On November 23, 1986, former MVP kicker Mark Moseley was out of a job and was working as an analyst on The NFL Today with CBS. On November 30, 1986, Moseley hit the game-winning field goal for the Cleveland Browns in overtime. This is the story of how Mark Moseley went from zero to hero in the span of a week.

This reminds me of something that happened in Formula 1 this weekend. One of the drivers got food poisoning, and couldn't race. His team's backup driver, Nico Hülkenberg, was doing analysis for German TV. He started Saturday morning thinking he was just going to talk about the race, but he got the call, drove from the studio to the track, did qualifying, and then finished eighth in the race.

Interestingly, Matt Bahr, the Browns kicker who tore his knee up, kept playing. He recovered, and kicked for 9 more seasons. He retired with three Super Bowl rings (Steelers, 49ers, and Giants)

Mark Moseley: Wins Washington a Super Bowl while winning the MVP. Wins the Browns this game and becomes a reliable kicker for them for the rest of the season. And after he retires, takes "Five Guys Burgers and Fries" national. The man just wins!

Not only did Mosely go to the AFC Championship game, his former team also went to the NFC Title game. Both lost in their respective games but he was close to meeting the Redskins in the Super Bowl.

I was just getting ready to point this out. He would’ve been a focal point during the build up of a Skins/Browns Super Bowl.

In the AFC Championship game, Moseley was the kicker who pinned the Broncos back inside their own 2 yard line. Unfortunately that just made "The Drive" that much more epic.

Moseley lost his holder abruptly and that is why he began the downward slide. Who was his holder? you might ask, the guy who had his leg snapped like a twig by LT. Joe Theisman

This is the fourth video you’ve done in which Matt Bahr played a key role. You almost have enough for a Matt Bahr playlist.

My favorite all-time kicker will likely always be Morten Andersen, but Mark Moseley was a fascinating football player. He was a part of so much great history. He set a new standard for his position, too, that might never ever be duplicated. The only other time I can think of where a ST player maybe should’ve won MVP was Devin Hester of the Chicago Bears in 2006.

I remember the Bahr injury very well. He got hurt making a leg-whip tackle on Pittsburgh return man Lupe Sanchez. If Bahr didn't make the tackle Sanchez probably would've gone 98 yards for the game-winning TD. Cleveland's emergency kicker in that game was backup TE Harry Holt, who had apparently done some kicking in the CFL. In addition to being an outstanding kicker Bahr was a tough guy; he'd stick his nose in there and make tackles on kickoffs fairly regularly. Great job on these videos, BTW, especially the footage.
@gluserty

That's true about Matt Bahr & tackling; I thought his Super Bowl 25 tackle of Don Smith (who had a head of stream and a seam to run through) was exceptional. He sat Smith right down with a form tackle.

Ironically, the 1986 Browns benefited from an opposing specialist getting injured. In their game at Minnesota, Vikings punter Greg Coleman tore a muscle in warmups, forcing Jerry Burns to turn to Wade Wilson. Wilson's first kick went 38 yards, but his second was blocked. Burns then turned to kicker Chuck Nelson, who shanked all three of his punts, setting up 17 points in Cleveland's 23-20 win.

Yeah Bahr was fearless covering kickoffs. Pat McAfee also comes to mind covering punts.

Darren Bennett was the same way for the Chargers back in the '80s. He was a rugby guy, and after he'd punt the ball he'd go looking for someone to hit. He wasn't afraid of contact, at all.

He was the last regular straight-ahead kicker. I think Steve Cox was the absolute last -- he was a punter who was called on to try long FGs and who hit a 60-yarder.

Biggest problem with Franco: he NEVER kicked off the ground prior to his tryout with Cleveland. The NCAA did not ban use of the kicking tee until 1989, and the USFL allowed the tee for placekicks.

With Mark Moseley's retirement came the end of an era: the straight-on kicker. The revolution started in 1964 by Pete Gogolak was complete. By the mid-80s, the European soccer-style kickers; Toni Fritsch, John Smith, Raul Allegre and others; were being replaced by American soccer-style kickers, like the Bahr brothers, Scott Norwood, Nick Lowrey and others.
@Lawomenshoops

Jan Stensrud came into the AFL with the Chiefs, within a year or two after Gogolak. He was from Norway and was a soccer style kicker! He maybe the first, kicker-only, to be elected to the HOF!
