I could have met George Lynch after a Lynch Mob show at a small club. He said he'd be at the merch table to sign stuff after the gig. But at one point he made a nasty comment to an audience member. I quickly bought my merch after the gig and left before George got to the table. Didn't want to engage him after his earlier display of attitude. Keep your heroes distant.

My wife is kind of in the biz and could have got me meet and greets with Joe or Steve Vai. Even though they're likely awesome IRL I declined each time. Paul and Billy are great though every time, though I'm sure everyone has bad days. I really don't like meeting celebs in general because they're people too and I reckon sometimes just want their space. I've seen Roberto Luongo a bunch because he lives in my town but I never bug him.

I've met Joe, Steve (Steve was my absolute god of life for decades), yngwie, Tosin, Zakk, Nuno, and Jason Richardson (my modern god)..... Every single one of them was beyond down to earth, hilarious, and a life changing experience. Meeting Vai at the time was the equivalent of a devoted church goer meeting God.... We talked about masturbation.... I referred to him as Jack Butler/Mr. Butler the entire time as well. I had Joe cracking up. Zakk was... Zakk... Had me crying laughing in seconds. Tosin left the table, 100s of people behind me waiting in line, just to go get me and only me a ton of free merch, cus I told him of the time I paid to meet AAL but the douchebags that run St. Andrews Hall in Detroit wouldn't let me in to the meet & greet for being FIVE minutes late. Nuno was super nice, kept laughing cus I kept acting like he was stoned (dude has eyes like Jim Bruer....).... Yngwie... Didn't even look up and wore sunglass. Indoors. At night. Jason and Luke Holland hung out and drank beers with me after the show...

I agree, but the thing is, Joe...is really old. He was like in his 30s, which at that time was a lot different than today it was borderline fossil in rock back then, and the way he was brought up with those harsh, perfectionist jazz teachers? I'm not surprised this may have been his honest, actual reaction.....back then. It only makes any sense if he literally didn't hear the problem (did they even use in ears back then?) and all he knew was you played over his ending. Still, it was a shitty way to respond, and it would be great if he responds. But he's like what, almost 70? He probably remembers but the only way out is an apology, something I hope he does.

Oh boy, I clearly remember the story. I read an interview of Satch to a french magazine at the time, in the early 90s, where he was mentioning this gig. He was complaining about the lack of maturity and respect of the young generation, with the example of the Bad4Good guitarist whom he invited onstage, who did not play a single note during the song, and ended up with a demonstrative shred. The way i understood it at the time, he interpretated it as some kind of stupid provocation. Thank you anyway for the story, brings back so many memories!!

The fact is, you all don’t realize that as a kid, Thomas was a little piece of sh!t!!! Completely out of control and disrespectful. People tried to help him and put him under their wing and he sh!t on these people! Steve vai let him barrow one of his Jem guitars and the kid cut it up with a saw before giving it back! Steve was pissed! Think about one of your friends doing that to a guitar you lent them! He would purposely do these things to people! Thomas burnt all his bridges. It’s the reason why everyone turned away from him and it’s why he never got anywhere. He had the guitar playing talent , but did not know how to treat the people who were helping him. He had everything he needed to become big, to rise above the best! But he burned his bridges way to soon. And his dad did nothing to steer him right, he only bathed in the attention his son was getting. So before you judge Joe Satriani, think about how it must have been playing a gig with a disrespectful kid you’ve put up with and already tried to help to no avail. Look at it from Joes view, the kid made not a sound during the song, then decides to turn up his overdrive pedal and plays his guitar at the end of the song when it’s closing when he wasn’t supposed to be playing and played something that wasn’t in the song or that didn’t go with the song only to show off to friends and family. He says he played over Joes ending because he wanted family and friends to hear him play because it had been a while. Like doing that really showed them anything that they haven’t already seen of him? Thomas has humbled himself now as an adult, because he knows that the way he use to be literally ruined him. No one wanted to collaborate with him anymore. I do enjoy his playing and his videos, but that’s only because he changed and bettered himself. He’s not the out of control, disrespectful kid that he use to be.

