A fantastic performance of one of my favorite Time numbers, "Jerk Out", from "The Arsenio Hall Show" on August 24, 1990. This record is from their 1990 release, "Pandemonium", and I encourage you all to buy that and their other works. I do not own this video nor the rights to it. posslife.com
The Time:
Morris Day - Lead Vocals
Jesse Johnson - Lead Guitar & Backing Vocals
Terry Lewis - Bass Guitar & Backing Vocals
James "Jimmy Jam" Harris III - Keyboards & Backing Vocals
Monte Moir - Keyboards & Backing Vocals
Garry "Jellybean" Johnson - Drums
Jerome Benton - Mirror, Percussion, & Backing Vocals

2 years late & i just repeated what you said! Our era was the combo package; had to play instrument sing & dance to choreography. As much as I dug 70s Ohio Players, EWF...The Time was in a league by themselves.

What a comeback hit and album. Prince at his finest (he wrote/played the studio album; as he always did for the band to play live.) Sure wish they still made music like this instead of copy and pasting loops. I'm called an 'old head' for liking real playing more than loops/samples. Lol. Notice those six strings Jessie was strumming on. Kinda makes it.

Whatever happened to Black Entertainment? Black Bands used to be prevalent. I only mention this because of where things are today...smh.
@UNDFTDGordon
@UNDFTDGordon 5 лет назад
Kevin Lewis the hip-hop ideology destroyed the incentive to master instruments and music. Once you could make big money by sampling and not having any musical talent, you had little to no reason to acquire the skills that were once necessary to be in the industry. Jesse said that he is happy that he hit the scene at a time where you really had to know how to play in order to be in the industry. The Time was real.
@kevinlewis3972
@kevinlewis3972 5 лет назад
@@UNDFTDGordon Well I definitely appreciate your feedback but unfortunately you're point is misguided and uninformed. I just happen to be from the Hip Hop generation and I really frown on the ignorance of those who try to blame my culture for everything negative going on in the world it's either we're stealing everyone's music and dont have any talent of our own or we're inticing and influencing people to kill each other nevermind the fact people stole music(Led Zepplin stayed stealin people's ideas) WAY before Hip Hop was even conceived(not saying we steal music in hip hop) or that people kill each other all the time why blame rap? What people like you fail to realize(or at least you seem to based on your statements) is that Hip Hop was born out of deprivation, the school systems had a prevalent music program at one time in the past, when THAT dried up kids had no choice but to create with what they had laying around their environment that may have been some dusty Old records or some spray paint or whatever but the spirit behind what we did was always to create not destroy. Now in this modern day yes the music making process has been simplified BUT that does not mean talent is not required I challenge ANY studio session musician to put down their instruments and attempt to program a sampler and make it funky, it's not easy. You contridict yourself because sampling wasn't even done by hip hoppers first it was done by "musicians" great musicians like Stevie and Prince who also used beat machines and various other gear that basically replaced acoustic instruments but THAT'S ok right? Please understand I am NOT a fan of "today's" rap I think the majority of it is garbage, I am from The Golden Era of Hip Hop where TALENT was a necessity but at no point did sampling destroy anything because it's an art within itself, we used records as our "band" because we couldn't afford instruments but we didnt just use the records we CREATED a science and a technique the turntable became the instrument Sir so please educate yourself on the origins of the culture before you slam it and if you're already hip to what it's about and you just dont like it thats fine too but don't perpetuate myths and untruths because Hip Hop is a beautiful thing it just fell into the wrong hands and got perverted misguided and exploited... The way you SHOULD be looking at it is we bring alot of dead music back to life also, because we incorporate ANY genre of music we end up learning about artists and types of music we'd NEVER have heard of if we hadn't tried to sample them so basically we become more musically knowledgeable based on this for example, I never heard of Charlie Mingus until I tried to sample his stuff after which I grew an interest in the upright bass and wanted to learn more about it. So please dont blame Hip Hop for the decline in musicianship because there are EDM producers Pop music producers etc etc all of whom use computers to make their music with not one "real" instrument in sight are they also culpable in the destruction of traditional music making??? I think not.....Life is about phases dude, that acoustic funk will make it's way back around again, eventually.

I have always said that Cameo is my personal favorite band, Earth, Wind & Fire is perhaps the greatest band of all time and James Brown was the baddest dude that ever got into the music industry. HOWEVER, Morris Day and The Time (this original lineup) is, by far, the baddest cats as far as stage performance goes. They didn't use the pyrotechnics that EWF used, nor the gimmicks of Parliament. These dudes just came out and gave us a killer show with pure energy, attitude and music. Even in the movie Purple Rain, The Time killed it and Prince came in close 2nd. Just like the band Zone Seven out of Columbus, Ohio, Morris and these original cats were BADDDD!!!

That means I was listening 2 great music in the 80s music that mr. Prince brought to us! Hold him Jesus we miss him and thank him for bringing Los Angeles swag and music education to us listen to that music, yes we had Sly Stone James Brown and Bootsy Collins before Prince but without his seasoning of music(prince) we would not have no dance no Romance no life so thank you Prince thank you mr.
