It's not a coincidence 3 out of thr starting 15 all come from the same school. The majority of the others mentioned are straight up private schools. Even if they were predominantly grammar schools, grammar schools admit far more middle and upper class students than those from low income households or areas. Not to mention "voluntary contributions". Still presents the same issues. Even using your stat (not sure where you've got it from) 33% of the English team are from private education. I'm guessing that's not including those from upper-class backgrounds that went to "grammar/ exclusive schools". That's an issue. Youre pulling more than a 1/3 of your talent from a pool of less than 5% of the total population. It's obvious there is a lack of funding and engagement by the RFU at the state school/ Community level. When compared to sports like football or even the NFL the percentage of top talent in rugby consisting of upper class athletes is staggering. Back to the original point, the English media seem to portray those from less fortunate backgrounds as violent or thuggish when compared to their more fortunate peers.

There are plenty of private schools that are ex grammars though and keep the name and as much of the teaching ethos as they can while going private, often with a lot of bursaries/ scholarships etc.

@@Jeff-fx7bh facts rugby is not a sport for everyone as it claims
@gunner4life568
@gunner4life568 2 года назад
@Limey Turtle you are lying about football it is the most inclusive sport in the world just check the background of some players. I don't think you will ever find a rugby player who was in a refugee camp the same way you find in football. Even some boys come from poorer areas of the uk unlike in rugby hence why most people can't relate to it