Satch never gave the impressions of having a temper. You said you toured with him and his band and he definetely knew you as being reliable. This can be really crushing. I've had a gig once and didn't sleep even a full hour the night before. We were all studying music that time and were evaluted by our tutors that night. There was this drunk guy in front of me and literally grabbed Joe and hugged him and Joe just kind of laughed but when I brought my guitar to him to sign, he was like this thing should be cleaner and it was one of his own signature JS guitars! I was kinda hurt but I shook Joe’s hand and said thank you and he still is my biggest influence so I think Joe is a perfectionist and wants things to turn out the way he wants. I remember seeing his guitar strap fail during a show once and he was clearly pissed because it made him mess up. I still love Joe and I still want to meet him again! Omg thats all on the tech man, It's his job to recognise these things on the spot but he probs slacked off a bit considering it was the last song. I remember being scolded for my tone (rightly so, it was baaaaaaad) during music class around the same age and it basically stopped me playing with gain for a decade, I felt so embarrassed in front of the whole class playing Dr Feelgood hahaha. Funnily enough it made me a much better guitarist learning to play well clean and I fell in love styles way out of my atmosphere to what I was influenced by at the time.

We need to hear Joe's side of this, to hear in his own words why he reacted that way. Stand by, although used eternally by everyone while not playing or taking a break ( which is perfectly fine) is not actually meant for that. Stand by is suppose to be only used before you actually power on your amp...depending on amp, you put it on stand by 20 seconds to 1 minute ( depends on amp) then power it up. If you are going to take a break for a while, just turn off your amp. It won't take that long to warm up the tubes if you are about to play.

I understand this from both perspectives and may have responded the same way they did. Thomas was young which should lend some grace. Based off an interpretation of Thomas’ story, if I were Joe, 2 things would upset me. My first reaction was Thomas had an inch that needed to be scratched, he felt a strong compulsion to play even though the circumstances didn't favor the situation. 2. Regardless of the reason why it happened, the situation wasn’t planned or scripted it was a reaction to circumstances. I probably would have responded the way Thomas did, I wouldn’t understand why until I was older.

I've met Satch several times over the years & he always came across as a totally nice genuine guy. However, there's often a huge difference between someone chilling away from their work, and someone concentrating intensely on their job. I know that Satch is a perfectionist, and with it being the last song of the set, he's no doubt used to having 'the final word'. He probably thought you were just being belligerent and trying to steal the show with the last laugh or something, but he could have at least listened to your side of the story instead of ignoring you. I'm sorry to hear Satch wasn't interested in your side of the story, or even accept your apology immediately afterwards. Such a shame, as most performing artists reportedly have Spinal Tap 'bizarre gardening accident' moments like this at some point during their career, but manage to build a bridge and get over it. Time is a great healer, and I hope that Satch has built enough life experience to not hold any grudges, and you will one day get to reunite with him on stage, or even share a studio recording or two.

This does sound really weird, but I'm guessing that Joe didn't realise what happened exactly and just thought Thomas was trying to upstage him or ruin the song right at the end (of course it's a pity that Thomas didn't notice the overdrive pedal a bit earlier). I'm also guessing that the reason Joe didn't even look at him and remained silent, was because he knew that Thomas was only 14, and he didn't trust himself to open his mouth and he didn't want to have a go at a kid. In other words, a misunderstanding about what actually happened. I've also heard that when Steve Vai is not happy about something, he goes quiet and looks like he is in deep thought, but you can tell he is not happy. He probably doesn't want to come across as an asshole, by blurting out what he is actually thinking. Edit: I hope that Marshal eventually went to Joe and explained that it was all their fault.

Was lucky to attend three of his concerts in Denmark between 1992-1995, the first indeed a blend of Surfing With The Alien and Flying in a Blue Dream albums, the next more like Time Machine (very "live") and the last just after the blues inspired "Joe Satriani". AND during the latter concert he experienced failing amp as well (however just for a short while during Circles I think). Man that was one messed up situation and you probably had mixed emotions of embarrassment and anger. Then you finally get 10 seconds of distortion unfortunately at a bad time but I hope it wasn't what it seemed to me to be his pride of either you getting the last lick in after the music stopped or him getting pissed because he is definitely a perfectionist, but either way he did not handle it like a true humble nature man would have because he didnt even tell you anything. I know theres not a great guitarist and artist out there that hasn't had at least one thing go wrong while they were playing on stage. But at the moment they dont remember their mess ups. I really like Joe and just listening to you talk about it the way you did tells me your a very likable person who has a good head on his shoulders. I sure hope joe finally realizes there was no reason to react that way toward you especially because of your age and the fact that he wouldnt have wanted to get treated the same way he did you.

