I feel sorry for the uber morlock, he really did try his best to help Alexander understand the time paradox he was trying to create and meant him no harm.
@JohnDoe-zl6qw
@JohnDoe-zl6qw Год назад
Oh, he meant him harm alright. He simply didn't act on it for the very same reason he gave Alexander: _"What if?"_ As the Morlocks came into being through the indirect efforts of Alexander (he helped a young Einstein with some equations, Einstein develops atomic theory, nuclear excavation explosives are used to hollow out the Moon for subterranean colonization, an accident happens with the explosives leading to the destruction of the Moon, subsequent Moon meteorite bombardment of Earth forces people into underground bomb shelters, 800,000 years later - _BOOM!_ - Morlocks) he couldn't risk killing Alexander just in case that would somehow screw up his own timeline: _"What if?"_ So he was happy to send him on his way to maintain the status quo; but out of enlightened self-interest and practicality, not magnanimity. Under any other circumstances, he and Alexander would be having dinner "together" if you catch my drift. The Uber Morlock is sinister and quietly menacing, but he's also intelligent enough to realize the situation for what it is.

@@JohnDoe-zl6qw I don't know if it was that far ahead. Imagine meeting your great great....great ancestor and you could have one chat before letting them go. He didn't try to intimidate him, nor acted with superiority or malice. He just gave Alexander his device back, and even his pocket watch. The guy doesn't seem that happy about the order of things, but what else can he do about it?
@JohnDoe-zl6qw

@@reinertgregal1130 _"I don't know if it was that far ahead."_ 1:55 _"Who are YOU, to question...eight-hundred...thousand...years......of Ee-vo-lution?!?!"_ The Uber Morlock knew he stood on a precipice that could see his entire world order destroyed if he made the slightest misstep where Alexander was concerned. If he wanted to survive, he _HAD_ to let Alexander go. The sooner the better lest some weird paradox or corruption of the space-time continuum occur. He needed Alexander alive but gone ASAP! This is a cannibal among cannibals, controlling a tribe of cannibals and treating it with nonchalance as if it's just natural. He in no way, shape, or form was doing Alexander any favors. He was motivated purely by enlightened self-interest. If he could have killed Alexander without consequence, he would have. But he couldn't risk the potential repercussions that may have rippled down the time line as a result. So he did the only logical thing: he let him go. He represents sinister but intelligent evil with his hands tied by circumstance.

0:48 I love how the Uber Morlock says 'Yes' here. He sounds so confused by Alexander's question, because the Eloi being food for the Morlocks is the cycle of life in this future and has been like that for so many years that it's completely natural, and Alexander criticising it like that is something the Uber Morlock hasn't heard before. Great acting by Jeremy Irons.

Alexander doesn't really make much of an argument here, and the Morlock kind of makes sense when he says this is just how Nature and Evolution have forced them to be. +ShadowSonic2 He should have made the argument that what they were doing was barbaric (as well as cannibalism), and what they should be doing now is breeding among the Eloi, introducing their pigments into their gene pool. I t would take thousands of years, just like it did for them to breed into castes, but with selective breeding, I think they could breed back in skin pigmentation eventually, and be able to live on the surface without getting skin cancer. They would still have to continue on as usual (though I am surprised that not a single species suitable for food survived, and yet the humans on the surface did), but at least they'd be doing something!
@ShadowSonic2
@ShadowSonic2 8 лет назад

Here is the quiet genius of this scene. You go into it identifying strongly with the views of the protagonist. Rightly so. On the surface, what is going on here appears to be controlled by a truly evil person. But let me ask you this: If he is so evil, why did he admire the glowing fish instead of killing it?
@xyrus345
@xyrus345 3 года назад
Moral relativism. Good and evil have always been in the eye of the beholder. One person's genocidal maniac is another's patriotic hero. It's why humanity will eventually destroy itself, either by accident or on purpose. This leads to my favored solution to the Fermi Paradox. The reason why we don't see intelligent life roaming around our galaxy is because for every technological advance of said civilization there is an ever increasing risk of disaster. We're basically still in our diapers as far as technological advancement goes and we've already had some damn close calls, and that was before climate destabilization started throwing matches at the powder keg known as human civilization.