It’s odd that you keep saying, “I don’t get it.” Yes you do. Anyone who has ever had a show or been onstage would understand what happened. You pointed out that Joe “was in a zone”. ie; Total focus and concentration at the end of HIS show. So he probably had no idea that you had amp problems. For one thing his monitor mix (probably too early for in-ear rigs) would have very little of your amp , if any. So what he hears is someone taking a mini solo after the last note of the show. That is highly obnoxious. Your age is the only possible excuse- but some 14 year olds would know not to do that. I happened to have just played a show where we invited 2 teenage guitar players to join us for a song (the drummer’s kids) one of them was fantastic in that he knew when to, and when not to play. His brother, conversely, stepped on the vocals about 4 times with fancy showy licks. I wanted to punch him in the face. But then I thought that it might be bad for the band’s image if I’m beating up children onstage. It probably took a few minutes for Joe to process what happened (after all, he’s a musician), maybe if you had said, “My parents and childhood friends were there and I didn’t want to let them down.... or whatever. It’s just doesn’t seem cool to use his name and throw this one sided story out here and feign being baffled. When you know, as does everyone, that he is the nicest guy ever. I could be wrong. He might be a total dick.

It probably came across to Satch like this little 14 year old wasn’t respecting the set list of his performance that night and wanted all the limelight and was wanking on the guitar saying “look at me”, “look what I can do”. I’m curious to know if they have seen each other since this incident or if Satch has given him the silent treatment ever since?

@@curiositydivine You can be in the zone as much as you want, but if you can perceive the post-end bit yet -- miraculously, conveniently -- not the *lack* of tone prior to that.. c'mon, let's be real. There's a difference between a low signal from the other guitarist in your in-ear monitors and NOTHING. Someone with that much experience should be able to tell something's wrong. Especially since, by his account, Thomas was giving clear "help me" nonverbal cues. We don't need to make a million excuses. Satriani's selective awareness aside, the real disgrace is the guitar tech(s) who sat through this, unbothered, for a whole song without moving their overpaid butts.

Loving all your stories McR, either fun or cringe like this one, I'm understanding your side 100% - Even if one pro is a perfectionist and looks down on mistakes or random events, a true perfectionist aims to rise above and hear/understand every side of the story. Hope this story isn't finished and will get resolved, but as I said, 100% on your side!👊

Look at it from Joes view, the kid made not a sound during the song, then decides to turn up his overdrive pedal and plays his guitar at the end of the song when it’s closing when he wasn’t supposed to be playing and played something that wasn’t in the song or that didn’t go with the song. He says he played over Joes ending because he wanted family and friends to hear him play. Like doing that really showed them anything that they haven’t already seen of him? Thomas has humbled himself now as an adult, because he knows that the way he use to be literally ruined him. I do enjoy his playing and his videos, but that’s only because he changed and bettered himself. He’s not the out of control, disrespectful kid that he use to be.

Years ago when Joe was at Guitar Center in Chicago my son and I were standing in line outside the store to meet him and get an autograph. The bald Englishman who tours with Joe came outside and said everyone outside of the building should go home the store is full. The people in the line were upset of course. The bald Englishman was a douchbag. We just ignored him and continued to stand in line. Then he said ok, but we won’t let you inside.

I have to think I'd know if I invited another guitarist to play, and his guitar sound wasnt coming out, I'd stop and take care of it, joke with the crowd that it was my fault to take heat off. Then kick back into it. Seems way overboard for someone to do that especially to a kid. Regardless of the day you had, you dont do that kind of shit to people when something was clearly wrong.

Those things you remember when you're 14, especially because you seem to care and have a good vibe and attitude, and you had a previous relationship. Joe was basically nice to everyone when we and several others met him and the band backstage at SDSU open air amphitheatre like 20 years ago. He was ready to not talk about guitar anymore and get out of there. My friend and I happened upon stu hamm chillin by himself before we found joe and Jonathan mover with a crowd around them in the parking lot getting ready to go.
